Two centuries on, a salute to Charles Darwin: Hero for our age
The Daily Mail ^ | Decemberf 27, 2008 | Desmond Morris

As the world faces an uncertain future, Britain's leading anthropologist toasts Darwin, born 200 years ago, for identifying adaptability as man's greatest asset

Charles Darwin

Charles Darwin: His observations undermined the traditionally held view of 'stability of species'

There is a strange object sitting on my desk as I write. It is a shiny sphere of fossilised, primeval slime. Known technically as stromatolites, this blue-green slime was the original ooze from which all life on this planet evolved.

This painfully slow process began about 3,000 million years ago and has led, ultimately, to us, the extraordinary human species.

Whenever my gaze happens to fall upon my lump of fossilised slime I experience a strange sensation, a deep respect, for I am looking at my most ancient ancestor.

Yours, too, unless you still believe in the tale of Adam and Eve and a talking serpent in the Garden of Eden.

In a few weeks, on February 12 to be exact, the scientific world will be celebrating the bicentenary of the birth of Charles Darwin, the man whose theory of the gradual evolution of living things has changed the way in which most of us see the world in which we live.

Thanks to him, we see ourselves as part of nature, instead of separate from it and superior to it.

Call yourself a tree and you become a tree. Or, think of yourself as a tree and you will be stumping for evolution.

Would you like to respond to the point? The point being that the known fossil record is incompatible with Darwin’s theory?

You must be dense. You insult my intelligence then invite me to play in your sandbox by your rules. What a Maroon! Nowhere have I said Darwin got it all right. I admire the brilliance of his theory based as it was upon observation without the genetic science we have today.

I certainly would not step into your sty to give you ease to spread your smelly manure. It never seems to occur to fanatics like you that the final answers are not in, that you do not have all the pieces of a very complex puzzle, and that your ilk miss too many worthy points because of your condescending zeal to stomp someone for not following along as you lead into the abyss.

Go insult someone else for your ego trip, doofus.

It is impossible to live in New Zealand or Australia and seriously believe in the Genesis account literally and in isolation.

Well like Alexander John Dowie and Ken Ham, America beckons.

It's classic Darwinism, with both artificial and natural selection.

But for shear brilliance, I mean, give credit where credit is due!

Ya, this is really good science:

"There is not the least inherent improbability, as it seems to me, in virtuous tendencies being more or less strongly inherited; for, not to mention the various dispositions and habits transmitted by many of our domestic animals to their offspring, I have heard of authentic cases in which a desire to steal and a tendency to lie appeared to run in families of the upper ranks; and as stealing is a rare crime in the wealthy classes, we can hardly account by accidental coincidence for the tendency occurring in two or three members of the same family. If bad tendencies are transmitted, it is probable that good ones are likewise transmitted." [Darwin, Descent]

"There is ample evidence that the effects of mutilations and of accidents, especially or perhaps exclusively when followed by disease, are occasionally inherited. There can be no doubt that the evil effects of the long-continued exposure of the parent to injurious conditions are sometimes transmitted to the offspring. So it is, as we shall see in a future chapter, with the effects of the use and disuse of parts, and of mental habits." [Darwin, Variation v2]

"With respect to Jews, I have been assured by three medical men of the Jewish faith that circumcision, which has been practised for so many ages, has produced no inherited effect. Blumenbach, however, asserts that Jews are often born in Germany in a condition rendering circumcision difficult, so that a name is given them signifying "born circumcised,"... Dr. Riedel... in North Celebes writes to me that the boys there go naked until from six to ten years old; and he has observed that many of them, though not all, have their prepuces much reduced in length, and this he attributes to the inherited effects of the operation... Notwithstanding the above several negative cases, we now possess conclusive evidence that the effects of operations are sometimes inherited." [Darwin, Variation v1]

Like Ann Coulter I like beagles. The ship Darwin made famous was called the Beagle. I salute him for that.

Darwin was a fool.

