My response was not in regard to abuse by the school systems, but rather abuse by those receiving benefits of any type.

As to parental income self-reporting without documentation, it’s obvious it happens, however, that was not my experience.

Basically, the entire point of my post is that the peoplefor whom these damned programs were started for a temporary bit of assistance are the ones getting the cavity probes for proof of need. Similar to the gun laws, only the law-abiding are effected.

I remember a time when college tuition was free for residents at the City or State University system, regardless of income. That ended a few years before I graduated HS. Between scholarships and the state Tuition Assistance Program, my college tuition for the first 2 years I attended was less than just the tuition for my senior year in HS.

Right now both mom and dad are apologizing to our girl because we are both having difficulty finding real jobs. She’s only 10, but at times has a better attitude than either mom or dad.

School administrations work hard to get students signed up.

The more on the begging for food list, the more money the school receives.

These kind of welfare programs enourage people to be non-productive and look to others (the government) for handouts. End these programs and the parents will go to work to pay for their rugrats lunches, or they’ll go hungry or starve. Either way, they will no longer be a burden on the rest of society

Get rid of the illegals and maybe some of the parents would be able to get jobs.

Seriously, I understand the anger about abuses of the system, but guess what? Even conservatives have a need for a bit of help every once in a while without sanctimonious crapola being thrown their way.

And you can be guaranteed the children of these fine specimens clog the classrooms of special education teachers around the country. Instead of helping their children learn to read (for example buying the kids books instead of video games)they waste their money (or should I say our money since most of it is mooched from the government aka taxpayers) exactly as you stated.

I can’t believe any of those standing in line asking for government handouts are True Conservatives. They may say they’re conservatives, but they aren’t acting like it.

That's amazing!

I'm awfully sorry to hear that and I really hope you both find something soon! Your daughter sounds like an absolute sweetie and a *big hug* to all of you!

And about 90% of them are just freeloading families eating at the taxpayer-funded trough.

Then I'm sure you wouldn't mind sending me 50 bucks or so in order for me to feed my 10 yo something different than PB&J everyday. Garden season is over in these parts and what I did put up is only going to go so far.

Yes, I'm being sarcastic, but my husband and I are doing everything we can to keep a roof over our heads, and keep our child warm and well fed. Oh, and we're still paying taxes. Taxes, I might remind you that are going to fund the same assistance I am temporarily using.

I will gladly give up the assistance, I'm not thrilled about getting it in the first place, if I can come up with a legal means of covering all of my obligations.

Check into the USAC School Technology program.

The more kids these schools can jam onto the free lunch program, the more money they get for 'technology'.

I can believe it.

I knew a working couple w/three kids and multiple medical problems who were on assistance. The file folders she had to keep with all the paperwork was amazing. If they made a few dollars over the *level* in a given month and had used Medical Assistance, they were charged back that exact portion of the MA. There was a choice of food stamps or Earned Income Tax Credit. One January when they needed fuel assistance because their chimney dampers failed, it took weeks to jump through the hoops and then, it was a limited amount because the money is a pool divided among whomever applies. IIRC, they got a half tank of propane.

It isn’t a gravy train from what I saw.

Thank you for your consideration........but it still doesn’t negate the fact you don’t consider me a real conservative, does it?

Thank you for a voice of reason here.

I have long and loudly railed against those that abuse the sytem, and still do, and against the system that allows the abuse to continue.

The fact of the matter is those that are not abusing the system are the ones being abused BY the system.

Yes, we are currently receiving foodstamps and our daughter is getting free lunch at school, but I still clip coupons and buy on sale, just as I have always done. I also do a lot of canning and freezing and don’t rely on convenience foods, just as I have always done.

I work at our family business, we have been self-employed for 4 generations now.

I have paid into unemployment now since I was 16, so for nearly 30 years I have paid, but I can never get a check from them because I am a part owner.

If things go bad for us then talk to be about fair...
