CHICAGO (AP) - A federal judge in Chicago has ordered Governor Rod Blagojevich released on his own recognizance after the Democrat was hit with federal corruption charges.

The governor was arrested at his home Tuesday on charges he conspired to sell or trade President-elect Barack Obama's vacant Senate seat to the highest bidder.

U.S. District Judge Nan Nolan said "Good afternoon, governor" in greeting Blagojevich at the afternoon bond hearing. The governor was wearing sweat pants, gym shoes and an athletic shirt.

He was released on a signature bond that specifies that he'll forfeit $4,500 bond if he doesn't appear in court. Blagojevich also was ordered to relinquish his passport and his firearm owner's identification car[d]...

Get accused of corruption, a non-violent crime, and you forfeit your right to self defense? That's crazy, regardless of Blagojevich having his day in court. Make no mistake. Most marxists are guilty as sin.

What’s the name of that park in downtown Chicago - the one where the former governor “shot” himself?

If it was in Chicago.... he probably had help pulling the trigger. You know those things can be a bit tricky....

I listened intently to the news reports to see how long it would take them to get around to saying he was a Democrat, if ever. The one newscast I was watching I don’t think they ever mentioned it. Also not on the local radio station that uses Fox for news feeds. I think the local stations that use Fox ought to start demanding some sort of standard in ID’ing the accused’s party affiliation. Like, everyone gets ID’d by the fifth sentence or not at all. I think with Fox you might actually make some headway. Failing that, I think the local stations should start editing the blurbs so they all work the same.

OTOH, I was surprised how much air PBS gave this. While not mentioning that he was a Democrat, it was obvious from the dialog, and they didn’t seem to be making any attempt to conceal it. I was actually wondering if he did something to piss off the lefties or maybe this was some kind of internal power struggle. You NEVER see any attention given to accusations of wrongdoing if the subject is a Democrat, and yet they talked about it for 10 minutes or more.

Blagojevich was overheard complaining at one that Obama's people are "not going to give me anything except appreciation." He added: "(Expletive) them."

Am I wrong in thinking that this indicates that Obama's "people" knew Blago was selling the Senate seat. If you know of criminal activity, don't you go to the prosecutors office and talk to them? Isn't this what we would want from a President-elect?

Is this consistent with, "the President had one nothing wrong"?

Just asking. On the other hand, I guess "don't snitch" is somewhere in the "living constitution"?

So Obama's people were solicited for a bribe.

Did they report it?

On this we may be seeing more than is there. If O had said something like "your help in this matter will be deeply appreciated", I would not read anything into that. It is simply a politeness that MIGHT weigh in some future razor-close decision. I have said that sort of thing myself with no dark meaning intended or inferred.

It wouldn’t surprise me. I think that Gov B. would want to stay locked up for his safety, especially since he already voiced his opinion of Obama. Plus he most likely will start talking as soon as he sees the time he could get for his crimes.

Somewhere Obama's people and Blago came to the "understanding" that there would be no cash or quid pro qua in this nomination. If Blago made his conditions for the appointment clear, Obama or his people have a problem IMO. If it was as you say, no problem.

Some of the quotes make it seem that Obama's folks outright rejected a "seat for a price" deal. Don't you think so?

Fireplace operator's ID. Not a good time of year to lose it, especially in Chicago.

What’s the Democratic Governor doing with a FOID? Thought Illinois was so safe the people don’t need guns. Surely Springfield isn’t more dangerous than Chicago, where Mayor Daley (and Obama) assure us people don’t need to have self defense capability :-)

[Not addressing the fact that the FOID is another infringement that is supposed to be unconstitutional — if we still have one.....]

What’s sad about this whole thing is he has not done anything yet that would cause a liberal to go after him, so he has obviously ticked off someone connected to the Justice Dept.. Who would that be? Couldn’t be Hillary, this isn’t familiar bahavior, she doesn’t have a lock box on the FBI or installed judges. This has got me completely confused.

Get accused of corruption, a non-violent crime, and you forfeit your right to self defense? That's crazy,

You have no such right in Illinois.

If you had such a right, why would you need a piece of paper, a FOID, to be able to exercise it? /sarc

Blogo, Daley, and Obama are big time gun grabbers. Although Obama has so little experience he hasn't grabbed too many.

Besides, the Judge could have ordered him held without bond as a major flight risk. He'd likely be welcome in Bolivia or Uraguay, or even Argentina. Or failing that Hugo or whichever Castro is still alive, would also welcome him. He's their kinda guy.

He probably had a hand in writing the law that requires a FOID to be surrendered. Certainly he and Daley are the major roadblocks to getting Concealed Carry in Illinois. IL is one of only two states, the other being Wisconsin, which have no provision at all for a law abiding citizen to be able to carry a concealed weapon. It's also illegal to carry any weapon openly, unless one is hunting or target shooting. Here's the NRA-ILA's summary of carrying in Blogo's state:

CARRYING It is unlawful to carry or possess any firearm in any vehicle or concealed on or about the person, except on one’s land or in one’s abode or fixed place of business. It is unlawful to carry or possess any firearm on or about one’s person upon any public street, alley, or other public lands within the corporate limits of a city, village, or incorporated town, except when: an invitee thereon or therein; for the purpose of the display of firearms or the lawful commerce in firearms; or when on one’s land or in one’s abode or fixed place of business.

Exceptions are persons using their firearms on established target ranges; licensed hunters, trappers, or fishermen while engaged in their licensed activity; transportation of firearms that are broken down in a non-functioning state or are not immediately accessible (e.g., in the trunk of a car); and transportation, carrying, or possession of a firearm which is unloaded and enclosed in a case, firearm carrying box, shipping box, or other container, by the possessor of a valid FOID. Under the Wildlife Code, it is unlawful to have or carry any firearm in or on any vehicle or conveyance unless unloaded and enclosed in a case.

So you need to have a FOID to possess a weapon, but you can not lawfully have that weapon ready for self defense, except on your own property, including your own business.

I hope they lock him up in the SuperMax, and throw away the key. But likely he'll get Club Fed, one of the minimum security prisons.

Except in Chicago, where guns are indeed registered.

Blogo is Chicago Mayor Daley's boy. Daley was likely to get a percentage of whatever Obami's seat went for.

How could he post bail, it’s not like he could shake anyone else down?

I heard on the radio Blago commutes a relatively short hop home two or three times a week costing the state tax payer $2,500 per trip.

Blago was one of the biggest gun grabbers there was when the jerk was in congress. I hope the police go to the governors mansion and confiscate all his now illegal guns.
