Lingle responds to crticism for not meeting with Obama

Governor Linda Lingle was a no show today in Philadelphia when President-elect Barack Obama met with more than 40 of the nation's governors.

Hawaii Democrats are criticizing Lingle, a Republican, for not attending.

This afternoon, Lingle defended her decision.

Governor Lingle says her decision was not politically motivated, rather it had to do with timing.

But some island Democrats are upset over Lingle's decision, saying it doesn't make sense.

Governors from across the nation convened at Independence Hall in Philadelphia, for a historic face-to-face meeting with President-elect Barack Obama.

Hawaii's governor was absent.

"She wasn't there, she batted that hand of friendship away today. It's astounding, incomprehensible," said Congressman Neil Abercrombie, (D) Hawaii.

"My actions were not meant to be in any way disrespectful of the President-elect or anyone else," said Gov. Linda Lingle.

Lingle says she made a "practical" decision to skip the meeting.

During the meeting in Philadelphia, the governors discussed with Obama ways to get the economy back on track, and how to put more Americans back to work.

"The President of the United States has reached out to the state saying tell me what programs and projects you'd like to have, and I'm going to help you implement it. The governor of the state of Hawaii says she's not interested," said Abercrombie.

But Lingle says she doesn't think she missed much by declining the invitation.

"There was nothing substantive that came out of the meeting today. All the brew ha ha was caused by a couple of political types who don't know the election is over here in Hawaii," said Lingle.

Wow! Talk about some tension! Sounds like Governor Lingle was sorely missed at yesterday's big Governor's Convention with Obama in Philadelphia.

Strangely enough, the congressman that was so upset with Governonr Lingle's absense, Neil Abercrombie, was a very close friend of Barack Obama, Sr. from their days at the University of Hawaii. In fact, Abercrombie is the only member of Congress that knew Obama, Jr. as a child.

Obama Sr’s trip to Honolulu in Dec 1971 was bracketed by two trips that Obama's old snack bar friends from the University of Hawaii made to see him in Kenya. Late in 1968, Neil Abercrombie and Pake Zane traveled through Nairobi on a year-long backpacking trip around the world and stayed with Obama for several days before they made their way on to the port city of Mombasa and to India. No mention was made of Stanley “Ann” Dunham or Barack Hussein Obama Jr. Neil Abercrombie is now Hawaii State’s 1st district Representative in the US Congress. He is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus who until 1999, worked in open partnership with Democratic Socialists of America. Pake Zane runs a store called Antique Alley in Hawaii. Although in the 1960’s Hawaii offered a diverse cultural mix, native Hawaiian Pake Zane recalls that “He (Obama Sr.) was the first real black man I ever met”.

Call me crazy, but this article makes me think that there is more to the intense criticism than simply missing a Governor's Convention... I wonder what else it could be? Hmmm.

Actually she did not seal the BC and she has never stated she has seen the document. Hawaiian law keeps the BC sealed and it can not be released to anyone other than Obambi or on his direction, to someone else.

The only statement made by Hawaiian officials is that they confirmed that the document existed and was in their archives. Nothing more.

Its no coincidence Sarah Palin and Lingle are close friends, I actually know little about the Governor of Hawaii and I have never been there, BUT...

I do live in Wasilla, Alaska and know Sarah, most Alaskans take off out of here for extended vacations to Hawaii, many have a second home there, I don’t but I would be keenly interested in having a winter retreat as our winters in Alaska are very very long and I have no work right now.

I praise Governor Lingle in not allowing herself to be manipulated by the MSM or the President-ineligible.

Exactly what I’m thinking. Some action by Obama >caused< Lingle to have to seal the Birth record, and she’s ticked about having to do so me thinks. The action, although more than likely something she was reluctant to do also placed her in a difficult position.

That would be understandable, but to unload on her the way that they did and the blast her for not attending the conference appears to me that his little trip to Hawaii didn't take care of what he needed. I just cant imagine why Obama's longtime family friend would accuse her of "batting the hand of friendship away" if they already had the result that they wanted with the vital records?

She seems like a tough person and she could just have easily sealed a file for a pending legal action, thus preventing a "plumber" from switching docs out. Remember, he looked terrible that entire trip... and no, I don't believe for one minute it was granny. Lingle took a bad rap due to WND's story about the leak but I have seen many actions like this to preserve the integrity of a file when it is/will be subject to dispute at a later time.

No, you have it completely wrong.

As Governor it was her duty by law on request to seal access to the vault records. But she was not obliged to publicize this action. The fact that she went public with this action is evidence of her sending a message to the public via the media that a request was made to seal access.

Governor Lingle wanted everyone to know there were people trying to cover for Obama. To repeat, by law she had to do it, but she did not need to publicize it. Think about that.

On other issues Govenor Lingle has been a treasure to Republicans and Conservatives. And she has had to be very crafty in the way she handles issues because of the State’s overwhelming democrat base.

The only reason Governor Lingle got elected into office was because the democrat corruption was so thick that Hawaiians could not stand it any longer. But they are still democrat in allegiance. The fact that Governor Lingle got elected and continues to get elected is because she is smart, very smart. She would make a great running mate to Sarah Palin in 2012.
