Attorney Who Aided Terri Schiavo’s Husband Now Advising Barack Obama

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- An attorney who won an award for representing Terri Schiavo’s husband Michael in his efforts to kill his disabled wife is now an advisor to the transition team of incoming president Barack Obama.

Thomas Perrelli, who raised over $500,000 for the pro-abortion presidential candidate and is the managing partner of a Washington law firm, Jenner & Block LLP, is helping advise Obama on putting together a Justice Department team.

However, Perrelli provided Michael Schiavo with legal advice during his response to the Congressional bill that President Bush signed allowing the Schindler fail to take their lawsuit seeking to prevent Terri’s euthanasia death from state to federal courts.

Perrelli led the Jenner & Block team that developed the legal briefs opposing appeals for Michael and he ultimately received the Albert E. Jenner, Jr. Pro Bono Award in October 2006 for representing Terri’s former husband at no cost.

On Michael’s legal team, Perrelli worked with infamous pro-euthanasia attorney George Felos as well as lawyers from the Florida chapter of the ACLU.

Obama’s selection of Perrelli to participate on his Justice Department transition team is no surprise given his comments on Terri’s painful 13-day starvation and dehydration death during the presidential campaign.

During his debate with Hillary Clinton in the Democratic presidential primary, Obama said his biggest mistake was voting with a unanimous Senate to help save Terri.

In March 2005, just weeks before Terri died, Congress approved legislation allowing her family to take its case from state courts to federal courts in an effort to stop the euthanasia from proceeding.

Terri was not on any artificial breathing apparatus and only required a feeding tube to eat and drink. Her family had filed a lawsuit against her former husband to allow them to care for her and give her proper medical and rehabilitative care.

The Senate unanimously approved a compromise bill, which the House eventually supported on a lopsided bipartisan vote and President Bush signed, to help the disabled woman.

Obama said he should have stood up against the life-saving legislation.

“It wasn't something I was comfortable with, but it was not something that I stood on the floor and stopped,” Obama said.

“And I think that was a mistake, and I think the American people understood that that was a mistake. And as a constitutional law professor, I knew better,” he added.

That wasn't the first time Obama said he regretted supporting the bill to protect the disabled woman.

During an April 2007 debate, Obama said, "I think professionally the biggest mistake that I made was when I first arrived in the Senate. There was a debate about Terri Schiavo, and a lot of us, including me, left the Senate with a bill that allowed Congress to intrude where it shouldn't have.”

"And I think I should have stayed in the Senate and fought more for making sure [Terri's parents couldn't take their case to federal court to save her life]," he explained.

Since Terri’s death, the Schindler family has established a foundation to help disabled and elderly patients obtain proper medical care and legal and other assistance when they are denied it.

Poll Shows Britons Favor Euthanasia, Showing of Assisted Suicide on Television

London, England (LifeNews.com) -- Following the controversial screening of an assisted suicide on a television program last week, a new poll finds Britons favoring euthanasia. The YouGov poll also shows a majority of English residents had no problem with televising the disabled man's death.

The poll, conducted for the London Times, surveyed more than 2,000 people and found that half (61 percent) would consider an assisted suicide for themselves while 15 percent would not and the rest were undecided.

The survey also showed 61 percent believed there was no problem with Sky TV showing the death of Craig Ewert, who killed himself in an assisted suicide in Switzerland. Just 27 percent were opposed to the screening...

Both involved publicity hungry vultures, Kevorkian and Dignitas' Ludwig Minelli (among others), who use their ghoulish fame to push a death on demand agenda.

Here's a difference: Kevorkian helped kill for free, while Minelli's group charges about $8000 to be made dead...

March for Life Soldiers On Despite Pro-Abortion Barack Obama's Inauguration

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- With the inauguration of incoming pro-abortion president Barack Obama, some pro-life advocates have been concerned that next year's March for Life will be canceled. However, that's not the case and the organizers of the March are moving full speed ahead with plans for a large event.

The pro-life movement worked overtime to oppose Obama during the presidential campaign and, with his election, pro-life advocates hope a strong March for Life will send the new president a signal that they don't want him promoting unlimited abortions.

This year's March will take place on January 22 -- on what will be the thirty-sixth anniversary of the infamous Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that allowed abortions for any reason throughout pregnancy.

In addition to concerns about the March due to the inaugural, some pro-life advocates have wondered whether the March for Life is taking place because they haven't received significant information about it.

