Have you stopped beating your wife?
sorry Chickensoup, couldn't help jumping in!
My goodness, how you leap to conclusions!
No, I didn't say that, did I? Or even suggest it.
Here is what I said:
We have a responsibility to help those who cannot help themselves.
We have a responsibility to provide opportunity for those who can help themselves.
And we have a responsibility not to enable those who would prefer to be helped by others, rather than do anything to help themselves.
You might call this social triage.
Now, which group do you suppose children might fit into...??? Think real hard.
I agree with what you say in principle, but we should help on a case by case basis-no deadlines.
Yes, and one of them is GENERATIONS OF FAMILIES LIVING ON WELFARE.
Anyone that would send kids to most foster homes doesn’t like kids or doesn’t know what a foster home is like in many cases. You know the state of Georgia lost thousands of young foster kids in the 90’s-no idea what became of them.
My wife taught school in Wisconsin last year. This family dressed their foster kids in rags (their own kids were dressed very nicely using the foster money no doubt), the foster kids had chores galore (no chores for the natural kids). They didn’t even get the same dinner. Yep, you guessed it. The foster kid got grilled cheese and canned tomato soup. The family dined in style. My wife actually called the social worker who was aware of the situation, but she said they were not actively abusive...in the physical sense so it was a pretty decent placement for foster care. The foster parents refused to help with homework and complained that it interfered with the kid’s ability to do chores...slavery if you ask me.
I think the reforms of the 90’s were sorely needed. No doubt welfare is a form of slavery. However, we still need a safety net.
OK. I'm intrigued. Who should decide on "a case-by-case basis"? And how?
And why "no deadlines"? "Deadlines" for what? Do you mean that there would be compliance requirements, but that there would be no deadline for meeting them? No consequences for failure?
I would very much like to know exactly how you would propose to "help the poor"...
Who knows...I might vote for you.
You could put that in font size 72, bold and in red. He ain't gonna get it. I'm DONE here!
Keep feeding them younguns at school BB. Before long their families will be inviting themselves to your dinners and will be EXPECTING open doors.
Please don't let them down.
>>Alfred Riley, who lives in the Boulevard Homes public housing complex in west Charlotte, said he has tried hard for a long time but can’t find work. <<
Maybe he needs to move to an area that has jobs that reward his skill set.
If one really, sincerely cannot find work, one needs to move to an area that has work. It is common. Arky meet Okey.
Well, I am sorry to disappoint you. I did not lose my job. I’m surprised that you didn’t hear...GM is down until early February. Management gets paid 75% salary, but most of us took vacation so we could help the company...so I have more time than I like on my hands. We can’t take second jobs (in our contract). Unless you are unemployed (which I hope you are not unlike you I wish ill on no man),you probably don’t have more time.
If you have no job, you can’t afford to more. what if he moved and could not find a job.
more = move
Kicking people out of housing on an arbitrary date that does not take economy or the people’s ability to obtain employment is not a good idea. Social workers can review cases and make recommendations on how to get people to a point they can make it on their own.
>>Wow, great people in Charlotte.<<
Yep.
How do you know how many of these people “can’t” get jobs. It is amazing how motivational “forced responsibility” can be.
You remind me of the driver that stops for a car to take a left turn in front of you and causes a traffic jam behind you. That is, this is actually very beneficial, in the long run, for everyone involved, including, but not limited to, the taxpayers hitherto being suckered. And those doing the suckering will actually benefit from this. I am not kidding. Nobody is gonna die here, unless self inflicted.
Unemployment is rising...most of the really poor |I have worked for didn’t have good skills...so I think some can’t get jobs.
>>As a civilized nation, we have a responsibility to the poor.<<
Absolutely!
But not via government redistribution of wealth. The Biblical example is each individual giving of his own free will. You take that part away and you just have Animal Farm.
It’s never, EVER, a “good” time. That is why it takes real “adults” to make this kind of decision.
>>No conservative would object to government...assistance to two legs of the social triage.<<
Actually, I do object. It is not the government’s job and it violates the spirit behind the Biblical concept of giving and receiving. The core spirit is the giver gives voluntarily. The government takes the funds as taxes via the power of the gun. As a taxpayer I have lost all choice in the matter.
Everything is about WHY. Why do we give?
so if you are poor and you cant find a job you should lose your kids I guess. You will never convince me that is a conservative view.
Personally I prefer orphaneges. I think that they have much better oversight and are more cost effective. They provided a springboard for kids into the world.
>>No offense...you family did a nice thing and all, but we used to call that slavery I think.<<
Uh, no, we didn’t. Never have. Slavery is where you are owned by another person. Now, don’t get me wrong, many americans are indentured slaves - to their house payment, credit card payments, etc. They will be working long and hard hours for the rest of their lives in a failed attempt to pay off the debt they have already incurred.
