Barack Obama’s choice of a prominent evangelical minister to perform the invocation at his inauguration is a conciliatory gesture toward social conservatives who opposed him in November, but it is drawing fierce challenges from a gay rights movement that – in the wake of a gay marriage ban in California – is looking for a fight.
Rick Warren, the senior pastor of Saddleback Church in southern California, opposes abortion rights but has taken more liberal stances on the government role in fighting poverty, and backed away from other evangelicals’ staunch support for economic conservatism. But it’s his support for the California constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage that drew the most heated criticism from Democrats Wednesday.
“Your invitation to Reverend Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at your inauguration is a genuine blow to LGBT Americans,” the president of Human Rights Campaign, Joe Solomonese, wrote Obama Wednesday. “[W]e feel a deep level of disrespect when one of architects and promoters of an anti-gay agenda is given the prominence and the pulpit of your historic nomination.”
The rapid, angry reaction from a range of gay activists comes as the gay rights movement looks for an opportunity to flex its political muscle. Last summer gay groups complained, but were rebuffed by Obama, when an “ex-gay” singer led Obama’s rallies in South Carolina. And many were shocked last month when voters approved the California ban.

This is BS, big time. Warren had a pro-life right to turn down the biggest threat to the unborn ever conceived. Did the man actually agree to do this? NO conservative could even entertain the thought of supporting this man even to hand him a tissue, unless he was crying out in repentance for the deaths of the little ones he agrees to murder. THis is a con, Christians—a con. He’s saying here’s the apple—doesn’t Warren know the heart of Satan when he sees it?

Yeah, I smell something of a set up. On the one hand Obama chooses to be officiated thus, on the other he stealthily funds for a huge protest against it... all a matter of conjecturing and further the shaming of us vs. gays and of slowly accustomizing the culture in favor of those poor gays.
Meanings and words are being manufactured right there to condemn Jews and Christians, while leaving belief or good tradition without real defense, naked.

He might be self destructive. He is for sure the consumate social wheeler, using any social mean, christian or antichristian, to make personal contacts and fraternizations with those who know him best. It helps him wink, nod and and select. He makes these gestures that are never promises, stances that are never real stances, contradictions andbizantine flip flops.
In the end, the irony is that those openly outraged gays are at least believing in something. Obama seems to believe in nothing and to always fight or frustrate any seed of belief what so ever out there, whether Christian or not.

Obama shouldn’t have bothered trying to appease conservative evangelicals. It won’t work for the same reason compassionate conservatism (ie: liberal appeasement) didn’t work. Meanwhile, he’s pissed off a valuable constituency. I’m sure he has the same thought Jorge had, “where else are they gonna go?” but they might stay home next election. See where that got the Republican party?
