Scottish MP Pushes Assisted Suicide Bill that Includes Right to Die for Children

EDINBURGH, December 10, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Despite attracting little support from colleagues, Scottish Parliament Member Margo McDonald is continuing to fight for a bill to legalize assisted suicide. McDonald’s bill is so broad that it would entitle children of 12 and younger to choose to kill themselves.

McDonald held a consultation yesterday on the End of Life Choices (Scotland) Bill in an effort to garner more support. So far, McDonald has the support of only three other Parliament members, whereas eighteen are needed for the bill to merit review at Holyrood.

During the consultation, McDonald said that the age limit for assisted suicide consent should coincide with the age when children are allowed to decide which parent to live with after a divorce. Children older than 12 are typically consulted in Scotland's custody battles, with exceptions occasionally made for younger children deemed mature enough.

In a sound byte available on the online version of the Herald, McDonald, who suffers from Parkinson’s, said it is "absolutely inhumane" and "cruel" not to allow ailing individuals access to lethal drugs. She claims that she has received large amounts of correspondence supporting her initiative to allow patients to ask doctors for assistance in dying. Euthanasia campaigners in Scotland, according to the Herald, say there is a "small but significant" demand among Scots.

MacDonald said: “There are lots of people up and down Scotland who would like to make sure that they miss the last - and for them most intolerable - part of life, because of incapacity, loss of dignity, loss of control, insufferable pain perhaps.”

McDonald suggested that Scottish doctors already underhandedly administer lethal amounts of painkillers to suffering patients with the understanding that the patient wishes to die. "I think some doctors are happy that that area of ambiguity should remain," she said, "but other doctors would rather be protected by the law."

Health secretary Nicola Sturgeon said she was against assisted suicide, and noted she was not convinced that a law granting immunity to doctors killing their patients could be adequately modified to safeguard against abuses.

Ms. MacDonald began her campaign in March when she entreated Parliament to legalize assisted suicide so that she could seek death if her disease caused life to become unbearable.

Earlier attempts to introduce euthanasia legislation at Holyrood have met with a similar lack of enthusiasm. Jeremy Purvis, the Liberal Democrat Parliament member, drafted "mercy killing" legislation in 2004 but also failed to find support among colleagues.

Assisted suicide is illegal in the entire U.K. However, legislation dealing with assisted suicide, known as the Coroners and Justice Bill, is scheduled for consideration in the British Parliament, though the scope of the bill is yet unclear.

We ARE NOT talking about the cessation of medical treatment, we are talking about medical treatment which is SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED to kill.

Oh and I wasn’t the one who brought up the “death with dignity” strawman, I was refuting it.

The government is not preventing you or anyone else from dying (except of course those who are incarcerated), pro-euthanasia laws are designed to get the government to condone and participate in suicide.

Since when should the government or you have a say in how I live and die. That is between me and the Lord. I don't want the government to participate in my suicide in ANY way. Why do you want the government to control me and my life?

This screaming nosedive into hell just won’t stop.

CHILDREN???!??!?!?!?

The ***holes want to have doctors kill CHILDREN as long as the children “ask to die”. What child would EVER ask to die? Unless they were told they could? This is so evil I am sickened and furious. Of course, if the demons can kill children before they’re born and push for this to be broadened in every possible way, then it shouldn’t shock me.

But it does.

I think something/s is going to come along to put a stop to this. There is Someone in charge.

I’m through with you silly games. ALL I want government to do is PROTECT innocent life, you are obviously opposed to that.

Why are YOU so attracted to pro-life threads?

The government cannot prevent you from killing yourself right now. Why don’t you prove me right?

Oh, I get it, you are talking about the ping to the “Terri Dailies” thread.

The Terri Dailies thread is a thread which changes every month or two and is dedicated to the protection of innocent life. Jim Robinson is a pro-life conservative and he is supportive of these threads.

You may want to visit some of these threads, you just might learn something.

For the record Terri DID NOT die due to cessation of ANY medical treatment (her estranged, adulterous “husband” had tried that before and failed), Terri died because she was denied food and water.

I believe you. It's not your own killing you're pushing for.

What in the world is happening to sanity?

God help us all and protect us from this culture of death.

Don’t people realize that there’s no “undoing” or “do overs” when a person kills himself?

Little old lady in Auburn, Alabama, ended up bed ridden in a hospital and then a nursing home. She had been very active in the Lutheran Church there and being bed ridden was emotionally hard for her. I went in with some friends to see her and the friend took Communion to her. We read scripture, sang some hymns and then talked after wards. She was feeling helpless until I told her a story I’d heard from a praying woman in Montgomery, Alabama. Seems this woman had a heart for missionaries and would pray for certain ones she knew of by name every day. Well one early morning around 2 or 3 AM, she was awakened with a desire to pray but she didn’t know who for. So she got up out of bed, went to her chair where she sits and reads scripture and prays and just started praying and praying for the safety and security of missionaries and for God to bless whoever it was she was praying for. Well, about three months later, our church had as guest speakers a couple of missionaries who had just gotten back from Africa . . . don’t recall where exactly . . . and the couple told of their mission and about one day particularly when mercenaries came to the village where they were and threatened them and their church members and planned to set fire to their chapel and kill everyone in the village as well as take everything of value. For some unknown reason the mercenaries got into an argument among themselves with the usual yelling and shouting and shoving. Then, without any of the villagers saying or doing anything, just praying quietly together, the missionaries said that the mercenaries looked around and started acting afraid themselves. They kept looking off in the distance as if they saw an army coming down the road. The missionary saw nothing unusual when he looked down the road. Finally the mercenaries decided to leave and took off without firing one shot and without taking anything of value. Well, you can imagine what happened in church. The praying lady got up and asked the date and time this happened and it was exactly the day and time she’d been awakened to pray — only it was during daylight where the missionaries were. Lots of alleluias ensued in church. I told that story to the bed ridden little old lady and inspired her to pray for whomsoever the Lord laid upon her heart. And until she died, she was always praying. The nursing home staff visited her often just to have her pray with them. She was a blessing to all.

So here’s a woman that might have been encouraged to euthanize herself if she lived in Britain. But what about all those people who needed her prayers? What about the blessings that nursing home staff would have missed out on?

Euthanasia is insane. It’s unnatural. It’s like destroying a flower right at the peak of its bloom. Depression can be overcome, but once a person is dead, there are no do-overs.

I’m talking about your stay on FR, idiot. I already advised you to see if the government will prevent you from committing suicide, since you are so sure that no one will be able to commit suicide without changing laws to suit you. So go ahead! ANd if you’re stopped or arrested, come back and tell us.

Who said I’m a Christian? Only Christians can recognize evil when they see it?

Your presence on this thread - discussing an article promoting that young children be allowed to commit suicide under a doctor’s “care” - and your promotion of changing laws to suit your desire to see others die (since you aren’t offering to off yourself), in the name of freedom, and your utter refusal to admit to any downside, any slippery slope (as has already happened in several European countries), or indeed, any negative consequences at all - and making no sense whatsoever - is evidence that you enjoy promoting evil.
