Man Shoots Armed Robber In Oak Park

(OAK PARK, Ill.) Police are searching for a man who shot an armed robber after the man refused to give up his leather coat Sunday night at an Oak Park gas station.

The shooting happened about 11 p.m. at a gas station at North and Hayes avenues, in the northeast corner of Oak Park, according to Village of Oak Park Communications Director David Powers.

A man was putting gas in his car when he was approached by two other men who demanded his leather coat. The man in the coat refused, took out a handgun and shot one of the attempted robbers once in the mouth and once in his side before fleeing the scene, Powers said.

The injured man was taken to West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park for treatment of his gunshot wounds but was later transferred to John H. Stroger Hospital of Cook County. He had apparently lost several teeth and suffered injury to his tongue, Powers said. It was believed that his injuries were not life-threatening.

Police recovered a handgun from the scene but were unclear Monday morning whether the gun matched the one used in the shooting.

Two other men, believed to have been associated with the would-be robbers, were sitting in a nearby car during the shooting.

All four men were being questioned by police, Powers said.

No one has been charged in shooting as of Monday afternoon.

This robbery victim most likely thought about the fate of the New York subway victim Bernie Goetz.

Some good movies to rent this weekend:

"Death Wish" "Man on Fire" "The Brave One" "Death Sentence" "Eye for an Eye" "Munich"

What did he use, an Air-soft gun?

Wow. Chicago. This HAS to hit “close to home” for our president-elect.

Do you think maybe “Lawyer” Obama will take time out from his busy schedule ruining our country and the rest of the world to PERSONALLY prosecute this guy for defending himself?

Hope his license plate was not caught on the gas stations video, but that is why they have them.

Typical police. Chase after the victim and let the robbers go.

If he is smart, he will go home and dispose of the handgun after applying a file to the barrel and breech.

And then he will never say a thing to anyone about it.

And i’m sure the city of Oak Park will profusely apologize to the robber, and some court will kick in a huge settlement for his trouble.

Brothers draw probation in attack on Marine Tuesday, December 23, 2008 | 8:53 AM

MARKHAM, Ill. -- Two brothers who reportedly tore off part of an off-duty Marine's ear in an attack outside an Oak Forest tavern have pleaded guilty to battery charges and have been sentenced to probation.

Police say Joshua and Jason Haack attacked Midlothian Marine Kevin Heath while he was on leave on April 5, battering his head, breaking his nose in five places and ripping off part of his right ear.

Twenty-two-year-old Joshua Haack of Oak Forest pleaded guilty to felony aggravated battery, and was sentenced to two years probation Monday.

Twenty-nine-year-old Jason Haack of Chicago Ridge pleaded guilty to misdemeanor battery and was sentenced to one year of conditional discharge.

Heath, who was in court in full uniform, said he needed surgery to reattach his ear but has made a full recovery.

I could imagine what would have happened to this Marine if he would have defended himself with deadly force. He would be sitting in Cook County, IL Jail as we speak. It reminds me of the movie "Con Air"

"Cameron Poe, an honorably discharged United States Army Ranger, is found guilty of manslaughter for killing a drunken man in a bar brawl while trying to defend his pregnant wife Tricia and sentenced to seven to ten years."

I guess this is kind of a silly question to ask, but I sorta have to because the news story really didn't make it clear: Were the attempted robbers and their accomplices arrested and charged with a crime?

Just asking, because I assumed that armed robbery was, you know, still a "crime" in the Chicagoland area.

Doh! Didn’t think of that... You’re probably right. I was thinking a frontal shot, but maybe the bad guy tried to turn away at the last second.

If you’re in Chicago with a defensive handgun, you probably go with the very smallest firearm you can get, such as a .32 caliber Beretta Tomcat.

It is, and it’s Nicholas Cage, not Kevin Heath.

Just curious, but why in Chicago do you go w/a .32? You can get very good compact 9mm, or even .45 that would provide much better “personal protection”. A .32 against even a thick leather coat won’t do much...except maybe get you dead instead of the attacker.

Thanks Muddy.

Some people just don’t get it I guess.

Duh.

I was only depicting a movie actor “ Nick Cage’s character, not the actual mugging victim, the Marine Kevin Heath.

Dollars to donuts it was one of these. They're very popular. Much cheaper than a brand name, and just as reliable.

I would expect that the single most overriding concern, in Chicago, is avoiding detection of your defensive firearm. A Sig P239, a compact 9mm, is 6.6”, the Kahr PM9 is 5.3”, while the Tomcat is 4.9”.

Also bear in mind that you’d have to obtain both the firearm and ammunition through “off-the-books” means, so the selection of firearm for unlicensed defensive carry in Chicago would be fairly limited.

The pistol in this case was successful in stopping the attack and allowing the victim to get away, and in the end, that’s what really matters.
