Sentimental New York Democrats were rooting for Governor Paterson to appoint Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to replace Hillary Clinton in the U.S. Senate seat his father once held. But Kennedys not interested. It was a heart-wrenching decision, and it occupied me throughout Thanksgiving with my family, with Teddy, he says. Its not a good time for me to move to Washington, because I have a large and young family. Theyre all in school. Thats expensivethough not as pricey as holding on to the seat. Against formidable opponents, most likely Peter King and possibly Rudy Giuliani, to defend the seat, Im assuming its going to cost $30 million, he says. That means $60 million in four years. Instead, Im urging my cousin Caroline to take it, because I think she would be fantastic, he says. I sent her a note; I havent heard back from her. Shell be a huge force in the Senate. Any other ideas? Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand, he suggests. What about his ex-brother-in-law, Andrew Cuomo? I would leave those considerations to Governor Paterson, Kennedy says.
Is there a special election in ‘10 for this seat, or would the nominee serve the remaining 4 yrs?
He knows he is not qualified for a real job.
Boy, these people act like royalty, just assuming their family should be the anointed ones.
WOW! I never thought I’d see the day a Kennedy would turn down anything political. But it’s possible that there are too many skeletons in the closet to uncover.
I love the hypocrisy of the left, some candidates mentioned to replace Hillary are minority candidates, now why would Caroline want to prevent a black or hispanic from making history as a NY Senator? doesn’t seem very fair does it? I think she should withdraw her name and give a chance to someone who didn’t have the many advantages she had growing up. :snark:
“He knows he is not qualified for a real job.”
Neither is Caroline Kennedy. But being a Kennedy means you don’t have to have qualified. It’s kind of an entitlement thing.
Cuomo and Kerry Kennedy got DIVORCED??
RFK Jr. was convicted on drug charges years ago. And to listen to him talk, I think he was a heavy marijuana user, and that drugs affected his brain. Both the content of what he says and his speaking voice are off kilter.
Yes, and I think in the Clinton/Kennedy feud the Cuomo’s have sided with the Clintons.
Caroline wrote a book extolling Public Schools and when Imus asked her if she sent her OWN kids to public schools she was so taken back that Imus had to answer for her...”Of course you don’t”!! I still remember where I was when I heard that! What a HYPOCRITE she is...and CLASSLESS.
Just wait a few years, and Chelsea Clinton will be old enough to be a Senator.
Bill said that Chelsea has the best political skills in the family. She was basically eye candy in her mom’s presidential campaign, but, she would start out with some big advantages and name recognition if she ever wanted to go into politics herself.
Palin's not qualified to be Veep, because she's only been a mayor and governor.
I wonder why The Family didn’t consider Maria Shriver Schwarzenneger??
I love it when liberals are publically called on their hypocrisy :).
Agree Our representatives are too pompous and in for too long. 2 or 3 terms and they should be out. AND NO FAMILY MEMBERS OF THOSE ALREADY ELECTED. They all act like Kings and Queens.
I think RFK Jr figures that he can run for some other spot whenever he wants to, but that this is Carolineâs best shot at a Senate seat. I think RKF wants to horde more money working for various fake non-profits and he figures it’s all the same as long as a fellow Kennedy gets the job. These noxiously self-important and entitled Kennedys make me sick. I’m not wild about Mario or Andrew Cuomo, but Andrew Cuomo certainly deserves the Senate seat more than Caroline, who just shows up at benefits and makes platitudinous speeches about her father’s legacy and her mother’s favorite freaking poems or some such nonsense. What a bunch of losers are the people who actually root for any of the disfunctional Kennedy clan.
Special election, meaning having to run in ‘10.
I'd rather see him a Senator!
Please tell us you're legally blind. /s
Go Peter King (Giuliani will suffice too).
Liberal Republicans in hard left wing states are OK with me.
okay so the party that constantly complained that Sarah Palin didn’t have enough experience is sendind someone to the seanate with zip-zero-zilch experience.
Kennedys harshest public thrashing to date, however, came from one of his closest colleagues, Riverkeeper founder Robert Boyle. Along with seven other Riverkeeper board members, Boyle resigned in 2000 after Kennedy insisted upon hiring a convicted environmental felon as the groups chief scientist. At the time, Boyle told the New York Post that Kennedy is very reckless, and added that [h]es assumed an arrogance above his intellectual stature.
Plus a Senator has access to lots of information about the economy and what's happening in the world -- data that would be very valuable to anybody managing large investments.
She lives with her husband and three children in a spacious apartment on Park Avenue and in a shingled weekend house on Long Island, near the Hamptons.
She walks her daughters a few blocks to Brearley, the private girls' school she also attended and where she sits on the board of trustees.

