COVINA, Calif. – Law enforcement officials in Southern California say the gunman who killed nine people in a Christmas Eve bloodbath at his ex-in-laws' Covina home intended to flee to Canada but was severely burned before he killed himself.

Police said Friday that after the shooting, 45-year-old Bruce Jeffrey Pardo used a homemade device to spray racing fuel around the home and that the vapor was ignited by a pilot light or candle. He suffered third-degree burns on both arms when it exploded.

Authorities say Pardo's Santa suit actually melted onto his body before he fled.

After Pardo shot himself to death at his brother's home, authorities found $17,000 on him and a plane ticket for a flight from Los Angeles to Canada.

I understand he just had a very unfavorable divorce resolution. Had the same thing happen here in Randogville; a guy slashed his ex, who died, and shot the divorce judge, who lived. The town was really torn up about the whole thing, thought he got it all bass-ackwards.

Good thing he shot himself.

Causing that much pollution, global warming, and damage to the Earth would net him a lot of jail time in Kalifornia.

I have to agree with that sentiment

A local nutbag hereabouts got served divorce papers the day before Christmas eve, then shows up at his wife’s workplace on Christmas eve and kills her and then himself. There’s nothing quite like the holidays for unfettered violence and mayhem.

The guy apparently went completely ‘round the bend after a divorce court awarded nearly every penny he had, which wasn’t much, to his ex. He was an unemployed electrical engineer, out of a job since July.

But he shot a small girl in the face, who answered the door and let “Santa” in, then went on a rampage, ending in torching the whole place, killing nine people on Christmas Eve, at a party. I just can’t wrap my mind around it.

He got what he deserved in the end, I guess. I just don’t know. I suspect we’re going to be seeing a lot of this sort of thing going forward, and it sickens me.

Anybody know if his brother is the comedian Jimmy Pardo? I did a little poking around but didn't find any connections. There is some similarity to their appearances based on photos, but that could just be coincidence.

I hope there's no relation. Jimmy Pardo is usually pretty funny and I would hate for his career to take a hit because a family member or relative came unstuck.

An article said his brother’s name is Brad.

An ugly tragedy in which nobody wins and nobody is any the wiser.

We read this and think “what a moron!” and at some level we’d be right. But something or somebody made his upstairs do the bolt, and they tell me that an acrimonious divorce can often do that — particularly if the outcome is unfair.

Was he mentally ill? Probably. If so that diminishes his responsibility to just about nil.

That being true, then who is to blame? At this point it doesn’t matter.

Tragic.

Thanks. The early articles I had read didn't state the brother's name, so I thought maybe they were keeping it quiet. I didn't go to the link on this one since I hadn't found anything previously.

I still feel bad for the brother and any other family he left behind. They are likely in for a rough time.

No, it does not.

Yes, it does.

Tragic. - Truly so.

In light of the horrible events that followed, just how ‘unfavorable’ was that divorce settlement?

Not that I wish this on anyone, but couldn’t he have just killed the lawyer?

Yes, it does. Medicine says so, the law says so, and commonsense says so.

I don’t care that he got screwed by the courts, when he shot an eight year old girl in the face he lost all rights to my sympathy.
I hope when that Santa suit caught fire and melted to him it gave him a taste of what to expect after he pulled the trigger on himself.

Sounds like a project the Coen Brothers would be interested in.

With them type burns he must have suffered terribly.

Lousy creep and of course all the neighbors say how great he was. I don't for minute think they are lying either, you just can't tell who will blow up and who will bear down and become stronger after a rotten deal.
