Zimbabwe Cholera Outbreak: World Vision Distributes 500 cholera kits

BEITBRIDGE, ZIMBABWE (ANS) — Following the recent outbreak of Cholera epidemic in Zimbabwe, the World Vision is at present distributing 500 cholera kits to help protect its staff and other members of the communities that were affected.

This fact was made known in a statement by World Vision’s Humanitarian and Emergency Affairs Director in Zimbabwe, Daniel Muchena, adding that a single cholera kit has enough supplies for 50 people and also contains cholera drugs, water purification tablets, disinfectants, re-hydration kits, and surgical materials such as gloves and sanitizers.

He noted that additionally, four World Vision staff members with health related backgrounds are working in the quarantine camp in Beitbridge to assist in the clinical management of more than 1,000 patients.

Muchena said that the cholera outbreak is currently affecting the nation of Zimbabwe, where political and economic turmoil have already put the country in a state of upheaval stating that his organization is currently working with local partners, including the government, to contain the cholera outbreak which is fast spreading into neighboring Botswana and South Africa.

He noted that a United Nation’s report has it that nearly 9,000 suspected cases of cholera have been reported so far in Zimbabwe, resulting in 366 deaths and that the situation is expected to worsen as the rainy season approaches.

“At this time, sponsored children in projects supported by World Vision donors in the United States have not been affected. Our coordinated response includes providing desperately needed medical supplies, drilling and repairing boreholes for clean water, improving sanitation in urban areas, and conducting a massive health education campaign aimed at reaching two million people. We have also mobilized thousands of volunteers through a network of local churches to help prevent the spread of cholera by cleaning up their cities,” he added.

He said that the rapid deterioration of Zimbabwe’s health system, lack of adequate water supply, and lack of capacity to dispose of solid waste and repair sewer blockages are contributing to the spread of the outbreak adding that other factors include lack of hygiene practiced by vendors, food outlets, and a transient population.
