Sorry Cake Crumb, but Janet Reno took one lending institution to court circa 1994, forcing it to lend to the poor. It fell in line and so did the other lending institutions. They had little choice. Bush (around 2002) and other Republicans addressed this as early as the late 90s into the early 2000s. They knew about it when they had plenty of time to take action to prevent the mess we’re in now. Did the Democrat policies cause this? I think that is a given. It’s still a fact that we did not take action to end it. Newt should have known better than to allow this to continue. Here it is 2008, and the info has been out there for more than a decade, 12 years of which we had the majority in Congress, six of it with a Republican in the White House.

I saw angles, and did my research as to why "he let the segmentarian conservatives" down. It was part of a much larger picture in securing America's safety and freedoms. And Yes, I was one of those who thoroughly enjoyed his nomination of Harriet Meyers. I found her views to be so non-beltway, and so Sarah Palin.
And he brought her forward, and segmentarian conservatives knew her not, so to speak.
But you, Mr. Stock Pirate, could do with a cup of good cheer this Yuletide. You now have 4 more years to "blame Bush" for everything you think the Obama Administration has and will do wrong. Take heart!

I think he is the greatest president of my lifetime, and I’m never reluctant to say so if asked. That view drives all the liberals here completely crazy.

It never ceases to amaze me that so few one-issue conservatives ever consider that, over the past 7 years, they COULD have been complaining that President Bush let them down by allowing Islamist fascists to overrun our country, rather than having the luxury to complain about their favorite, pet-peeve issues.

Yup. Isn’t it amazing ...? I don’t know ONE family who’s lost a loved one or friend or even an acquaintance to a beheading or a roadside bomb or chemical attack here on US soil from a terrorist .... yet.
The more time passes from the panic and terror of 9/11, the more complacent and indifferent the irrational, uninformed and bitter the tunnel-visioned citizenry becomes.
God forbid, I think our comfort zone will soon end.
My point is that with enough “Socialist in Nature” things going on, pretty soon you’ve got a socialist state. If you sit down and think of the countless ways the federal government has it’s fingers in our lives, it’s honestly impossible to state that we are not in large part a socialist state today. Various government entities take a massive amount of money from working people today. And then large portions of that money is provided to others.
Our retirements (Social Security), Medicare, welfare... on and on it goes. About fifteen years ago I read an article that mentioned that in Kansas City, there were more people working for the various levels of government than in the private sector. You’ve got to admit that isn’t a good example of a free enterprise nation. It’s Socialism. Perhaps we could argue about terms, but I think we’d be kidding ourselves if we didn’t recognize it for what it is.
Is this all Bush’s fault. Hell no. Still, in his eight years he contributed to this problem considerably. And when all is said and done in light of the current economic situation, we’ll have to come to terms with what took place on his watch, or as a result of his watch. it isn’t going to be kind to him.
I’m not for going out of my way to trash Bush. It still bothers me to enter threads that canonize him, when the reality is, hes left this nation in a mess. And that prompts me to take a contrarian view.
If someone posted favorable comments about Democrats standing in all this, I’d slice and dice those comments also. However, the Democrats didn’t do all this in a vacuum, unfortunately.

Bush Called For Reform of Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac 17 Times in 2008 Alone... Dems Ignored Warnings

For many years the President and his Administration have not only warned of the systemic consequences of financial turmoil at a housing government-sponsored enterprise (GSE) but also put forward thoughtful plans to reduce the risk that either Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac would encounter such difficulties. President Bush publicly called for GSE reform 17 times in 2008 alone before Congress acted.
Unfortunately, these warnings went unheeded, as the President’s repeated attempts to reform the supervision of these entities were thwarted by the legislative maneuvering of those who emphatically denied there were problems.

Do you remember the President asking for air-time to address this matter to the U.S. Citizens? I don’t. Facing a collapse of our economic system, it would seem our President would.
And please... don’t come to me and tell me that the President made this many proposals, when up until 18 months before the stuff hit the fan, he had a majority in the House and the Senate. We held the majority in the House and Senate for twelve years. To a significant extent, this gelled on our watch.

You are so right. Bush saw a re-reun of history and so did Blair..that’s why they fought so hard and held on.

After action report:
Probably over 1,000 soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines packed the palace and stood for a couple hours (lots arrived way early to make sure they could get in).
The 4th Infantry Division had some band members there playing some great tunes and even doing vocals. Support folks had chow, snacks and beverages laid out for the crowd.
People were packed in like sardines. The backdrop for the stage was a gigantic flag that reached all the way to the ceiling, maybe about 70 feet.
General Odierno introduced the President. Started with, “Someone wanted to come see you to say goodbye, and to wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays...”
The troops were jazzed and very energetic, though this was about 2200 at the end of a, no doubt, very long day for everyone.
A great cheer went up when he took the stage. The President talked about the early decisions to go into the war, UN resolutions, the success of the Coalition. He talked about the dark days during ‘04-’05, and the ultimate success of the surge. Many compliments for the unprecedented successes of the military. The troops broke in several times with applause and “Hooahs!”.
Two things stood out. The first was when he said its sometimes hard to understand you’re making history when you’re in the middle of the action. Second, he said he was ordering everyone, as Commander In Chief, to call their families when “y’all get out of here tonight” and tell them “the Commander in Chief says ‘thank you’” for all the sacrifices made.
He spoke about the losses and injuries to friends and loved ones, and how the troops would someday be thought of in the same way as those who were in Normandy, Verdun, Korea and elsewhere.
He was very comfortable with the troops and talked about what he would miss most not being President which was not being CiC. Afterwards, he stayed for a bit and shook hands and signed autographs. This one was just for the troops - no civilians or contractors or TCNs, just our soldiers, airmen, sailors and marines. It was clearly a great morale booster.