March for Life organizers had computer problems that have limited their ability to get timely information to pro-life groups nationwide as they normally do months in advance.

But Nellie Gray says she is working hard to turn out the largest pro-life contingent possible.

"We are looking forward to having huge crowds in our nation's capitol to give voice to the unborn through two days of pro-life activity immediately following the presidential inauguration," she said in an email LifeNews.com received.

Because of the high demand for hotel rooms in association with the inauguration, Gray urges pro-life advocates to make plans now to obtain hotel accommodations or housing in the area.

With Obama becoming president on a Tuesday, the expectation is that the March will come either one or two days after he signs an executive order rescinding the Mexico City Policy...

It is “Illegal” to Stop Food and Hydration of Vulnerable Patients: Top Italian Minister

ROME, December 17, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A high-level minister in the Italian government has called “illegal” the proposal to starve and dehydrate to death vulnerable patients in the care of the country’s nationalised health service. The news comes within hours of Italian media confirming that Eluana Englaro, known as Italy’s Terri Schiavo, was to be moved this week to a clinic that is willing to participate in her killing by removing her feeding and hydration tube.

Maurizio Sacconi, Italy’s Minister of Labour, Health and Social Policies, told a press conference that it is “illegal” for health care facilities funded by the government to remove the food and hydration of vulnerable patients with the intention of killing them. He referred to Article 25 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities that says to stop feeding and hydration is discrimination against disabled people.

Last month, Italy’s highest appeals court, the Court of Cassation, ruled that 38 year old Eluana, who has been in a condition of diminished consciousness since an auto accident in 1992, could be killed by the removal of her food and hydration, a move that has been condemned by Church officials in this strongly Catholic country as tantamount to murder. Although media has consistently referred to Eluana as being attached to a “life support system,” she is physically healthy and not dependent on a ventilator and only requires assisted feeding and ordinary nursing care...

South Korean Physicians Refuse to Pull Life Support from Disabled Woman, Appeal to Supreme Court

SEOUL, S. Korea, December 19, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Doctors at Severance Hospital in Sinchon-dong are refusing to carry out the sentence of the Western District Court ordering doctors to remove life support, including feeding tubes, from a comatose woman. The physicians are appealing the ruling to S. Korea's Supreme Court.

AsiaNews reports that the administration of Severance Hospital said that it would wait until December 17, the deadline established by the District Court for carrying out the euthanasia, before taking any action, and has now rejected the court's decision.

"This is a question concerning life, and requires the highest degree of prudence," said hospital director Park Chang-Il.

LifeSiteNews reported earlier this month on the case, which centers on 75-year-old Kim Ok-kyung, who fell into what was reported as both a "coma" and a "persistent vegetative state" in February while undergoing a lung examination.

The patient’s family filed a court request in May asking the hospital to take the woman off life-support, claiming that extending Kim's life using medical devices would prolong her "painful and meaningless" existence. The Seoul Western District court accepted the request to halt treatment, ordering the removal of feeding and ventilator tubes.

Anti-euthanasia groups are condemning the decision by the District Court, which requires the suspension of both feeding and artificial ventilation...

Australian "Experts" Want to Target Down Babies for Eugenic Abortion

December 19, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Can you imagine if "the experts" suggested that genetic tests be done on all pregnant women to screen for supposedly undesirable racial characteristics or a propensity for homosexuality (if that could be done), with the goal of vastly reducing the number of babies born with those traits? There would a clarion outcry.

Well, that is precisely what is happening in Australia, only the targets are unborn babies with Down syndrome, people that "the experts" want very much to cull from society by preventing most from ever being born. From the story:

“Australia urgently needs a national screening policy for Down syndrome, experts say, after international research showed it could halve the number of babies born with the incurable genetic condition. Access to the four tests that help detect if a foetus has Down syndrome varies widely ... leading to stark differences in birth and termination rates...

“Euan Wallace, professor of obstetrics at Monash University, said: ‘In Australia in 2008 every single woman should be offered and have access to state-of-the-art screening tests irrespective of age.’... Professor Wallace said NSW Health's age-based policy is ‘15 years out of date and not good public health policy.’”

This is rank eugenics. Germans in the 1930s called it racial hygiene. Not long ago, it was considered the worst sort of bigotry. Not today, apparently because "the experts" tell us so...
