New Condom Ads Target Catholics, Latinos

New York, December 1 – Two new radio advertisements for condom use began to target Catholics in the U.S. Hispanic community here today, World AIDS Day, with the message that “good Catholics use condoms” to protect the people they love.

The 60-second Spanish-language ads, which will air nationwide in 2009, “take on myths about condom use in Catholic and Latino communities,” said a statement from the sponsors, the Washington-based nonprofit organization Catholics for Choice and the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health.

“Catholics use condoms because we know it is the responsible, loving and caring thing to do,” said Jon O’Brien, president of Catholics for Choice. Catholicism “has not always been honest about sex,” he said, adding that the spots will “break the silence” in the Latino community and encourage safer sex.

Hispanics now suffer 20 percent of new U.S. HIV infections and Latina teens are twice as likely to have an unintended pregnancy as their non-Hispanic peers, said Silvia Henriquez, executive director of the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health. “It is time we protect ourselves and our partners.”

One of the ads features a grandmother talking about her grandson, who is gay, and the other involves a couple discussing the importance of love, faith and condom use in their relationship. "We are Catholics and people of faith and we know sex is sacred and that we need to take care of each other. And this means using a condom every time we have sex," the second ad says.

“good Catholics use condoms” to protect the people they love.

Protect them from what? Protect them from a gift of God? Protect them from an STD that you have? How do either of these things make you a "good Catholic"?

A condom targeting Catholics is about as logical as a shampoo targeting bald headed folks.

Latina teens are twice as likely to have an unintended pregnancy as their non-Hispanic peers,

That is an "odd" statistic to cite on World AIDS day. I thought the STATED purpose of World AIDS Day was to cut down on the transmission of AIDS. Not to cut down on global population or "unwanted" pregnancies.

I’m not a Catholic, but I would think that a faithful Catholic would be outraged by this ad. Some lapsed Catholic purporting to say what “good Catholics” do with respect to condoms, in direct contravention of church teaching. Another one implying that homosexual acts are “sacred,” again in direct contravention of church teaching. If these “Catholics” don’t accept what the Catholic Church teaches, why don’t they go somewhere else, or start a religion of their own? I’ll tell you why, because they think they can do more damage to the Catholic Church by calling themselves “Catholic.”

Yes it is. The author of the most recent Truman biography used it in an L.A. Times op-ed piece, a few years ago, to show how great men can hold some not-so-great notions. Weird.

I would think that Catholics would know their teachings decidedly do not come from an ad agency.

I notice that the condom crowd is not marketing sodomy to Moolims. Wonder why.

New York, December 1 – Two new radio advertisements for alcholic beverages began to target Muslims in the U.S. Arab community here today, World Wine and Beer Day, with the message that “good Muslims drink responsibly” to protect the people they love.

The 60-second Arabic-language ads, which will air nationwide in 2009, “take on myths about alcohol use in Muslim and Arab communities,” said a statement from the sponsors, the Washington-based nonprofit organization Muslims for Beverage Choices and the National Arab Institute for Fermented Drink.

“Muslims enjoy alcohol responsibly because we know it is the friendly, convivial and healthy thing to do,” said Akbar al-Hajj, president of Muslims for Beverage Choices. Islam “has not always been honest about alcohol,” he said, adding that the spots will “break the silence” in the Arab community and encourage safer drinking.

Muslims have been receiving a growing number of DUIs nationwide in recent years, and Arab teens are twice as likely to become intoxicated while drinking as their non-Arabic peers, said Fatima Sayyed, executive director of the National Arab Institute for Fermented Drink. “It is time we protect ourselves and our fellow Americans.”

One of the ads features a grandmother talking about her grandson, who is a drinker, and the other involves a couple discussing the importance of moderation, responsibility and alcohol use in their daily lives. “We are Muslims and people of Ummah, and we know alcohol can be dangerous and that we need to take care of each other. And this means drinking only in moderation every time we drink,” the second ad says.

2399 The regulation of births represents one of the aspects of responsible fatherhood and motherhood. Legitimate intentions on the part of the spouses do not justify recourse to morally unacceptable means (for example, direct sterilization or contraception).

2370 Periodic continence, that is, the methods of birth regulation based on self-observation and the use of infertile periods, is in conformity with the objective criteria of morality. These methods respect the bodies of the spouses, encourage tenderness between them, and favor the education of an authentic freedom. In contrast, "every action which, whether in anticipation of the conjugal act, or in its accomplishment, or in the development of its natural consequences, proposes, whether as an end or as a means, to render procreation impossible" is intrinsically evil:

Thus the innate language that expresses the total reciprocal self-giving of husband and wife is overlaid, through contraception, by an objectively contradictory language, namely, that of not giving oneself totally to the other. This leads not only to a positive refusal to be open to life but also to a falsification of the inner truth of conjugal love, which is called upon to give itself in personal totality. . . . The difference, both anthropological and moral, between contraception and recourse to the rhythm of the cycle . . . involves in the final analysis two irreconcilable concepts of the human person and of human sexuality.
