This is an incident report and there is no information indicating that it is terrorism related. Additional details will be provided as they become available.
Guests were evacuated Sunday night when a smoke bomb went off on the fourth floor of the Hilton Garden Inn, 1940 W. Pinnacle Peak Road in northwest Phoenix.

This could have been me as a kid. I was a lab assistant for a chemistry class and had access to all the chemicals. Of course, I liked to experiment.....

Fourth floor room in an upscale business hotel, is an odd place to be doing chemistry experiments.
Could be test...Maybe...or just Y2Kapocalypticnukewinter people wanting to stay someplace with hot water and room service.
The article said guns and bullets were also found in the room.. seems officials are quick to say that it was not terror related...this always is the case..
I once caused my High School to be evacuated. VERY hot sulfur in the heating/ventilation system causes unpleasant fumes.
I was also once responsible for the evacuation of an entire dormitory at Virginia Tech. The lighting/detonation of a single string of 1000 lady-finger fire crackers in a dorm room makes an ENORMOUS amount of smoke... certainly MORE than enough to set off smoke detectors.
This was in the days before “blind panic” became the emotion of the day, though.
Well, “they” would find “guns and bullets” in ANY hotel/motel room I am staying in, IF they searched it.
That DOESN’T make me a terrorist.
PS - I’m not so much in to smoke bombs now; but back in the day...

I hear you!Not enough info in the article to draw any conclusions. People have a legitimate right to have guns and ammo in their hotel rooms. But we also know that our officials will say just about anything to keep the peace and faith in our system.
LOL...I set off the fire sprinklers, flooded the whole bottom floor ;^)
This hotel is not far from where those Muslims were caught a week or two ago firing guns.

Even though my “exlosion-making” is less frequent than it used to be, I still succumb to the “old ways” now and again.
On Thanksgiving day I amazed and impressed my 7-year old son when, in less than five minutes, I constructed a fully operational “cannon” using only a few empty green bean cans, a can opener and some duct tape. With a little naptha-based lighter fluid and one of his foam rubber balls, we were able to make quite a racket.
Repeated loud “booms” echoing through the trees next to our house provided fine entertainment as we waited for the turkey to finish cooking.
You are bring tears to my eyes! My brother and I used to make these cannons and shoot tennis balls at each other. Smashing up model cars was pretty fun too!

Prior to 9/11 there was a very active violent criminal element here.....They didn’t go away....
The bulk of crime isn’t terrorist activity.....
That stated, the authorities (especially right after 9/11) were way to quick to state (even before facts were in) that the cause was not terrorist related.
But to make a blanket statement like yours or to see a terrorist under every bed is just as irresponsible as the authorities after 9/11.

I occasionally made what we called contact explosives that were similar to large caps. If I recall, we would put solid iodine in a filter paper and then pour amonia in it. The wet iodine on the filter paper would be torn up into small pieces and left to dry. The next day we would litter them in the halls at school. They went off each time someone stepped on them.
Earlier I said it was amazing I was still alive. No, I never came that close to killing myself with chemicals. However, the class bullies and football players did not always like my tricks.
I actually used to glued small balsa-wood fins directly to the engine to try to get some modicum of stability... with mixed results.
And I probably shouldn’t even tell about the “war-head” I once launched from Mom and Dad’s back-yard around dusk. With a hollow plastic nose cone filled with home-made gunpowder and glued to the rocket body, the “parachute ejection” charge on the rocket engine served as the ignition system. It didn’t go very high because of the weight of the powder but golly-gee what a BOOM and what a FLASH. That one brought out about 8 police cars and a helicopter. They even went door-to-door asking people about it. Fortunately, Mom’s response was: “What explosion?”.

AND, I once made a remark in a HS chemistry class which the self-proclaimed school genius took seriously. He blew up the lab and we both had to write a 5,000 word essay of fire prevention.
Those were the days.
