I didn't vote for Ron Paul in the Republican primary (I was a Mike Huckabee man), nor did I write him in on Election Day (I penciled in farmer-poet Wendell Berry). But no Texan this year did more good for conservatism and his country than the congressman from the coast.
Lord knows there was no Republican in the 2008 campaign who talked straighter.
Dr. Paul he's a physician never had a chance, of course. He is too peculiar in his opinions and doesn't know how to spin like a TV slick. What he had was ideas, integrity and authenticity. On the most critical challenges facing America, Dr. Paul was more right than the well-funded GOP regulars who bigfooted the campaign trail.

The same GOP establishment that mocked and reviled Dr. Paul now lies shattered. Who believes in this Republican Party anymore? The party destroyed itself with its own unprincipled recklessness, both in foreign and fiscal policy. And it has ruined its reputation among the young the most ardent of Dr. Paul's supporters, incidentally who are far more likely to identify with the Democrats.
Out of this destruction, some creative young conservatives may rise up and decide to take back the Republican Party. Perhaps they'll run against the overweening power of the federal government and in favor of decentralizing power (but unlike today's Republicans, they'll actually mean it). Maybe they'll fight for an America that lives responsibly, within its natural limits both overseas and at home. And maybe, just maybe, they might make the Republican Party worth following again.
BUMP!
Ron Paul ping.
ping
The problem with Ron Paul was his foreign policy.
Right. 30 years of saying No! does not a great leader make.
The 2008 “election” fix was “in” 24 months ago. Ask anyone working in the MSM. They’ll tell you. It was Barack Hussein Obama all the way. Everything else was for entertainment purposes only.