IIRC she was instrumental in a disasterous headmistress appointment at Brearley.
And it's a long walk from Park to Brearley. I am certain they did NOT walk.
You mean because her name is Kennedy.
Oh please, enough of the Kennedys.
They need a generation to regroup and breed.
He sees how rich and powerful Al Gore Junior is getting without being in office. Why would he want to be burdened to be 1 of 100?
” She was basically eye candy in her moms presidential campaign....”
Eye candy? She is one of the most unattractive young women I have ever seen in my life.
And that is how monarchies and aristochracies began. Give time, we to would end up with either a king or an emperor.
Remember the Dianamania here in the good ol' USofA.
De Peeepols uhm, err, you know, has spoke, an' I...I mean to say, they wants ME, so, uhh, you know, I is The One, regardless of what an old piece of Whitey parchment says!
Rudy Giuliani would have a pretty good chance of winning, and Peter King would have an outside shot. Otherwise, I don’t see it happening in 2010.
Thank God. We’ve been spared another rotten apple off of that tree.
I meant to say that Chelsea was just there, she didn’t talk to the news media or the people much if at all. She’s sorta attractive but to each his own if you don’t think so.
I was trying to say that she was just there to be seen but didn’t do much else in her mom’s campaign.
God bless him, I hope he wins, I like him.
No offense meant, really. I just found “Chelsea” and “eye candy” in the same sentence too rich to pass up. Apparently in lefty circles, Chelsea has “star power!”

One rule for Sarah Palin, another for Caroline Kennedy
MSNBC, the host Chris Matthews is in full gush mode, (”We all want to be the protector of Caroline Kennedy”), as are most of his guests. When I last suggested that many Americans regarded the Kennedys as their de-facto royal family, some of our more emotional readers howled that this was just a fantasy peddled by the left-wing media.
Well, dream on. The common consensus among New York politics observers is that, as the state enters probably some of the most difficult years in its history, the job is hers for the taking. New York likes its celebrity politicians - cf Mrs Clinton - but glossing over the lack of relevant experience on the Kennedy CV so soon after trashing Sarah Palin for the same weakness seems a mite like double standards.
Matthews has just conceded that the Kennedy thing is “almost like royalty”.

Kennedy for Senate?
Dec. 5: A Hardball panel talks about the possibility of Caroline Kennedy replacing Hillary Clinton in the Senate representing New York.
It’s hard to get rid of a cockroach infestation.
When he talks he sounds like he’s drowning slowly. I’m glad he’s staying home with the kiddees.
Now for Caroline. Holy JoeScarbrough, you know what this means? If she is half way competent and gets her sea legs she may very well be the Dem. nominee in 2016. Doesn’t make a difference if Obama wins or loses a second term, I don’t think an old Joe Biden would want the nomination. Caroline in 2016? Allah help us.
I believe that the special election would be for the remainder of the term. In this case expiring in 2012. An appointment is until a special election or at the latest the next state general election.
These people talk about the sacred trust and PRIVILEGE to be a high government official as if they were trading old 1970s baseball cards. How elitist and disgusting. This has nothing to do with representative democracy and all about ruling and overlording to selfishly and narcissitically get one’s psychological rocks off.
“Here here! Word is Kennedy wants his wife appointed when he steps down. Talk about unqualified!”
Two things. Fatboy won’t step down. Also,if Miss Vicki wants to fill Teddy’s seat she better bring the checkbook to Beacon Hill. The rats in the State House and some of the Congressional delegation are drooling to move up. It will cost her plenty if she wants it.
