Ann Romney Diagnosed with Early-Stage Cancer
The Washington Post ^ | 2008-12-05 | Michael D. Shear

Ann Romney, the wife of former Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, announced today that she was diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer and underwent a lumpectomy to remove the affected tissue.

In a statement, Romney said a lump was discovered last week during her annual mammogram at Brigham and Women's Hospital. She described the discovery as "technically not cancer but rather pre-cancer, as it has not become invasive." Doctors performed the lumpectomy today as an outpatient procedure.

"Mitt and I feel fortunate to have caught this so early," she wrote. "And, it reminds us how important it is for women to have regular mammograms. As in all cases of cancer, early detection is critical. Many families are facing medical hardships -- our hearts go out to all of you and also our wishes for healing holidays."

Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, was a leading contender to be the Republican presidential nominee, but lost that battle to Arizona Sen. John McCain.

I believe she was sick before this as well. MS maybe? I forget. She’s certainly had her share of trials.

Prayers...I wonder why so many more American women suffer from breast cancer these days. Birth control pills? Shunning breast feeding of infants? Smoking or other poor health regimens? Tanning beds?

... There must be some connection to some of the above as bodies exhumed from the early 1800s show hardly any cancers (they were dying of TB, and other now-curable diseases).

They died before the age when cancers usually start to develop. It’s sorta like Alzheimer’s. We’re only now living long enough to see it happen to people.

Difference between Mitt and Pony Boy is that Mitt wouldn’t be out there screwing around on his wife. Best of luck to the Romneys for a good bill of health.

Cancer is Cancer. Just like there is no such thing as being "a little pregnant" and there is no such thing as "a little cancer"!

Never, ever take Cancer for granted.

Pure BS. Cancer comes in all types and grades. Non-melanoma skin cancer is usually cured 99.999% of the time. More men die WITH prostate cancer than die FROM prostate cancer.

Furthermore, cardiovascular disease kills three times as many women as breast cancer does, and often suddenly. The most common presentation of a heart attack is sudden death.
