WASHINGTON U.S. President-elect Barack Obama's NASA transition team is asking U.S. space agency officials to quantify how much money could be saved by canceling the Ares 1 rocket and scaling back the Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle next year.
Obama pledged during his campaign to inject an additional $2 billion into NASA aimed in part at narrowing the gap between the space shuttle's retirement and the introduction of a successor system.
While NASA Administrator Mike Griffin and his senior managers are adamant that Ares and Orion are the right vehicles to fill that role, Obama did not endorse either system by name during his campaign.

With the exception of JFK, space exploration has never been popular with liberals. They’d rather this money be spent at home on welfare cheats and illegal aliens.
Whattttttttt?
and themselves
JFK was a WW II hero and a Cold Warrior. I wouldn’t lump him in with the likes of his little brother, Edward.
He promised to spend money on NASA.
Can anyone say Bait and Switch!
if so, FL is back to a Red state in 2112.
This is one thing that I can agree on with Obama. Private companies will have a viable replacement rocket and human rated capsule up and running before NASA ever gets anything done. Turn ISS missions over to the private sector. They’ll do it better and cheaper.
Sen. Barack Obama Pledges Space Advocacy

FLORIDA TODAY
posted: 8 August 2008TITUSVILLE - Sen. Barack Obama promised not to cut NASA funding and said Saturday at a town hall meeting he will rely on Florida Sen. Bill Nelson and revered astronaut and former Sen. John Glenn to help form his space policy.
"Under my watch, NASA will inspire the world once again and is going to help grow the economy right here in Brevard County," said the presumptive Democratic nominee, speaking to a crowd of 1,400 at Brevard Community College's Titusville campus.
Obama has changed an earlier position, in which he planned to delay the Constellation program five years and use up to $5 billion from the NASA budget for education.
"Here's what I'm committing to: Continue Constellation. We're going to close the gap (between the end of shuttle flight and the next program, Constellation). We may have additional shuttle flights," he said.
Look for reconnaissance satellites and missile defense programs to be cut next. God help us.
Mr Obama could save a lot of money by shutting down NASA. However, he would have to explain, in about 12 years, how India, China, Russia, Europe, Japan, Brazil, and others have moonbases and are going to Mars and the USA is converting the truck fleet to oxen-drawn.
Yup.
Whatever money is “saved” on the space program will promptly be wasted on welfare cheats, the gay agenda etc.
Theyd rather this money be spent at home on welfare cheats and illegal aliens.

Of course. Space shuttles do not vote for DemoRATS. Anything that does not support the far left Dims will be compromised or shut off. INCLUDING THE MILITARY. (ala Carter and Clinton).

Cutting these programs is a drop in the bucket financially, and will have two big effects. First, we can't just keep sending up the shuttle until they all fail. We will just start using the Russians for access to space. This is a horrible national security move. And the biggest effect will be to eliminate very technical, very hard to replace knowledge carried by knowledgable employee's brains. By the time we want to return to these programs again, the people will have moved on to something else.
This is all coming just as we are starting to have valid economis reasons for returning to the moon, such as mining Helium-3.
YES, HE DID
See above: "Here's what I'm committing to: Continue Constellation." Well, since the Aries rocket and Orion Crew Vehicle ARE Constellation, only the most rabbid Clintonian parser could say he did not endorse the systems by name.
Obama Lied, Space Died.
NASA; SDI, just two programs that will have to do with less or none at all so that the ‘urban voter’ may be rewarded for helping make history.

