ALBANY - Gov. Paterson's proposed $121 billion budget hits New Yorkers in their iPods - and nickels-and-dimes them in lots of other places, too.
Trying to close a $15.4 billion budget gap, Paterson called for 88 new fees and a host of other taxes, including an "iPod tax" that taxes the sale of downloaded music and other "digitally delivered entertainment services."
"We're going to have to take some extreme measures," Paterson said Tuesday after unveiling the slash-and-burn budget.
The proposal, which needs legislative approval, did not include broad-based income tax increases, but relied on smaller ones to raise $4.1 billion from cash-strapped New Yorkers.
Movie tickets, taxi rides, soda, beer, wine, cigars and massages would be taxed under Paterson's proposal. It also extends sales taxes to cable and satellite TV services and removes the tax exemption for clothes costing less than $110.
"The governor is nickel-and-diming working class families," said Ron Deutsch, executive director of New Yorkers for Fiscal Fairness, an advocacy group.

I was referring to SNL last Saturday. I can’t imagine all the legislators have a “circus ticket” habit.
On SNL, in the Governor Paterson skit (hilarious), “circus tickets” referred to cocaine.
Yeah...now I remember...
Paterson will leagalize drugs so they can be taxed!
Too bad they don’t hand out Oscar’s for best impersonation.
That Paterson skit had me rolling.
Fred Armison was fantastic!
“Why does government never decrease?”
ya wanna hear something really funny?
Not only is the NY government going to continue to brutally punish the residents who haven’t yet run screaming from the state - but they’ve actually hired more staff to man the phones.
Why?
To handle all the complaints!
They are so imcompetent - they have to hire more people at taxpayers’ expense to listen to all the complaining!
“The donkeys are even gong after the Indians again...if they resist we may just have that general uprising...”
Why is it the libs are never racist when they pick on the indians?
Can you imagine if republicans were trying to do this?
my eyes were getting tired watching him hold onto that squint with his eyes rolled to the right.
That was a long skit to keep your eyes in that position.
I noticed that, too. Armison studied Paterson well, right down to the facial hair. That was as good as an impersonation as the Tina Fey/Sarah Palin deal.
Because the libs only pick on the Indians who hated other Indians. And Black slaves. And homosexuals.
This state is clearly on the road to hell. Higher gas taxes, tax on haircuts, obesity tax, higher fees on everything under the sun and to top it off, Paterson wants to increase welfare and make it easier to get on it and medicaid.
We now have lost the senate and are being run by all downstate politicos. I may have no choice but to move after this mess.
Texas welcomes y’all with open arms!
We sure would welcome you with open arms!
There is plenty of construction work around here, too...right NYT?
I know and you are in my thoughts!

The beginnings of internet taxation. Good Lord he's an idiot. People will go back to pirating.
I didn’t KNOW that about our indians in NY?
huh!
Learn something new everyday.
Texas is HUGE and ever growing...lots of opportunities, no state income tax, lowest gas prices, budget surplus, friendly folks, nice weather.... Shall I go on?
Of course the way that Arnie and the legislature are mismanaging the CA budget I think our bobsled to hell is just a little behind the NYer's.
I have a feeling it won't be long before I have to look for a new place to settle down. If I cash in my San Diego real estate I could probably buy a summer place in Lake Tahoe (Nevada side) and a winter place in Arizona (can't take humidity). Texas would be OK if I could find a low humidity area.
You should go to work for the PR department for the state! LOL!
Yep...has all that and more! Lovely shoreline....mountains....forests....great cities....LOTS of conservatives! :D
No Hillary OR Paterson!
