WMD Strike Probability Over Next Five Years
The New Media Journal ^ | Dec 29, 2008 | Dr. Walid Phares

Posted on 12/29/2008 9:15:00 AM PST by NewMediaJournal

An intelligence assessment, the "Internal Homeland Security Threat Assessment for the years 2008-2013, obtained by the Associated Press projected several "dramatic" developments. Among these projections that terrorism directed against the US will "continue to be driven by driven by instability in the Middle East and Africa." The report asserted that WMD attacks "could be carried out against America" but then added that "these threats are also the most unlikely because it is so difficult for al-Qaida and similar groups to acquire the materials needed to carry out such plots." The report reasserts a number of predictions made before and noted that increasing numbers of individuals will pose as refugees or asylum seekers.

While the report doesn't add much to previously projected assessments over the past few years it deserves a thorough evaluation by the Counter Terrorism community in general and the experts studying the strategies and tactics of the Jihadists. For as we are moving under a new US Administration, with the expectation that new directions are to be set, a review of the past five to seven years in terms of War on Terror strategies is now a must. In other words the Counter Terrorism community in the public and private sectors needs to draw conclusions as to policies and strategies adopted under the departing Administration. A serious review of US Government reports issued since the beginning of the War on Terror must be undertaken and compared and contrasted with developments in the real world and on the battlefields.

The good news is that Saddam will not be arming the terrorists with WMDs!

There is only one WMD. It is the nuclear bomb. All others are “terrorist” weapons. You kill a few, but scare hundreds of thousands.

Actual mass destruction, so far, is the realm of only the nuke.

So far.

Well, maybe. Smallpox, given that only us oldsters are immune, or pneumonic plague, esp. if it were made antibiotic resistant (and no, that doesn’t take a genetic engineering lab, just a way to grow many generations of plague bacillus and antibiotics—harness Darwinian evolution to do the job) will do a nice job of mass destruction on the population, though not the infrastructure.

The jihadis also have a delivery system for contagious biological agents that’s not open to civilized powers: themselves. A handful of plague-infected jihadis flying hither and thither, coughing in enclosed airplane cabins, mingling with the crowd at restaurants, rock-concerts, political rallies, shopping malls, and the like, could easily create an epidemic that would sicken millions and kill hundreds of thousands (at least).

“...these projections that terrorism directed against the US will “continue to be driven by driven by instability in the Middle East and Africa.””

Umm... no. Terrorism will continue to be driven against the US and everywhere else in the world by a combination of Islam and communism.

If you wanna play the “root causes” game, you’ve gotta actually look at root causes, and not just regurgitate the bull***t memes invented by those pushing the theory of immiseration in devotion to the old school Uncle Joe’s fan club.

I’ve read that the preceding influenza epidemic actually killed more people than WWI.

Probability? The MSM could hardly better keep the serfs in a state of vague anxiety so nobody complains about $3 trillion FedGov budgets. .

Brace yourselves for an attack every second of every minute of every hour of every day of every week of every month of every year for the rest of your lives. Who knows? Maybe it will never happen...as long as we have someone like President Bush looking out for our Country.

I don’t know that a anti-biotic resistant plague bacillus would necessarily decimate a well nourished, healthy population, yes it would strain medical facilities providing massive ammounts of support treatmens. But plague would be more fatal to malnourished, immunologically compromised from chronic disease populations common to third world countries.

It wouldn’t be like the Black Death or even like the flu epedimic of 1918. We are far better nourished and more healthy than we were 100 years ago and have vastly expanded medical knowledge and facilities now than we did then.

Trying to release a super plague variant as a form of terror and death is very likely to boomerang quite badly on the very populations that these jihadi terrosts come from.

We can absorb the hit, they can’t. Doesn’t mean they are smart enough to figure that out though. Which is why you should have at least a 1 month food supply in case of quarantine conditions.
