Absolute imperfection: Lions become first team to finish 0-16
Seattle Post-Intelligencer ^ | 12/28/08

Green Bay, WI (Sports Network) - The Detroit Lions became the first team in NFL history to go 0-16 as Aaron Rogers threw three touchdowns and the Green Bay Packers put down the Lions, 31-21, to end Detroit's season of futility.

The Lions (0-16) became the first team since the 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who went 0-14 in their expansion season, and the first team since the league went to a 16-game format to finish a full campaign without a win.

The Lions now join the 1962 New York Mets (40-112), the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers (9-73) and the 1974-75 Washington Capitals (8-67-5) as having the worst season in their respective sports. However, the Mets and Capitals were both expansion teams when they set the mark.

So Detroit gets first pick in the NFL draft. Who’d want to play for them?

Lets compare, Detroit Lions come from the same city of the unsucessfull big 3 who can't run their own business either.

Down here in Tennessee we have the Titans which though not having the best year are still having a good year and may win their division title on top of the supperbowl, (well lets not talk about todays game though,) and Nissan without a corrupt UAW or clueless management are doing a lot better then the big three though I have to admit they are also selling less cars too but not in the same sinking boat as the big three.

hmmm, it makes one wonder if morality and being proud of your city or region has something to do with it.

Be confident that the Lions' intrepid owner, William Clay Ford, will strive for another perfect year in 2009.

In the offseason, he will meditate and contemplate. He will ask himself, "What can I do to screw this team up even more?"

And then, he will do it.

He is a pathological loser.

The Lions make the Bengals, Browns, and Raiders look like well run teams.

I would pull an Elway if drafted by the Lions with the #1 pick. In all seriousness, the Lions should trade back several times and aquire multiple high picks. It is going to take more than one super college player to fix this team.

Go Ravens. It looks like we are going to the playoffs.

Iraqi Hockey Player

The Detroit Red Wings foreign scout flies to Baghdad to watch
a young Iraqi play hockey in the new American sponsored league,
and is suitably impressed and arranges for him
to come over to the US. Ken Holland
signs him to a one year contract and
the kid joins the team for the preseason.

Two weeks later the Wings are down 4-0 to the Blackhawks
with only 10 minutes left. Mike Babcock gives the young Iraqi
the nod and he goes in.

The kid is a sensation - scores 5 goals in 10 minutes
and wins the game for the Wings! The fans are delighted,
the players and coaches are delighted,
and the media love the new star.

When the player comes off the ice he phones his mom:
“Hello mom, guess what?”
“I played for 10 minutes today, we were 4-0 down,
but I scored 5 goals and we won. Everybody
loves me, the fans, the media, they all love me.”

“Wonderful,” says his mom, “Let me tell you about my day.
Your father got shot in the street and robbed, your sister
and I were ambushed, raped and beaten, and your
brother has joined a gang of looters, and all
while you were having such great time!”

The young Iraqi is very upset.
“What can I say mom? I’m so sorry.”

“Sorry? You’re Sorry?!!” says his mom,
“It’s your fault we moved to
DETROIT in the first place!”

As Debbie Schlussel said of her hometown team: "Its like old Avis commercial: We try harder. With the Detroit Lions, not really." They get paid millions and show the fans they don't care about winning. Mike Ditka wouldn't to coach that bunch of sorry ass losers. 0 for 16. An all time record, baby!

They could only hope to have the turnaround that a team similar to them - last year/this year's Miami Dolphins - had...one win last year, playoffs this year.

“So Detroit gets first pick in the NFL draft. Who’d want to play for them?”

Whoever they pick will want a gigantic four-year contract. Somewhere in the tens of millions per year. He’ll play half-hearted and conservative for those four years in order to keep himself healthy, then bail out for a more promising team to get his playoff games and possible Superbowl. Nobody will want to play for this “football team” with it’s dismal history without a huge, but very short, contract.

Besides, the Lions will probably pick a center.

The Ravens were the only team the Dolphins beat in the previous season. I think Miami will be effective running the ball on the Ravens, so I will take Miami.

If you read the sports pages, watch sports programs, and analyze what is being said and how it is being said, you have to conclude that the sports writers, commentators, as well as fans, believe (without articulating it) that it is possible for every team in the league to have a winning season. Well, duh!

The Ravens have already beat Miami in Miami THIS year and only the Giants have run the ball on the Ravens this year.

If Miami’s gameplan is to run the ball they will lose. The Ravens stuggle with short slants and hooks to the sidelines against their relatively weak corners. Pennington is accurate but does not have a strong downfield arm. Dink and dunk the ball down the field will be how Miami scores, if they score. Of the Ravens last 6 opponents only Dallas (in a loss) has scored more than 13 points.

I am terribly sad for the Lions players, as well as Lions fans. That said, William Clay Ford can take a flying leap. He is a pox on the NFL and I hope Goodall steps in to rescue this franchise. Anything short of a complete and thorough house cleaning is unacceptable.

While I am sad for the Lions, I am completely giddy the Cowboys and the Patriots will miss the playoffs! Go Indy!!!