Brevard County, Florida ping.
Obama lied, the Space Coast died ping.
Let me know if you want on or off this list.
(not associated with the county government - NVA is a NGO!)
It’s only a request for info, but Mr Obama campaigned on speeding up the Ares/Orion. However, all bets are off.
The only person who was President while people were on the moon was Nixon.
Needs the money for ‘programs’.
What use does a 2nd world nation have with a space program?
That point is key. We want the smart guys (and gals) to have an outlet for their talents in THIS COUNTRY. We’ve already been outsourcing labor and manufacturing.. it’d be suicide to do that with the technical workers.
Thanx for the ping.
Sally Ride, denied.
A request for info, exploring the breaking of such an important campaign promise needs to result in singed fingers.
We need to wait and see what he does - I’m not going to panic yet.
He has sent mixed signals and has a knack for flip flopping.
I also agree that scrapping the shuttle’s replacement is a good idea. Manned spaceflight is not necessary for the development of space-based defense systems. Further, private industry can do manned space flight more cheaply and can innovate more quickly. Because the gov’t has been involved we’ve had to keep the shuttle going despite the fact that it’s basically ‘70s technology shoved into a school bus with wings.
As for going to Mars, let’s not waste the money for idle curiousity. The distance, the constant exposure to cosmic radiation, the dust microns in the thin Martian atmosphere, etc. make any prolonged human stay on the Martian surface risky beyond any feasible benefit. If the Chicoms or russkies want to put the first corpses on Mars, let them.
Obama will cost this nation trillions listening to the global warming frauds at NASA, but when it comes to listening to steely-eyed rocket men, Obama knows better.
but exploration for the sake of exploration is the very thing that gives greatness to Mankind. Unlike animals, we do more than simply eat and reproduce. Don’t we? Then let’s explore.
Promoting the useful sciences is one few express powers given to the Congress by the Constitution.
What question is more important to civilization than whether there is or was life on Mars?
The zero will cut
The Shuttle
The ISS, all this money and no science to date.
THe F35 and stall any future F22 buys
ALL of the advanced combat systems existing or planned
ALL but 3 (or maybe 4) of the carrier battle groups
The planned increases for the Army and USMC will be phased out over 2 to 4 years
There may be additional manning cuts across the board in all services, tho the Coasties may be spared the brunt of the cuts. NOAA is toast.
Feel free to add your picks...
Yesterday, Democrat Rep. Adam Schiff spoke before employees at JPL.
Basically, he lied about a lot of things, including the incoming administration’s support for the space community. BTW, they, like the car manufacturer community, voted for the guy. Fools!
He can do what he wants to as far as I am concerned.
I don’t really care.
The fools and idiots are in control now. Let them run things.
Better get used to the idea of Obama cutting programs. Literally EVERY federal program out there. BEGIN with a 25% across the board cut, and there is no conceivable way the big four: Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and Defense, are going to be unscathed, either.
At the very least, there will have to be means testing for EVERYTHING. Nobody who has any income, retirement, or savings will get anything from the government. Military pay for enlisted personnel will be reduced to close to room and board. Even WWII pay of $50/month for a private will be unlikely.
Entire government departments will be closed indefinitely, which will soon become permanent.
Right now, the US Post Office employs 786,000 employees. Their first round of layoffs has been announced as 40,000. Before all is said and done, there will probably be fewer than 300,000 postal workers. This is a good indicator of an *essential* government department.
Unessential workers, departments and agencies will be closed, and their budgets diverted to keep essential departments and agencies open.
The DEA, Department of Interior, Education, Homeland Security, NASA, NOAA, and many, many others will be reduced to a minimal staff or eliminated entirely. Average government salaries of $47,000 may be reduced by 90%.
In total, the US government employs about 1.8 million people outside of the military and Post Office. This may have to be reduced to 800,000.
NASA has become nothing more than a tool for environmentalist wackos...Where do you think all this global warming garbage came from?
Thats the other half
MORE food stamps
MORE “free” medical
More aid to dependant children
More school watchers
and on and on.
Buddy of mine sold his house and is moving onto his Crealock 37 to ‘full time’.
Plans to be in International waters by the 20th.
Something he has been planning for years, this just got him off dead center.
ping to post 13
He hasn’t learned from JFK, has he?
There go some more jobs...............................going, going, gone.
Yep. Yep. Yep. Lying P.O.S.
Awesome...bookmarked it.
Unfortunately I knew the minute he uttered the lie it needed documenting.
