Faith-Based Hospitals Could Close If Obama Signs Freedom of Choice Act
CNSNews ^ | Dec. 1, 2008 | Penny Starr

(CNSNews.com) – Now that Barack Obama has been elected president, pro-life and pro-abortion groups are waiting to see if he will keep his campaign promise to sign the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) into law and if faith-based hospitals and health care facilities will be forced to perform abortions or risk losing federal funding – a loss that could result in some health care providers closing their doors.

“Well, the first thing I’d do as president is sign the Freedom of Choice Act,” Obama said at a July 17, 2007 meeting of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. “That’s the first thing I’d do.”

The legislation, which would legalize abortion-on-demand in all 50 states and U.S. territories, says that “this act applies to every Federal, State and local statute, ordinance, regulations, administrative order, decision, policy, practice, or other action enacted, adopted or implemented before, on, or after the date of enactment of this act.”

And it prohibits interference with reproductive health services, including abortion and "in the regulation or provision of benefits, facilities, services and information."

Denise Burke, vice president and legal director for Americans United for Life, told CNSNews.com that FOCA would tie the hands of faith-based hospitals and other pro-life health care providers.

The pro-abort crowd has wanted to wipe out pro-life laws across the country. Its really about the money, not about about "choice" for women.

You know, that was a bit melodramatic, however, it's an excellent line.

This will never pass, the Blue Dogs won't vote for it.

Even if they do, it'll get challenged all the way to the Supreme Court.

If it does passes, it'll be the equivalent of the first shots fired at Fort Sumter.

Exactly. Not only that, but he might be a bit preoccupied when/as/if he actually assumes the mantle of presidency. There appears to be much in store for him already.

Campaign promises are meant to be broken. But Obama will have to find a way to placate the moonbats. I bet he'll do it by reversing the Bush Administration's pro-life policy and he can say I kept my promise and congressional Democrats can shelve FOCA. It was always a bargaining chip.

Not so melodramatic as all that, really. One way to keep the hospital open without providing abortion services would be to shut down ALL ob/gyn services at that hospital. Obviously FOCA can't force cardiologists to provide abortion services.

You're right, unless Obama and the Left are stopped. If not, it will only take another generation or two before the sheeple will be licking the boots of their masters, but it will happen. As we Constitutional traditionalists die off or are otherwised silenced, the ignorant masses will know no better, and will acquiesce to the totalitarian state. Our generation is just beginning the fight against it. It will take subsequent generations to complete the revolution.

It is incumbent upon us to teach our children and grandchildren the truths about our history, our founders, and the sacrifices that have been made for this great and wonderful nation, so they can carry on the fight for her. Otherwise, it dies with us.

Great nations rise and fall. The people go from bondage to spiritual truth, to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependence, from dependence back again to bondage.

The cycle is well underway... if we don't fight hard now, we'll have lost our country for generations to come. My worry is that our side won't reach the critical mass necessary to turn it around in time.

Don’t be so sure that FOCA (or the 0 administration, or a court) won’t force hospitals to HAVE an OB/GYN department, so they can be forced to do abortions.

Passage of the Freedom of Choice Act would be a disaster for Obama. Imagine the controversy when Federal Marshals come to arrest Catholic Bishops and clergy who refuse to allow abortions in Catholic hospitals and their trial in federal court?

According to Catholic Heath Care of the United States, as of January 2008, 614 Catholic hospitals were operating in the United States.

A couple of interesting comments were left at the published article:
http://cnsnews.com/public/Content/Article.aspx?rsrcid=40006.

Eleazar at 01:10 PM - December 01, 2008

The best way to have stopped FOCA was to stop Obama’s election. Catholic prelates, most notably Cardinal George, had an opportunity to do that, but the silence was deafening. Most said not one word and those who spoke up about the dangers of electing Obama were held up to scorn. They now have zero credibility to publicly fret about the impact of FOCA on Catholic hospitals. Notwithstanding Bill Donohue’s comments, I don’t expect to see the bishops closing hospitals. They have been compromising Catholic doctrine for so long in order to gain the approval of the media and politicians, or money from federal coffers, that they will most assuredly find some way to compromise to keep their hospitals open in the face of FOCA.

and this one...

The best way to keep PRIVATE institutions from closing is to NOT take government money to begin with. There are very few organization that aren’t feeding at the government trough. When you take government money (well actually money they have forcibly taken from me to give to you) then you have to follow their rules. Don’t want to be forced to play by their rules? Don’t take their money. Ask Hillsdale College, they show us how well that works.

Shots at Sumter - please. This country will die in the night silently and without fanfare. There will be no service just a new name and new management. Patriots will be the trouble makers and exterminated at the will of the new Homeland Security Force.

Really? When did the Catholic Church take such a strong stand on abortion? Most prominent politicians are Catholic and I have not heard that Ted Kennedy has been kicked out of the church. Or anyone else for that matter. Many Catholics voted for the 0. Is that ok? Did the Bishops take a stand there?

Just campaign Obama blather/ OR — maybe the 111th will take it up upon its return (descent?) into DC... not that it’s within congressional purview, as it relates to the Constitution. But then, when has that stopped them?
