Europe News DK ^

Two Moroccans arrested in Italy yesterday wanted to blow up the Milan Cathedral on Christmas.

They hoped an attack during the busy holiday would cost dozens of lives. This according to tapped phone calls, reports La Repubblica.

The two belonged to an Islamic terror cell which had been followed by the Italian police already for months...

Rachid Ilhami (31) and Abdelkader Ghafir (43) were arrested in Giussano, a city 25km away from Milan. The detectives gathered from tapped phone calls and confiscated computer files that the two also prepared attacks on a supermarket and a police bureau. They are arrested on suspicion of terrorism and eventual cooperation with al-Qaeda.

Ilhami had been living since he was ten in Italy. He is married and has two children. He worked as a blacksmith and in his free time worked in a center for PEACE ACTIVITIES, in the area of prime minister Silvio Berlusconi's villa, according to Corriere della Sera.

Why does this word keep coming up when terror cells are mentioned?

I’ve been in il Duomo di Milano a few times. Yes, it is downright amazing both inside and out. I spent a good 8 hours there with my now wife (was girlfriend at the time).
I wish I knew all of the proper terminology, but the basement area has various treasures & Christian artifacts dating back to God knows when....there are also caskets (again, wrong term) of various Popes, priests, etc.

Just curious for those more familiar with Milan....wasn’t Mussolini “hung out to dry” near il Duomo? I could swear he was, but I forget all of the details.

So help me if those bastards harm so much as a brick in the road near this place let alone an innocent person....

Why are there never any plots to blow up the Al Asqa mosque which sits like a hemorrhoid on the Temple Mount?

I think Mussolini was hung in Rome from a lamp post. I did not spend eight hours at the Duomo, but I could have.

I rudeboy, the cathedral was designed to accommodate 40,000 worshipers.[http://www.bluffton.edu/~sullivanm/milancath/duomo.html]
Owl_Eagle is correct: They probably would killed a lot more than dozens - had they been successful.

I stand corrected. I’ve been in that cathedral a number of times, and there’s no way I can be convinced that it’ll fit 40,000—but that’s just my opinion.

You were correct.

“Following his rescue, Mussolini headed the Italian Social Republic in parts of Italy that were not occupied by Allied forces. In late April, 1945, with total defeat looming, Mussolini attempted to escape to Switzerland, only to be captured and summarily executed near Lake Como by Communist Italian partisans. His body was taken to Milan where it was hung upside down at a petrol station for public viewing and to provide confirmation of his demise.”

You may be thinking of the Dome of the Rock which is the more noticeable gold-domed building on the Temple Mount. A man named Yoel Lerner was sentenced to prison in 1982 for attempting to blow it up.

I’ve been there and I can see where it would seat 4000. The experience of going there was marred by being constantly followed by pickpockets in the piazza and sidestreets.

Mussolini was hanged at a gas station - Fina station to be exact - by his heels from a beam.

All humor on the cathedral’s size aside, it shows how thoroughly evil these people are. They’d like to blow up a cathedral AT CHRISTMASTIME, and murder hundreds of church-goers.

How pathetic and sick.

Its main area is 14,000 square yards. You can fit three people standing in a square yard.
