Sometimes you eat the cat; sometimes the cat eats you!

BEIJING - A southern Chinese province must stop the "shameful" and "cruel slaughter" of cats for food, a group of more than 40 animal lovers in Beijing said Thursday as they unfurled banners in a tearful protest.

Thousands of cats across the country have been caught in the past week by traders and transported to Guangdong province to be killed for food, said the protesters gathered at the Guangdong government's office in Beijing.
"We are very angry because the cats are being skinned and then cooked alive. We must make them correct this uncivilized behavior," said Wang Hongyao, who represented the group in submitting a letter to the Guangdong office.
The protesters urged the provincial government to crack down on cat traders and restaurants that serve cat meat, although no law says it is illegal to eat cats. It has long been common for cats and dogs to be eaten in some parts of China and in some other Asian countries.

Perhaps in China it is hunger motivating this, but I'm not convinced, given my experience last year of visiting a very small village in Viet Nam, not too far from the Chinese border.
I may have the order backwards, but the gist was that one eats cat one time in the first half of the lunar month for luck, and eats dog once in the 2nd half of the lunar month for luck. These villagers were not starving, their water buffalo were healthy looking, as were the crops in their fields.

Lynx is a delicacy to the Indians in Alaska. They even have a happy potlatch song; called Lynx Up A Tree. There are still plenty of rural whites who eat dogs along the Yukon River. Who am I to tell them what to eat & why not????

Cantonese will eat anything with DNA. And they really don’t like northern Chinese telling them what to do.
1. A lobster is basically an underwater spider. I doubt it can feel pain the way a mammal can.
2. One can always kill the lobster prior to cooking. An ice pick to the back of the head is all it takes.

You have it backwards. Eating cats is conspicuous consumption. The reason for this is cat meat (dog as well) is more expensive than the regular staples of chicken, pork, and beef. No Chinese restaurants will serve you cat unless you request it. Why would they if the substitute costs more than the normal ingredient? On the contrary, you have to watch out for those restaurants serving Cat meat to actually serve what you request, they could just be using chicken and calling it cat so they can charge you more.
I think you either misunderstood my post or meant the reply for someone else. There were no restaurants involved in my discussion at all. These were remote villagers beliefs and what they did for themselves. Eating cat and dog for them is a tradition that relates to having good luck in the coming month.
No skinning involved there... and not much of a central nervous system, either.
