Mom Denied Cell Phone - For Being a Mom (w/Poll)
Parent Dish ^ | December, 18, 2008 | Roger Sinasohn

Butcher, baker, candlestick maker -- all noble professions, indeed. Stay-at-home Mom? Well, get a real job. At least, that's what one Australian mom was told when she went to buy a cell phone. Lyndal Fair, a thirty-six-year-old mother of three, wanted to purchase a mobile phone, presumably to keep track of her brood, to call their schools and doctors and to be available in an emergency. Not good enough, said Vodafone -- they don't sell phones to moms.

In fact, the store employees suggested she get her husband to purchase the phone under his name for her. Sound familiar? "I couldn't believe it. It was like being back in the '50s," said Mrs. Fair. "Being a mum is a full-time job and it's a very hard job - the hardest job you can have - because if you get it wrong, the ramifications for everyone are enormous," she added.

A Vodafone spokesman confirmed that the policy does not belong to just one rogue store but to the company as a whole, adding that getting a man to purchase the phone was the easiest solution. The policy is not meant to target moms alone, but anyone the company feels may not be able to afford a phone. "It's not an ideal situation. We're trying to fix it," said Greg Spears, the company spokesman.

I would definitely say this is something the company ought to address. If you ask me, however, the quickest solution is not to have a man buy the phone but to just put down something like "Moms against Vodafone" as the company name.

POLL

Should motherhood count as a job?

No - They drop the kids off at school and goof off the rest of the day

If you don't get paid, it's not a job

It's the company's right to decide who they want to do business with

It shouldn't matter how you make a living, just whether or not you can afford the phone

Motherhood is more work than any other job -- and more important too!

In addition to all the tasks mentioned, I make all the family's appointments and see that everyone gets to them.
I research vendors for any repairs, upgrades, maintenance to our home, them make sure they do the job and get paid.
A good wife is like a CEO. We run the business of our family. Many times I've said, “I need a wife” All of my female friends know just what I mean.
Hubby makes good money. I make sure it goes as far as it can. We make a good team.
When you shop for life insurance the agent always tells you to insure your stay at home mom wife. If she gets hit by a bus, you'll need lots of money to pay someone to do everything that she did.

If I’m married to her and I “kick her out on the street” I’m still liable for the bill. Any charges she runs up on credit cards etc is the same.

Only legal separation changes that.

Try again.

In any of the United States (doesn’t matter if we’re talking community property or common law) one member of a marital relationship has the right to contract on behalf of the couple under most circumstances. I presume the laws are different down under?

Actually, it would be in your wife's best interest to establish her own credit, in her own name in the event (God forbid) that something happened to you. The time to establish credit is when things are stable, not in a time of uproar.

Just 2 cents of advice......carry on with the interesting flamewar with HG

“My wife didn’t work for years yet had stellar credit and had her choice of credit cards. She had double my limits. Yep, I paid the monthly bill. Seemed weird to me.”

“Hey, we got a woman here with no job but her husband pays the bills every month without question. How much credit do we want to extend to her?”

“All of it!”

I would only do business with a ‘trump-like’ person if they had recognizable assests (beyond those on her person) that could be liquidated to pay the bill. No income, no assests? Hit the road, I wouldn’t have given this person a phone either, not because she is a mom, but because she was not (presumably) able to show ability to repay.

You sir, are an idiot.

Because I'm not in favor of extending credit to the unemployed?

Right. Brilliant.

No matter how well the little unemployable chippy conducts
herself in the dark, the fact remains that she has no job
other than concubine. Which I doubt requires much skill.

I am zeroing in on the fact that the story never mentions her complete status other than (presumed) housewife. There are housewives and there are breeders. I assume the lack of detail in the story serves a useful (moonbat) purpose. Like, how many sperm donors are involved?

When you assume you make an ass out of you and you.

FWIW, She is married. One Husband. Makes a good living as an industrial electrician (Details of which they knew). He is frequently away from home, and she has full control of the family finances.

Everything was going hunky-dory until they asked "what is your work phone number?"

"Haven't got one? Well, the computer needs one to approve your contract, It won't let me write out the contract otherwise."

Absolutely.

I second that motion! If he cannot understand the difference between a wife and a paid escort he is rather sad as well.

Being a mom without a paying job doesn't mean that they have no assets or ability to pay. In addition there was no mention of her credit rating being an issue. It was all because she didn't have a “job”. The other details matter greatly in terms of really being able to pay or not.

I suppose they don't sell phones to people who are retired?

It is just plain dumb to entirely base one’s ability to pay on whether they alone have a job or not.

Exactly. When I wasn’t working (or it was under the table), my husband had to sign for any account, be it cell phone, new credit card, etc. Makes sense to me. I didn’t have an income (that the IRS knew about) but I had my own credit, credit cards, etc. from before I was married.

I signed all the checks/paid all our bills but I couldn’t change the accounts on anything or open new ones unless he signed also. It makes sense to me.

I am gonna guess that either you are a bitter divorced guy, or will be as soon as your wife finds out you consider her nothing but a whore.

Whereupon, you'll discover that half of what you consider yours alone belongs to her by law.
