Howie thread for the week; I'll post his column once it goes up on Herald site.
Once Howie’s column goes up I’ll post it (if not tonight, then early tomorrow).
Noticed via Wikipedia that Howard Louis Carr Sr. died at the age of 103 on October 1 of this year.
I can’t remember if Howie mentioned it on air, though he may have taken a trip shortly after this
to N.C. for the funeral (Columbus Day weekend):
Howie has mentioned his parents from time to time on air; his Dad was about 47 years older than Howie
(born in 1905 while Howie Jr. was born in ‘52). Quite a long time to be on this Earth. I think Howie worked
for his father at a hotel down in Florida, for a time...
>> GREENSBORO - Mr. Howard Louis “Del” Carr, Sr., 103, died Wednesday, October 1, 2008, at Wesley Long Hospital.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, October 13, at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.
Mr. Carr was born in Portland, Maine, on January 11, 1905, and graduated from Portland High School in 1924. He spent most of his professional life in resort hotel management, along with service in the Army Air Force in World War II, and with Burlington Industries in the 1940’s.
Mr. Carr came out of retirement in 1977 to assist Mr. Joseph M. Bryan, Sr. of Greensboro, until Mr. Bryan’s death in 1995.
In recent years, Mr. Carr took great enjoyment in remaining active, going out to lunch almost every day in his wheelchair, accompanied by his son, Jonathan.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Frances; two sons, Jonathan Sutton Carr of Greensboro and Howard Louis Carr, Jr. of Wellesley, Mass.; and five grandchildren, Suzanna, Frances, Charlotte, Carolyn, and Christina.
(btw I believe the first two names mentioned are Howie’s kids from his first marriage. We’re familiar with the children he has with Kathy, Tina, Charlotte, and Carolyn...)
103 years old! He came out of retirement at 72 and worked until he was 90? Wow.
It sounds like Mr. Carr had a wonderful life.
May he rest in peace.
Agreed...Howie had mentioned on air he kept driving into
his 90s, or maybe there was a point where he gave it up.
I’m 10 yrs younger than Howie (I was born in 1962) and my Dad is 41 yrs older than me (born in 1921). My Dad can’t drive anymore so I and my siblings take turns going down to the Cape to help him shop, take stuff to the dump, etc. And here
was Howie’s father, living to be over the century mark..R.I.P.
Mom is 78 and mostly gave up driving (her own wise decision!) so my brothers and I constantly let her know that somebody is always available to take her shopping or anywhere else she needs to go.
I thought it was "Howahd LAHWRENCE Cahhhr."
I don’t know the complete story of how it started on the radio, but Howie’s real middle name is Louis, not Lawrence. Howie continues to pretend that his real middle name is Lawrence.
VB started that rumor
Seize the pay... of bloated hacks
Carpe per diem!
By Howie Carr | Sunday, December 7, 2008 | http://www.bostonherald.com
So its up to Gov. Deval Patrick to decide how much of a pay raise the Legislature gets next month.
Forget the bogus mathematical formulas, Gov - give the solons the hike they so richly deserve.
Nothing. Zero. Nada. The goose egg. The doughnut. Bupkes.
According to the law - admittedly, a laughable word to use when discussing the Legislature - the solons must get a raise based on the previous years median household income in the state.
Most people who dont have hack jobs took a pounding this year. But the actual 2008 income stats wont be available for months. So the governor and his Payroll Charlies who make the call have to . . . wing it.
On second thought, Deval, dont just freeze the legislators pay. Cut it. Make them feel our pain.
Im not saying every solon is a drunken, corrupt buffoon. Its that 90 percent that give the other 10 percent such a bad rap. Wilkerson, Marzilli, DiMasi, Rogers, Spellane - its been another banner year for ethics on Beacon Hill, yes?
Already these dolts are paid a base of $58,237.15, plus bonuses for their alleged roles in leadership. Every year more and more of these bums get bought off with that extra $7,500 that can be removed at the whim of the speaker, who also grabs an extra $35,000.
But theres more. All the reps who live more than 50 miles from Beacon Hill - a third of them - get to take more than $150 a day off their federal income taxes for every day the Legislature is in session. This is why they so seldom adjourn. It would require them to pay taxes like the rest of us do.
And dont forget another cash perk, their per diems, the money they collect for showing up to work each day (or just saying they do, on their cheat sheets).
The per-diem rate goes up the further you live from the State House. If you live in Boston or Somerville, you get $10 a day. Weymouth is $18, Worcester is $36, and so on, all the way up to $100 for Nantucket.
Do you get paid extra for actually showing up at your job? I didnt think so. So far this year, Rep. Dan Bosley has collected $15,390 just in per diems. In second place is Rep. Denis Guyer, with $10,824.
But wait, it gets better. Some of these statesmen are collecting per diems, then charging their traveling expenses to their campaign committees. In the real world, thats called double-dipping.
What a great country. They get a pay raise, and their constituents get to pay $7.50 every time they drive through the harbor tunnels. And the guy who gets to make the call on how much extra the reps get is Deval Patrick, who in 2006 promised everyone he would cut their property taxes - how much has your bill gone down?
