Jeb Bush to GOP: Don't Become 'Democrat-Lite'

By: David A. Patten
Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush tells Newsmax that the GOP must broaden its appeal to avoid becoming the old white-guy party, and recommends that Republicans create a shadow government to engage Democrats on important issues as the incoming Obama administration seeks to enact its agenda.
In a wide-ranging interview with Newsmax, the popular former governor and younger brother of President George W. Bush said the 2008 election was neither transformational nor a landslide. For example, he noted that Barack Obama's significant fundraising advantage over John McCain played a key role in Democratic success this year.
Bush urged Republicans not to abandon their core conservative principles in favor of a "Democratic-lite" agenda. Still, he says the GOP does need to do some real soul-searching.

YES-YES-YES. WE elected the wrong Bush!
Yikes! Can’t wait to see this little thread wind up.
Why didn't he say that to his brother, Jorge?
Wouldn't that be a move to the right?
No more Bushes, please...
I always thought Jeb would have been better. I think we have been burned twice. GW was good except on amnesty and for dozing off over the past 2 years. I hope this is not a play for Jeb to run in 2012. I will not take a chance the third time. I guess a monarchy is better than the coming marxist cadre.
Oops - too late!
Shame too because we'll never elect another one.
Ummm - that advice would have been more helpful if given to and heeded by your father and your brother.
I think there is more to this article than meets the eye. I don’t believe that Jeb Bush threw his brother under the bus, red meat for the BDS crowd, including many here with questionable motives.
Gee Jeb, thanks for telling us now. Doncha think you could have given your Bro this talk back in 2000? Heck of a job he did in pissing on conservatisim just before he took a huge dump on it only to stomp up and down on it.
No BUSH should ever run for office again. It’s enough to make me never want to see Bush again!!!
This from ain't-no-way-you're-gonna-drill-off-the-coast-of-florida-bush???
OPEN LETTER TO JEB BUSH:
OK that’s a good quote Governor. A good thought. Good advice.
But do you have ANY idea how outraged the people who agree with what you just said are, about the jailing of those two Border Agents?...
Here’s a simple hint. Governor Bush, if you would like to run for the office of President, and win, you should start with one very simple step:
Publicly call for your Brother to PARDON, those two Border Agents.
Don’t pull him aside. Don’t call him.
Call a press conference, and demand it.
Then, call him, and make it happen.
If you do that, you’ll get my vote. For Sarah’s running mate... ;)
Seriously Governor. Your brother has *badly* mishandled the border and especially those two agents.
Do something about it.
Then talk about that idea of “democrat-lite”.
You’ll have more street cred.
I have Bush fatigue, thanks for the advice Jeb. Now go hunker down in Kennebunkport with the rest of the tribe. Later you can assume “elder statesman” status with the GOP
I guess we can just forget about that content of character stuff .
The real tragedy of W is not only did his failures cause the dims to retake the Congress, it also prevented his far superior brother from being POTUS.
I agree. The pot speaketh. Hopefully Oblahblah will hose it up bad enough , and quick enough for a reactionary , Republican , landslide at midterms.
I like Jeb a lot.
We may be experiencing a bit of Bush Overload right now, but I wouldn’t count anyone out right now, not even some of our damaged politicians, or politicians with over-used last-names, or pols with less experience than normal. The field is wide open right now, because we are in a fight with our backs to the wall, everything we believe in is on the line and will be for the next four years, or if we lose perhaps for decades to come.
Our fighters will reveal themselves over the coming seasons, and so will our leaders. They won’t be the ones jockeying for position, they will be the ones getting in the faces of our opponents, the ones who can articulate what it is we believe in, who won’t be looking to split the difference when splitting the difference means losing all we hold dear.
Most people have better things to do than to go out and do battle every day with scumbag journalists and scumbag politicians. But some people were born to it, usually flawed in some way but born to do battle. These are the people we’re looking for.
Thanks for the advice, Jeb, but that’s as far as you go. If you really care about the Republican Party, don’t get in the way of Jindal, Palin, and others. Your place is on the sidelines from now on.
Strange to think how Terri Schiavo will cause him to never be politically viable.
