Vatican Treasures on Display in New York
NEW YORK, DEC. 3, 2008 (Zenit.org).- Today is the opening day for an exposition of a body of works compiled in the Vatican Secret Archives, the Vatican Apostolic Library and the Vatican Museums.
The exposition is organized by Scrinium in collaboration with other Vatican cultural institutions. It will be held at the Italian Cultural Institute in New York until Jan. 7.
Among the pieces on display, the "Processus Contra Templarios" (Trial Against the Templars), stands out. It includes the unedited, complete acts of the ancient process of the Templars.
Another item in the exposition is the golden centennial Bible that contains medieval Christian art in the form of refined miniatures in gold, characteristic of manuscripts from the Romantic, Gothic and Renaissance periods.
The Vatican Apostolic Library project was begun in 1982 on the initiative of Pope John Paul II, who desired “to make known to the world treasures of wisdom and beauty.” It has enabled the transmission of very delicate codices, which otherwise would have been lost through history.

Some say the Church should sale all it has and give it to the poor; sure we have to love the poor, but we don't have to deprive the world of the fine art of the Vatican.
Now someone will say: Didn’t Jesus say sale everything and give it to the poor, yes, but that is a reference to an interior disposition of detachment.

Right.
So charge a healthy admission to visit what is nothing less than the finest museum in the world, and use the proceeds to provide job TRAINING for the poor.
Along the lines of don’t GIVE a man fish, teach him HOW to fish.

Pope John Paul II was amazing. Catholics have such a rich history and amazing historical artifacts that are a testimony to that history.
Many people have said we should sell them and give money to the poor. Which is silly. Many of these works are priceless. They are a testament to the artists who had a passion for God and were on fire with the Holy Spirit. They are a testament to our history.
The church does practice charity. Many people don’t know that our priests take vows of poverty as well as chastity.

Then we’re all in agreement! It’s our patrimony as Christians, as heirs to Western Civilization and as human beings.

During the trial of the Knights Templar the most debased and scandalous practices were described as their “crimes”. The trial was a sham, but the executions were real. Jacques De Moley was the last Grand Master of the order, he was burned at the stake and challenged both the Pope and the King of France to ‘Meet him at the throne of God’ to answer for their crimes. Both the Pope and the King died soon after.
The Templar's were innocent of everything except having money and lands that the King of France wanted.

Pope Clement's predecessor stood up to the King of France and was most likely poisoned for his trouble. Pope Clement was King Philip IV’s political puppet.

Items such as these show the longevity of our Christian Faith, they are glimpses into the past and what Christianity was like in different eras of time down through history.
Selling them would be similar to selling the Declaration of Independence from the National Archives...

And the Roman Catholic Church found them innocent, but the Kings of Europe of the day decided that plundering them was more productive, by the time the innocent verdict came out, it was too late for the Templars.

Say WHAT?
The Pope is the head of the Catholic Church and he found the Templars guilty.
By the time the Catholic Church got around to saying the Templars were innocent the last Templar was long dead along with everybody else involved.

I’ve been blessed enough to have been to the Vatican museum twice!
Unbelievable!!
When you see the statues from Egypt from around 1200 B.C., you will never read the Old Testament the same again.

I thought I ticked you off a little, maybe its my bad spelling.I owe you an apology. You were being sarcastic and I took your parenthetical remark in the title literally. Interesting, no one tells the directors of the Met or the Louvre to sell their collections and "feed the poor." Where would these items end up? In private collections where only a privileged few would see them.
