I worry all the time about something like this happening to my grandmother. It breaks my heart to see this disease rob her of everything she has ever known. She has survived for over twelve years with Alzheimer's but she is just an empty shell of her former self. I hope they make more progress with the treatment before my father starts showing signs of the disease. Alzheimer's is one illness that is just as hard on the family as it is on the patient.

You are correct. It is harder on the families. I worked with Alzheimer's residents for a few years, and watched the families suffer. When the neurologist diagnosed my husband, and said the word, "Alzheimer's", he didn't even flinch. A few days ago, I asked him if he was happy. His reply, "Why shouldn't I be?"