Jeb has a huge pair of cahones for stating these things now. Forgive me if I somewhat doubt his sincerity.
Maybe he should have told his brother this instead.
Yeah, like embrace amnesty, which will then help us win votes and lose the country.
You Ramos and Campean people are an embarassment, and are wedge-drivers. I suspect most of you are Bush-haters who solely use this issue to foster more BDS. They lied about what happened. How dare you slam President Bush for not pardoning LIARS? I hope he does NOT pardon them, they don’t deserve it.
It means recruiting candidates that look like the population were trying to attract to our cause.
More Affirmative Action candidates like Obama, is that what you want?
You aren't the only one. But, I also have Clinton, Kennedy, etc. fatigue too. For some reason these people think their political offices belong 'in the family' for years and years and years. How about some new blood?!
Jeb might have been better than George, who knows?
In any case, there’s no chance that he could get elected now, so the question is purely theoretical.
Blah blah blah.
I was probably supporting Bush before, and stronger, than you apologists.
But he just plain lost my confidence, and I still cannot even comprehend, by turning his back on those two Agents.
When that happened, I remember when GWB was starting to discuss the idea of running ... back in 2000. Remember then? Remember how he initially paused, and seemed to have second thoughts? Remember there were oblique references to his youth?
Where did our president, spend his wild youth?
(Some in Mexico, was it?)
I really sometimes wonder, whether Bush is the one making our policy decisions re: Mexico.
That’s a pretty major lack of trust, to find oneself thinking about a former hero. I keep railing about the issue, because I want to be shown I’m wrong.
So spare me your lectures.
I have beltway fatigue and CFR fatigue - let's get some blood from the outside. Bad company corrupts good morals!
Where can I find a break down of which presidential candidate won which congressional district in each state
BFS - Bush Fatigue Syndrome, YOU BET. Despite the smaller and smaller numbers of the Bush-bots mouthing off.
RIGHT ON BROTHER! ..........what a breath of fresh true air!
I'm so sick and tired of those who don't even understand the Ramos/Campean Case. They are dirty.
Any folks in doubt?? Read about the Case HERE
God Bless the great President G.W. Bush.
And let's drop the hogwash about some kind of Ramos/Campean "pardon". Please.
Operation Shred Bush is almost complete. Tear the man down, disregard all of the challenges he’s faced (for all of his eight years), and crap on his accomplishments like taking on the WOT despite being hamstrung, vilified, and strung out by the Rats.
All of you who slam President Bush couldn’t hold a candle to him in your wildest dreams. He doesn’t sit around a keyboard and offer cheap and easy criticisms.
I love Bush, but on this one he was wrong.
They violated policy, and ought to have been fired. They should not be doing hard time.
They aren’t the only ones being prosecuted; several others are, for even less cause.
Sutton is an embarrassment. He was protecting the drug dealer who continued to run drugs, up until he was embarrassed into action by media attention. And then, when he went after the drug dealer, he violated his own word to the guy. He is a disgrace.
You are too new here for me to care about your opinion. Sorry, just being honest.
He should have told his brother that in 2000.
lol. don’t let appearances deceive you
Look, once law enforcement officers lie, they need to go down. I am one myself. Should the day ever arrive that I misplace the public’s trust and lie my ass off, I should be hammered to all hell and I would not expect to have misguided supporters.
If you lie about an iffy shoot, you need to be fired.
You don’t need to be doing hard time.
Dog-eared for Monday reading.
Yeah, you need to suffer the appropriate penalties and not have people crying out for pardons. Especially people with hidden agendas.
Abuse under color of authority is a felony. Felony means prison, not jail. Prison means hard time.
I don't. I wasn't born yesterday, either.
I’m guessing Jeb’s responding to the pundits and elites in the GOP who are trying to convince Republicans that it was the conservative Sarah Palin who ruined John McCain’s chances to become President. Those ‘fiscal conservatives’ believe that if they could just unload all those silly ‘social (religious) conservatives, that they’d draw all those moderate and independent voters everyone was talking about during the campaign.
Tell your brother and Dad!
The Bush family destroyed Reaganism.
Quit now Jeb and join the democraps, that would go a long way towards achieving the anti democrap lite catagory.
