Rod Dreher: Ron Paul, if only we listened
The Dallas Morning News ^ | 2008-11-25 | Rod Dreher

I didn't vote for Ron Paul in the Republican primary (I was a Mike Huckabee man), nor did I write him in on Election Day (I penciled in farmer-poet Wendell Berry). But no Texan this year did more good for conservatism and his country than the congressman from the coast.

Lord knows there was no Republican in the 2008 campaign who talked straighter.

Dr. Paul – he's a physician – never had a chance, of course. He is too peculiar in his opinions and doesn't know how to spin like a TV slick. What he had was ideas, integrity and authenticity. On the most critical challenges facing America, Dr. Paul was more right than the well-funded GOP regulars who bigfooted the campaign trail.

So what did the Republican Party do with Ron Paul and his followers? They kicked him (and them) out of the tent, and branded him with a "nutjob" label).

Yeah, I'm not very informed when it comes to current events. Plus I just make stuff up.

Funny though, because it never occurred to me to spread such lies about Palin or W or even you or me. Wonder why that is? My depravity must be absolutely incoherent.

And I prefer classical liberalism to conservatism, myself. What’s the difference? Paleoconservatism has way too much populism for me. For instance, I don’t think we should legislate religious values. What do I mean my that? Simple, if it doesn’t affect your life, rights or property, you ought to have a limited interest in it. Yeah, there are some basic societal issues (for instance gay marriage [yech] we have to agree on. BUT, we need to avoid tyranny of all types - majoritarian, as well as tyranny of a minority. The way that works out in practice? Don’t like abortion? Don’t have one. Others may think differently. They are wrong by my lights, but they get to be wrong because they don’t affect my life, rights or property. YMMV.

I was snippy in my post #142 to you and I apologize. No excuse, I'm (as always) sober and (currently) stress free. Sometimes I'm just a bad guy and sometimes it shows.

You sure don't need any snippiness from the likes of me. It won't happen again.

You are absolutely correct. But you knew that, didn’t you? :^)

You are undoubtedly correct. You ARE depraved... and not very clever at the stuff you make up. Practice more. Use Obambi as your subject.

Afganistan did not stand alone. When we drove the scum out they went to Iraq for medical treatment and revival. The Northern part of the nation had its very own al Queda offshoot. If Paul does not understand this simple fact he is indeed unjustifiably ignorant.

There is no Constitutional format for a declaration of war. Congressional legislation approved the war. This is a deceptive objection. And I have heard him express other reservations most based upon an isolationist view of the world. Not a realistic one.

Some of us have listened to the man for years and know exactly where he stands on foreign policy. He stands with the RATs and adopts their Ostrich policy of sticking our heads in the sand.

Gee another RAT talking point used to support Paul. Some of us would be happy to be on the front line but are past the expiration date. So we support our sons in the military rather than RAT line spouters.

RR did not govern like a Libertarian either in California or in Washington so don’t pretend he did.

I really don't care if Paul wrote it, read it or didn't. A critical comment about the homosexual agenda or the welfare mentality of many inner city blacks is well deserved, even if it was politicaly incorrect.

Paul's not a racist, anymore then the people who have criticized Obama, and get unjustly called racists. The comments in the letter didn't bother me in the slightest.

There are plenty of out there who want to scream “bigot”, at the drop of a hat, and it appears you are one of them.

The majority has consistently wanted something for nothing and I see little chance of that changing given the methods used to achieve political power.

It is almost impossible for the Right to control government when its rhetoric is universally anti-government. It has been utterly discredited by the Treason media and cannot elect statewide officials outside of a few states.

In addition, conceding the cities to the democrats makes it extremely difficult to win states especially as the nation becomes more urbanized as a whole.

The same format as was used to enter WWII would suffice, something that would clearly STATE that a state of war existed between the United States and ____ (fill in the blank), which would also clearly and specifically say that the Congress, in passing the declaration of war, pledged the complete support of Congress and the Nation until victory was won. How hard would that be? Then it would all be right out in front with no room for dispute (by the Rats) or misconstruction by anyone else.

(May I respectfully suggest you add “rude” to your screen name?) (Also, “less than informed” might be indicated.)

So if you never taught you can’t talk about education?

If you never studied economics you can’t discuss the economy?

If you never wrote a novel you cannot discuss “Great Expectations”.

There was no howling mob calling for war. Rather there were endless discussions, meetings with the UN, inspections and actions for ten years. Meanwhile Saddam is thumbing his nose at everyone, training terrorists at Salman Pak, funding al Queda terrorista in the Philippines and Northern Iraq and quite likely against the US in at least TWO incidents on our soil. Iraqi connections appear in any serious examination of Oklahoma City. The chief instigator of the first World Trade Center attack immediately fled to Baghdad.

The great majority of veterans around here in fact DID support the invasion of Iraq.

The Founders left the issue specifically to Congress because they feared exactly what Truman gave us: the imperial presidency. They DIDN’T want the executive running around declaring war or even using troops for 60 days before seeking a declaration from Congress. The issue is for Congress and Congress alone to decide. They cannot constitutionally abdicate their authority and pass it to the presidency. Something called checks and balances, maybe you’ve heard of it.

“To declare war...” is pretty self explanatory.

There is much more to being a conservative than just being pro-life .. that’s just one element.

You call for war, you should be willing to go YOURSELF. Not send a surrogate.
