How come ‘bad boys’ get to have a gene, but not homosexuals?

Homosexuals pulling down jeans? I guess that will not end well!

“The idea is that your genes predispose you to certain behaviors, and those behaviors elicit different kinds of social reactions from others,” said Ms. Burt.

Sounds like Ms Burt needs a good scrogging

Girls are hardwired to be ATTRACTED to the “bad boys”.

In this specific trait, nice guys finish last.

Nelson beats up Milhouse.

While Lisa looks on, torn by her loyalties and her basic impulses.

This is typically the kind of science that makes for excellent bar room discussions and nowt else. If bad behaviour (which should be specified at any rate) has a cause, that cause is an extremely complex combination of genetic dispositions and life experiences. I would rate the number of genes involved at a few dozens, and you may add to that numerous serious life events before maturity too (like: divorce of parents, (sexual) abuse, substance abuse in the family, and others).

Yes, I am a nerd. With good reason. I know of these things because of my occupation.

Example: why do bad boys lie? For instance, because they grew up with an abusive and addicted father. That’s an excellent recipe for becoming a habitual liar: in order to minimize personal damage, these kids tend to change their statements and reports time and time again to please that dad and soften his blows: they learn early on that lying brings rewards, self-preservating rewards.

In my example, the boy has not yet become an addict himself (although he may be genetically ‘doomed’ so to speak), but life events forced him to evade the truth.

Then, when growing up, he may encounter job difficulties precisely he’s not on good terms with the truth and always tells things that please people, even if these are blatant lies.

He loses his job. And then a number of binge drinking sessions is enough to convice him that alcohol may be a panacea to all his problems.

End of story. A sad and complex end.

“nice guys finish last”

In some ways, yes; but nice guys last longer.

Oh no, not the bad boy theory again.
Back in the day, bad boys, slicked their hair back, smoked cigs and brazened a tattoo or 2.
Now, they are gang bangers that rape, pillage and murder.
I'm liking the 'geek' boys now.

Was it just me, or did this article utterly collapse when they decided to cite John Tesh as an expert? I’m talking instant FAIL.

Men who had a gene associated with "rule-breaking behavior" were rated most popular by a group of previously unacquainted peers, she found.

That's all very well, but what about people who'd been around them long enough to know they're self-absorbed, irresponsible assh*les? Anyone who's around groups of children knows that self-confident, attention-seeking behavior results in popularity, for a while. The popularity doesn't last unless the person has good qualities otherwise.

That is true, but there are also the girls that will stick with the loser even if they are incarcerated when their risks didn’t pay off and habitually don’t pay off ie. a life of crime.
