I came across the term years ago in reference to the Stephen King usage of the cliche in his novels and movies.

His stories frequently have a benevolent and supernatural black character who steps in among the nasty, ugly, evil, guilty white characters. "Shining" etc.

It's a variation on "noble savage" in James Fennimore Cooper's novels, "Last of the Mohicans" etc.

I really have to say that I'm disappointed in Newt for jumping on the PC bandwagon and his FAKE outrage.
