The actor, 46, is believed to have alerted the FBI and begun increasing security around him and his family.
It is thought he received clear warnings from groups opposed to his religious organisation.
The Mail on Sunday reported that Cruise now lives in a separate location to his wife Katie Holmes and their two-year-old daughter Suri, and that the couple travel in bomb-proof cars.
The newspaper added that other protesters have been angered by Cruise's decision to star in Valkyrie, in which he plays Claus von Stauffenberg, a German army officer who attempted to assassinate Adolf Hitler in 1944.
Some critics have reported concerns that the film is sympathetic towards the Nazis and omits details of their actions during the Second World War.
It was reported earlier this year that Cruise had been warned that anthrax would be placed in the ventilation system of his Los Angeles office.
He was thought to have spent £5million on having an underground bunker built in the grounds of his Colorado estate

Is the movie Valkyrie any good?
If it’s about the XB70, yeah!
Valkyrie is a good flick and Cruise plays the part well. Dont pay any attention to most of the people who are knocking the movie, my bet is they haven’t even seen it yet.
I just returned from the theater. The movie was pretty well done but you have to have a good background of the history of what was happening in Germany at the time and who was involved or you would be lost.
The acting was well done, although I don’t think I would have picked Tom Cruise for that particular role.
About the comment in the article that the film was sympathetic to the Nazis...well...they must have been watching a different movie, I didn’t get that at all.
I was pleasantly surprised - Cruise did a credible job and it did seem historically accurate compared to what I have read. The movie was anything but sympathetic to the Nazi regime. If you are a WW II buff you should enjoy it.It does underscore the saying “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing”.
This story reeks. I don’t believe it.
Cruise is thoroughly unhinged.
No way to tell what’s going on, it could easily all be in his mind - or a stunt.
Tom Cruise’s publicty rating sink so low he now resorts to this nonsense?
Movie tickets are not selling
If you want to get a war fix wait for Defiant to come out. I think it starts in LA and NY tomorrow.
Yes it is good
speaking of XB-70, what ever happened to the third one?