***Dr. Paul has long argued that an economy built on easy credit, insatiable consumption and deficit spending is a time bomb. He backs a national economic model based on savings, investment and production.
An economy that depends so heavily on government intervention to keep it afloat is one that creates of necessity an ever more powerful state.***
True words all.
Rod Dreher was a fairly weak member of the NRO team years ago and he's gone downhill steadily ever since. He's like a male Peggy Noonan. As time goes on one wonders more and more whether they ever really were conservative or interesting.
I agree. I could not support an anti-war candidate while our troops were in harm's way. That said, I have long admired Dr. Paul and respected the way he stood true to conservative principles.
Despite his reasonable ideas, Dr. Paul seemed to fare poorly in the primary debates. Even McPain seemed to dominate him in the exchange of ideas even though we knew McPain stood for nothing but pending electoral defeat.
Who's this "we" kemosabe? You "penciled in farmer-poet Wendell Berry." That really helped!
I didn't vote for Ron Paul, either, but at least I'm not lecturing other people about it.
Well .. I hate to burst your bubble .. but Ron Paul IS NOT A CONSERVATIVE - HE’S A LIBERTARIAN.
They may have a few things they agree on - BUT CONSERVATIVE IS CONSERVATIVE - not partially Libertarian.
Ron Paul was more closely aligned with the Clinton’s foreign policy - visit all the tyrants - get drunk with them - have them sign secret deals with the U.S. (without congressional approval) and then - hear no evil, see no evil, and do nothing when attacked .. because war is never allowed. I’ve heard Ron Paul espouse that exact policy, saying, “War is never the answer”. Reality says - WAR IS SOMETIMES THE ONLY ANSWER - not the choice you want to make, but the choice YOU HAVE TO MAKE - TO SAVE CIVILIZATION.
I can’t fathom a more dangerous OR STUPID foreign policy THAN TO DO NOTHING - IT BOUGHT US 9/11. If we aren’t able as a nation to operate pre-emptively on offense - and wait only to be attacked - and then still do nothing .. there will only be more and more 9/11’s.
Exactly. And although Mike Huckabee is a social conservative, he is a fiscal big-government liberal. Plus, he’s anti-Mormon, which hurts the conservative movement, as a lot of conservative support comes from Mormons, who are social conservatives, but also big on self-reliance, a core American value.
Paul was in favor of bombing Kosovo?
Ideas, integrity and authenticity. It will be a long time before they are in high demand in America again. Socialism is here and that is the answer to everyones troubles.
Ron Paul declared the Kosovo war illegal. On the other hand, McCain voted to bomb Serbia.
Serbia/Kosovo ping!
>Right. 30 years of saying No! does not a great leader make.
Though Congress needs some of that for the “Can I have a bailout?” questions...
A giant among politicians, Ron Paul is.
Exactly. It is painful to think how much better off we would be if there had been no new federal initiatives in the last thirty years, and the trillions in capital flushed down the drain had been invested productively.
The most dangerous foreign (or economic) policy is that of doing something for the sake of doing something.
If we arent able as a nation to operate pre-emptively on offense - and wait only to be attacked - and then still do nothing .. there will only be more and more 9/11s.
So basically, you're advocating starting wars in order to defend the U.S. from war?
Smooth. Very smooth.
Rudy foreign policy + Paul domestic = ideal candidate.
His problem was that he was an anti-war isolationist... no thanks.
LLS
I think the only guy comparable to Ron Paul was Fred, Duncan Hunter or Tancredo. If Fred had been a few years younger and got started sooner - he would have been a great choice and a great President.
An isolationist, by definition, is someone who is anti-war, but also a protectionist and in favor of closed borders to immigrants. So I'm not sure how exactly Ron Paul can, in good honesty, be called an "isolationist" when he is really just a non-interventionist.
And a racist whackjob.
Oh, and by the way, McCain was a ready and willing supporter of the KLA, a terrorist group affiliated with Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda, the criminals who attacked the U.S. on September 11, 2001.
How inconvenient.
. . . . .
Compounded with his well-documented and public support for La Raza and the illegal alien invasion, there is no way that any Freeper who is sound of mind can, without resorting to extensive hypocrisy, say that McCain is strong on national defense.
that’s BS
Sorry .. I’m not a McCain supporter .. you’re wasting your breath on me.
Well .. if you’re so ignorant or just plain stupid that you can’t understand what I said .........
I’m in the same boat.
The only real youth and vigor that Republicans had captured, had been through Ron Paul's leadership and his popularity with college age voters (I've got two in my family).
So what did the Republican Party do with Ron Paul and his followers? They kicked him (and them) out of the tent, and branded him with a "nutjob" label).
Did anyone think about the fact that we were throwing out the most Internet savvy, the best grassroots organizing, the best fund-raising, the youngest and most dynamic people in this whole election cycle?
I'm sure that a lot of them voted for the 0.
Believe what you want....

Check this out. Gerald Celente predicting a third party by 2012.
A quality in desperately short supply. He takes the Constitution of the United States of America seriously, in a day when most "constitutional scholars" seek loopholes and further means to circumvent it.
And that his message was being delivered by... Ron Paul.
What would Paul do with that power?
We would become a banana Republic....ooops!
I almost forgot!....Obama is also bringing a banana Republic.
Well coulda....shoulda......Banana Republics ...are all the same.
Thanks for crashing the Republican convention Ron. Great way to get public support.
McC was also the stooge candidate of The Pukeneos after Giuliani
bombed.....both candidacies were tightly controlled by The Puke puppeteers.

"Wooty and Chonny join me to tank Kvistol and da pukeneos
for all dey haf done for de Republican Potty."
"Da pukes financed and flacked meeny losing Republican Potty campaigns.
Den dey transferred trillions of US dollars into da Muddleast."
" Dem pukes gave Ameereeka amnesty and saddled us with meellions of
drug runners and criminals undermining US nashional seecurity........and conniving
Turd World lowlifes wit multiple identities who haf destroyed our economee."
"The pukes screw up everyteeng dey touches."
" RINO losers Wooty and Chonny choin me to say 'tanks, pukes.' "
Yep, some people will believe BS about Paul being a racist no matter how stupid such a belief is or any contradictory evidence.
