Gun (and ammo) prices going up [Guess why?]

LEE COUNTY, Fla.- The Suncoast Gun Show in North Fort Myers is attracting huge crowds this weekend.

"It's definitely one of the most crowded ones I've been in," said Robert Supon.

Ray Nadaeu says there's a reason for the crowds...President-elect Barack Obama.

"I think they're scared. I think they are scared their gun rights are going to be taken away from them and they should be," said Nadaeu.

"We have to buy these before the new regime possibly gets in," said Greg Thorn, a Civil War gun collector. He stopped by the show to pick up ammunition.

But, the President-elect said earlier this year he would not ban guns if he took office.

In a statement after the Supreme Court ruled against Washington D.C.'s gun ban he said, "As President, I will uphold the constitutional rights of law-abiding gun-owners, hunters, and sportsmen. I know that what works in Chicago may not work in Cheyenne. We can work together to enact common-sense laws, like closing the gun show loophole and improving our background check system, so that guns do not fall into the hands of terrorists or criminals."

Since election day, gun shop owners say gun sales have gone through the roof.

James Black, manager of Tactical Weapons in Fort Myers tells WINK News in their five years in business, they've never seen sales like they have in the last month.

"People are afraid, people are afraid this new incoming president is going to ban everything," said Black.

The rush to buy a gun is impacting the cost of a gun.

"I would say a good 25 percent," explained Black, "It's all supply and demand. Right now, I don't have enough rifles in stock in order to sell them."

Anyone looking for ammunition is also taking a hit. Black says the cost is up 50 percent.

Even gun enthusiasts admit, they don't know for sure what will happen in five weeks, but they're buying what they can now, just in case.

Black said, "Once you can't get em you're going to have to use a stick to protect yourself."

Salute Gator,
Did you check your local gun ranges? Give them all a call because you may
get a better price and quantity. Ranges seem to have all the Ammo stock ATM.

Arizona really is very good on gun-ownership. We still have open-carry laws (for now). I’m not sure why the Wal-mart isn’t selling handguns. I asked the clerk, but he didn’t seem to know much. It could have something to do with the neighborhood, which isn’t exactly stellar.

A box of .223 here in Wasilla Alaska at the Sportsmen Warehouse is about $14 and a box of .308 $16, frankly thats pretty good though I used to get the .223 for half as much 6 years ago.

Whats gone off the shelves and appears to be in extreme short supply is most powders, primers and popular components like .308 brass, being Alaska though we do have plenty of the large caliber rounds like the .300, .338, .375.

It took me two weeks just to get some new empty brass for my .308 needs.

People should teach themselves on how to make a firearm, almost everyone I meet think its inconceivable to make a firearm.

Did that when I was 13. That was in 1953. Barrel was a 1952 Buick radio antenna. Little beauty, fired .22 long-rifle rounds.

My wife just a few minutes ago told me no moose this winter, too much work butchering it and she says my teeth can;t handle it.

I wish I had moose, real lean, makes great jerky, I have to actually add fat to it for sausage making, also an excellant stew or chili meat.

Last one I shot I was actually standing in my house and opened a window and dropped it with my .338 in the back yard, no neighbors for miles that direction with a hill so it was a safe shot, it was near zero and took me almost 6 hours to butcher it, meat lasted almost two years.

Thats the beauty of living in America, we are resourceful enough that we can just build it ourselves or rather what it would take to get a better tool...

I would love to have moose meat. Here in Virginia Beach I get fresh Rock fish
for the asking. Wana trade? Really though, Rock fish is the best fish
I've ever had from my travels across the USA.
One day I'll have a nice Moose steak when I visit Alaska.

God Bless you,
MaxMax

Things to look for in Alaska, a LOT of good smoked salmon, moose stew and halibut steaks.

I cannot legally ship moosemeat out, wish I could, way too many moose around here, om average over 300 alone are roadkill here near Wasilla.

Some people have talked about driving a beater pickup with a plow on it and deliberately running into moose crossing the road, I don’t think they actually did it but there is a program that donates the struck moose to charity around the valley here, usually moose accidents happen in the winter when its colder than a deepfreez so the meat is pretty safe.

Being a country boy from the mountains of Washington State, there's nothing wrong
with winter road kill in my book.

As long as it is fresh and hasn't been run over too many times, I agree.

Last gun show I went to (November) I wanted to pick up some 30.06 and some 00 12 gauge shot gun shells. Couldn't do either. People were buying ammunition by the case! Dealers were down to odd sizes and the standard stuff, 9mm, 45acp, etc were no where to be found.

Sounds like this is not the only show where this is happening.

You must have an interesting history.

I buy .223 and .357 at Wal-Mart because they still have the powest prices for ammo of any pplace in my area. But, I can tell you, the local one has very slim pickings.
