The comment period for the Environmental Protection Agencys exploration of greenhouse gas regulation ended last Friday, with farmers lobbying furiously against the notion of a cow tax on methane, a potent greenhouse gas emitted by livestock.
The New York Farm Bureau issued a statement last week (PDF) saying it feared that a tax could reach $175 per cow, $87.50 per head of beef cattle and upward of $20 for each hog.
Such a tax would represent a massive hit on our industry here in New York, said Peter Gregg, a spokesman for the farm bureau, in an interview.
You could take all of our cows together and they probably wouldnt have the same effect on the atmosphere than the average traffic jam on the Tappan Zee Bridge, he added.
Farm officials from Texas to Alabama also sounded the alarm, and Mr. Gregg said that the response in New York among farmers was almost a panic.
The hysteria may be premature, however. The E.P.A. indeed issued an advanced notice of proposed rulemaking this summer that called for public comments on the idea of regulating greenhouse gas emissions from cars, as well as stationary sources which, yes, would include cows and other livestock.

cow fart tax ping
Put fart bags on cattle. LOL
You know, my Doctor gave me some pills that have made me, well gaseous, is 0bama going to tax my farts? and will it be a flat fee or per fart?
It’s only fair if you also tax the polar bears, wolves, and caribou.
And what about fish? I say, WHAT ABOUT FISH?
Whales, too! And Spotted Owls.
Considering a rancher would only get about a $1 per lb. at market, we’re looking at higher beef prices for sure.
Another “Is this from the Onion” story that has a person shaking their head. Silly bureaucrats.
All those farmers in Iowa will get their reward for voting Obummer
Yeah, that’s the truth
As a woman, in protest of this ABSOLUTE ABSURD TAX, I fart, now, as opposed to ‘toot’. I’ll just do it ‘out loud’ and not excuse myself to go to ‘the powder room’. If anyone asks........I’ll tell them.
(OK, not really, but this is NUTS!!!!!!!!)
Actually I think we ought to revolt by marching on Washington after drinking a few cheap beers and eating pickled boiled eggs. That ought to be revolting enough.
“What about horses? And Zoo animals.....elephants are many times bigger than cows are.”
What about people who are vegans? They certainly fart a lot - real sheet flappers!! Or so I’ve been told ;-0)
Don't write that in jest.
I have been saying that exact thing for quite some time now.
Soon, a government agency will command control of the atmosphere - for the good of the planet - and tax us all into uniform misery.
I predict it will become a Western World phenomena.
Part of the trend to Western Cultural extinction.
Why not just tax everything at 100% and be done with it? Why this incrementalism? It would be the flat tax we have all been waiting for.