Thanks to him, we see ourselves as part of nature, instead of separate from it and superior to it. If it weren't for him, we would not be concerned about the way we have, in our arrogant past, ravaged the small planet on which we live.

This is the narcissistic leftist view of man. They only accept half of Darwin, the natural selection part. But Darwin wrote that we descended from tribal warfare. We are not natural but are the result of man-made high speed evolution. We are really optimizations for making war. We walk upright to carry weapons and are engineered to walk great distances to do battle. There is no natural need for our intelligence to be far in excess of that to find food or shelter. Human means war maker but the ivory tower leftists completely ignore that very ugly aspect. We are hardly natural and neither are the foods we like to eat. Until academia comes around the creationists have a very valid point. We could not have descended from natural selection.

There can be no Cambrian explosion if you believe all life began in less than a week.

Plus the “explosion” is thought to have taken perhaps 30 million years, not exactly an overnight event.

It more accurately describes the period when life began developing the characteristics which permitted fossilization on a large scale. It doesn’t disprove Darwin’s theory at all. It’s supportive of it.

Public, Schools, Public Universities, Grants for Scientific research.

These are the peoples (Note: not your elitists’) institutions.

Was it one of your gods, Julian Huxley who said, “We believe in evolution not because it is proved or provable, but because the alternative, special creation is clearly incredible.”?

Now how did that primordial soup contain life?? Some of us just don’t have enough Faith to believe in evolution/Atheism.

Ah the adoration and worship of Darwin reaches a pinnacle of thunder.

Election 2008 can be fully laid upon the scientifically controlled education system.... So I plan on watching these gifted higher intellectuals among US lead US out of the wilderness. I think it is important to note that the gods of scientific evolution are NEVER EVER responsible for their outcomes. There is always some random unexpected event their models could have not been aware to calculate.

One would think that these fittest among US that rule public education would at least proclaim their accomplishments... The claim is that the college educated among US voted for Bama nation. Congratulations to you 'smart' people, you are NOW in charge.

The science of evolution doesn't even address the actual origin of life, nor does it weigh in on the existence of God. You can easily accept evolution, believe that God started life, and He designed the process whereby His creation transformed itself into its present glory.

Evolution only addresses the transformation.

The only reason why evolution is commonly thought to be either atheistic or deny God's role in the creation of life is that it is contrary to accounts contained in the first two chapters of the Bible. But it's contrary only if you require Genesis to be literally true instead of an allegory.

The facts on (and actually in) the ground don't support a literal interpretation. If all plant and animal species were created within a week, then the fossils of them should be found in every age and layer of rock conducive to fossilization. But you don't. You won't find a giraffe in Cambrian rocks. You never find a dog or ape in Devonian rocks. Instead, you find things which don't exist today but look as if they're related. Some aren't and appear to be dead ends.

Nevertheless, nothing regarding evolution denies God's hands in any of this.

You may be pointing towards Intelligent Design which is fine, but that is not what Fundamental Evolutionists believe. They believe evolution is a random occurrence w/random evolutions and that is what is taught/brainwashed in the classrooms.

Evolution has forced God out of the equation and led us to relativism, which is where we are now.

I don’t quite get into the Intelligent Design camp. If all the details were designed, there wouldn’t be so many design failures.

But the concept behind natural selection is flawless. It works in nature and it works in captalism as well. Those who perform well and adapt to changing conditions prosper, and those who can’t, fail. It rewards success and improvement. It virtually assures that mistakes will be punished and, over the long haul, improvements will continue to be made.

Outside events can interrupt the process. A flood, an asteroid, or some other catacylismic event, perhaps even manmade. But all that does is reset the stage to see who or what can adapt best to the new conditions.

I think the process was designed by God. But I think the process is so good, that it runs iteself.

Dust off Sun Tzu instead.

*snort* For Christmas, we gave our oldest son a copy of the "Illustrated Art of War", which also included translations of The Book of Five Rings, and another Eastern classic, the name of which escapes me. It was a TOME; weighed about 10 pounds! He was thrilled with it, as he'd read it several years ago when he was in high school.
