City codes slay Snowzilla Giant snowman deemed a public nuisance, safety hazard By ELIZABETH BLUEMINK ebluemink@adn.com
Anchorage's famous giant snow man, Snowzilla, finally met its match. It wasn't the weather. It wasn't angry neighbors bearing shovels and pick axes.
It turns out Snowzilla's biggest foe -- the one who felled the controversial but much-loved giant -- was a notice-bearing city code enforcement officer.
That's right, Snowzilla was abated.
It was just a few years ago that 16-foot-tall Snowzilla arose in a residential yard in Airport Heights, launching an annual procession of local gawkers and an international media blitz. Camera crews came from Russia and Japan. So, city officials have deemed Snowzilla a public nuisance and safety hazard.

The city also asked council members to watch out for continued construction and to consider weighing in on Snowzilla at an upcoming meeting, council members said.
At last Thursday's community council meeting, no one offered a Snowzilla-related motion. "We're not really a policing agency," said Becky Kurtz, the council president.
Now, Snowzilla is just a big pile of snow rubble.
Powers said he doesn't plan to rebuild.
He can't. Under the city's nuisance abatement order, if he tries, he could get arrested.

As if the city didn't have more important things to worry about.
Kneel before Snow Zod
Wait- wait. Lemme get this straight. Some resident has been told he can’t build a SNOWMAN in his own yard? What the hell am I missing here?
Are you kidding me?
City codes gone wild.
Bureaucrats who have nothing else to do, but for justifying their relatively generous pay/benefits packages.
Ah yes. City codes. The soft face of oppression in akmerica. courtesy of your local Little Hitlers.
“What the hell am I missing here?”
Probably all the liberals who have moved there,I was stationed there from 1968-1970 and nothing like this would have happened then....You gotta love/hate the liberal mentality....I did not say Liberals, just their mentality, just wanted to clarify my opinion for all the trolls.
This snowman is only the first thing to be legislated out of existence. Next all the lighted Christmas displays.
All it takes is one Scrooge who complains about the increase in traffic on their street for 2 weeks a year and boom, the city will exercise their muscle to make sure everybody’s Christmas season is ruined.
Thank you Scrooges, everywhere! You asshats!
This is crazy!
I bet ya won’t be able to build snow forts and igloos pretty soon without an inspector certifying them safe first. It is madness.
“But Snowzilla attracted a lot of naysayers too. Not everybody in the neighborhood liked all the cars and visitors.”
In all fairness, I can sympathize a bit here. These sorts of attractions can get out of hand rather quickly. Years ago (late 1970s), a family in my neighborhood did a massive Christmas display that drew people from miles around. It was really neat, but getting in and out of one’s own driveway during peak hours was darn near impossible. Less courteous visitors also had a tendency to cut through people’s yards and/or show up at all hours of the evening full of, shall we say, “Christmas cheer” (of the 80-proof variety.)
Still, in that case the neighbors spoke with the family running the show and eventually worked out a compromise. The local authorities didn’t take it upon themselves to issue some inane decree about code violations.
With apologies to Buck Dharma and the BOC.
BTW, I’m not discounting the possibility that the “inconvenience factor” of Snowzilla was minimal and it was either A) a bored councilman and/or B) the local neighborhood Scrooge that is behind this.
Just pointing out there are cases where things can get out of hand.
I already had that going through my head when I opened the thread. Now, it’s stuck there.
Now, I’ve got it going on iTunes.
Loud.
These morons should be hounded out of office for wasting the taxpayer’s money like this.
Imbiciles.
Be sure to wear a purposeful grimace while you do so! :-)
It will wear well with the terrible sounds that I seem to have an aptitude for making.
