Well, yes, generally it is cheap to make, compared to the feedstocks for more modern plastics and composite materials.

This past summer, before the economic turmoil started in earnest, I was seeing prices of about $0.80/lb FOB China for the stuff.

Before fertilizer prices shot up here in the last two years, it was cheaper than that.

Nooooo!

First, I’m a female. Second, my son wasn’t homeschooled and is a young adult (yeah, living at home, but a young adult, nonetheless), and third, ‘Skywalk’ is his Freeper handle. He was a member long before I was.

Just because they say it’s cod, doesn’t mean it’s cod.

Huh???

If it’s that difficult for you to understand, I probably shouldn’t bother trying to explain it. ; )

Quite an intelligent non-answer!

My grandfather was a fish exporter on the north coast of Jutland, Denmark, that was taken over by my fathers younger brother, where I spent my summer vacations as a boy!!

My father was a fish exporter at one of Europe's largest fishing port Esbjerg, major landing place for cod fish. My oldest brother had a fish shop in Viborg. Two of my brothers were commercial fishermen, the oldest winding up as a shrimp boat owner/captain out of Tampa. In my home we eat fish 5-6 days a week, often cod and flounder from the North Sea. I do a lot of cooking myself preferably fish, so I do think I can distinguish very clearly if it is COD!!!

I’m sorry if you took my cynical attempt at humor regarding Chinese imports as a personal criticism of your abilities to distinguish cod from other fish. It really isn’t in my nature to deliberately offend. Perhaps I should have explained after all. : )

The remark was aimed at the trustworthiness of those who would deliberately use melamine, or anything harmful, in a product that is a food source for their own people, much less in a product being exported to other people. My thought was - if they can’t be trusted with the production and processing methods of a product, why would they adhere to a trustworthy standard of the product itself being what was represented?

I was remembering jokes about Chinese restaurants...”just because they say it’s chicken, doesn’t mean it’s chicken”...thus, I said, “Just because they say it’s cod, doesn’t mean it’s cod.”

I apologize for the misunderstanding. : )

Thank you, I appreciate that!

My point was, that I could NOT picture cod fish to be farmed in China!!

However, the frozen Cod Fillet sold at Wal-Mart, - and I like them - are a product out of China, how and where, I don't know!!!

The not knowing is what gives me pause about consuming products from China.

I “Googled” dangers and warnings about imported products from China, and the stories, over the years, about such products ranging from food products, to medicines, to toys, etc., is mindboggling.

I wonder exactly what has been done to remedy the problem. It seems almost impossible to resolve a problem where one horrible infraction after another pops up persistently in such wide ranging types of products.

It’s difficult to have much confidence that the quality of any product, that has had the problem rectified temporarily, will have that quality maintained when there doesn’t appear to be strict guidelines and standards of quality and safety of the products in the first place.

There is a difference between simply producing inferior products, and producing dangerous ones, imo. Under some circumstances, the product may appear to be fine, and then we learn some tragedy involved with the consuming of it - whether with pets or with humans. I’m not willing to risk it, if I’m aware of what I’m buying, and in most instances (depending on the type of product) I won’t buy a product that doesn’t provide that information.
