MRSA (drug resistant staph infection) cases in an East Tennessee high school
WVLT TV Channel 8 ^ | December 18, 2008 | Heather Haley

An East Tennessee High School is dealing with two confirmed cases of the drug resistant Staph infection known as MRSA.

The school is still open but some family members still have their concerns.

The cases of MRSA are considered isolated and no students are considered at risk.

Both confirmed cases are of teachers but school officials are still taking extra precaution to try and protect students from getting MRSA.

Jessica Sharp is one of many concerned family members in Union County, after hearing word of MRSA cases at Union County High School.

"It’s not just only the students that would be getting it, it's their families and everything," she said.

Schools, particularly high schools, are breeding grounds for this disease.

Both teachers. One male and one female?

Hmmmmm. A little ‘after school panty polo’?

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

This is my neck of the woods.

My best friend’s son got a staph infection on his knee after a soccer injury. She literally fumigated her whole house in Lysol and did a Monk type cleaning for weeks. I called the Mom in the plastic bubble because she was so vigilent in fighting it, but thank God she did.

No reason to think that.

MRSA is ubiquitous. Keeping it under control is a matter of knowing where it colonizes. Most often, it’s in the creases of the hands, and in the nares. That would indicate that picking your nose can spread it.

Unless you are convinced by some negative personal experience that MRSA is an STD, I wouldn’t fantasize about the teachers too much.

Washing hands is important & when I had it I was careful to use just my bathroom & toss away plates & forks etc. With my last case that doctor d-mn near killed me giving the drugs Rifamprin & Bactrim. Even though I warned her of my hep C she gave me them anyway. I ended up in the ER with a very bad drug reaction. Now I make sure my regular doctor checks every drug I take. I know I got my MRSA from the hospital when I got my liver biopsy & then from a bug bite.

MRSA is EVERYWHERE, and it isn’t going away.

I should have put the sarc sign out. I had MSRA infection after heart surgery. Not fun at all.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

There are many people who have this strain of Staph colonized on and in their bodies, yet don't get infected (EVERYONE has Staph all over their skin; it's normal flora). Most MRSA infections are of the skin (although it can happen in other body sites). If there is a break in the skin, then there is potential for infection; it's as simple as that. So I would suggest that rather than homeschooling, all one has to do is wash out any open wounds with soap and water, and monitor for infection.

MSRA is bad stuff.

My sister had it and a co-worker is recovering from it. Both were hospitilized and various antibotics were used, and even then it was resistant. Both were simular cases where they were pumped up with so much antibotics to where the organs start to fail.
They were lucky, as I had a friend die within 24 hours of getting diagnosed.

I would put the Staff Rest Room {no pun intended} as being the suspected place of transfer. To be safe they do need to cancel gym classes etc and suspend use of locker room showers etc till at least after Christmas break. This county is in my stomping grounds. I can literally walk to Union County in about 30 minutes time. It’s a small rural county population wise with one high school serving the entire county. They better check the doctors offices and nursing home also as well as the Health Department all right up the road from the school.

“You have my sympathy, my apology, and my amazement on your recovery.”

It was in 2001 and it crept into my leg where they harvested a vein. I had it and the Dr. wanted me in the hosp. for massive anti-biotic. Instead I went to Laughlin, NV for some gambling. He phoned in a high power anti-biotic and that, fortuanately, did the trick. He never told me the name but it came out later. Didn’t mean a thing to me then. No wonder he and the hospital infection expert were so concerned.
