Posted on 01/01/2009 7:20:44 AM PST by NYer
NEDERLAND, Colo. – A gunman who broke into a staff meeting at a Colorado ski resort ranting about religion asked the manager what he believed and shot him twice when the victim responded he was Catholic, according to reports published today about the tragedy.
The gunman later was shot and killed by a sheriff's deputy in a firefight alongside a snowy mountain road, authorities confirmed.
The Boulder County coroner identified the gunman as Derik A. Bonestroo, 24, who had been living in Nederland. According to a report in the Boulder Daily Camera, witnesses said Bonestroo burst into the staff meeting yesterday at the Eldora Mountain Resort near here.
Sheriff Joe Pelle said Bonestroo was yelling something about religion to employees when resort General Manager Brian Mahon heard the commotion and came into the room. The Camera said witnesses reported the shooter asked Mahon which religion he believed, and when Mahon said he was Catholic, the shooter fired twice and killed him.
Sheriff's Commander Phil West said, "There are various interpretations about what was said. Witnesses told us (Bonestroo) had been through some emotional crisis."
Mahon, 49, leaves behind a wife and two children. He had worked at Eldora since 1991.
According to a statement from Boulder County Undersheriff Tom Shomaker, deputy John Seifert was on duty in Nederland when the call came in about the shooting. Told the shooter had fled and given a description of the vehicle, Seifer spotted a suspect vehicle on the Peak-to-Peak Highway only a few miles downhill from the ski area. After a short pursuit, the suspect vehicle stopped, the sheriff said.
"The male driver immediately opened fire on the deputy after stopping his vehicle," the sheriff's department statement said.

Prayers for him and his family.
Catholic Ping List
Please freepmail me if you want on/off this list
The guy probably read some of the anti-Catholic posts on this site and got carried away.
Yeah, I'm sure that's it. Couldn't be that he was just some crazy bastard.
I somehow sincerely doubt that.
All holy martyrs of God, pray for us!
That would qualify him as having written some of them.
and he got some shooting tips here too
No, evil is not battling with God, who is in control, but with those who would follow God and spread His word.
And don't doubt that evil can don a nice smile and obtain power with smooth phrases.
For years it was said that anti-Catholic bias was the only acceptible form of bigotry left in America.
Some would think the title is misleading
Prayers for the poor man’s wife and kids.
And they would be incorrect.
Coroner’s Office says 24-year-old lift operator, Derik A. Bonestroo of Nederland, who shot and killed the general manager of Eldora Mountain Resort died after shooting himself.
It’s going to get ugly here real fast ...
Heh. Thanks, that was my first chuckle for the day -and 2009.
Has anybody come up with the term Christianphobes yet?
Could the killer have been a Muslim convert?
Can they change the headline ... difference between being ‘shot’ and ‘killed.’ Poor Mr. Mahon unfortunately was killed for his religious beliefs. May his soul rest in peace and his family find comfort.
I am meeting more and more of these anarchist anti-Christian types here in Colorado. One kid I caught stealing a puppy from a pet store when nuts and started screaming, “Christian! You F****** Christian!”
Two people I work with are violent anti-Chrsitan types. Just starting to talk religion, such as something as simple as its history, will send those two into a temper tantrum.
Of course not. I failed to add a sarcasm notice but I was trying to point out that a lot of that crap has shown up on this site.
I am sure this is just one more liberal who could not drag himself to make it to 1/20/2009.
You know, Bush’s Last Day?
The last eight years have been so difficult for liberals. They have been under the thumb of government sanctioned religion since Bush came to power, their rights have been trampled by Bush, Cheney and the Religious Right.
The stress of waiting to be free must have been too much for this poor fellow.
(Prayers for this man who was murdered and his family)
Coroners Office says....Derik A. Bonestroo of Nederland, .....died after shooting himself.
Interesting, guy offs himself and the Authorities call it a "gun battle"
The mentally ill are the canaries in our culture. They pick up the sniffings of the culture. There is a lot of Christian hate out there and it is growing.
Any idea where this is coming from? Other than Satan, of course. Is there a cult or group of some sort?
We are talking about Boulder...
Have you ever been tempted to sue them for creating a hostile work environment?
You have to read more carefully. After being stopped, he immediately started shooting at the deputy. That would be a gun battle. He thereafter shot himself. That would be suicide or, if you prefer, offing himself.
The headline is misleading to the extent that it says only that the manager was shot. People survive shootings every day. The manager was, in fact, killed.
Okay, well, nevermind.
Nederland is a cult
One thing that seems to hold true is that secularized people in the USA will go to every extreme to deny that the reason a crazed person kills someone might have to do with the killer having anti-Christian bias or hatred. Even his own words will not make this killer guilty of killing this man because of the man’s faith.
Or one of the gay activist angry over prop 8 in California
Another Holy Martyr......
We are talking about Boulder...
While visiting the Pioneer Inn, local fire department volunteers would frequently set a fire in the cemetary, put it out and return to the Inn for a free round...
You make an interesting observation
I wonder if the editor thought "killed' was too strong a word and would create fear among Christians or worse did not want to have the religious elements use this story as fodder for propaganda purposes
“Any idea where this is coming from?”
Oh, that’s an easy one: Parents!
What do we expect from parents who have refused to discipline their children? They grow up with a “You can’t tell me what to do!” attitude. They grow up arrogant and without humility. They have gotten everything they want and have been told what great thinkers they are. It is the typical underachiever complex.
They havent accomplished much with their lives but believe they could do anything they wanted so anything anyone else has done is nothing to admire. They havent accomplished anything so they havent placed their butts on the line. They have nothing to lose but are afraid to try. So, instead of trying, they try to tear down everything else. Simple relativism: They feel better relative to something else if they can just tear it down and bring down to their level. Otherwise, they have their feelings hurt. They exhibit simple childish behavior because no parent has ever challenged them, disciplined them, and they have nothing to show for their lives.
They believe by having gone to an easy liberal college they have accomplished great feats of heroism and daunting thought. Some go to the Army or Marines, do poorly in administrative positions, find themselves puny in comparison to the more accomplished soldiers, and resent the relative position they find themselves. We have on guy who claims 5 combat jumps. hehe There havent been 5 combat jumps since he has been alive.
Some of the common traits I find of these adult children are that they smoke, play video games, are hot headed, and always try to prove what men they are., and they lie about everything. Typical underachievers.
Pathetic. Catholic bigots get so tiring.
I believe any religion can further mess up your head if you are already disturbed and confused about Truth. Faith is different from religion. What counts is the personal relationship with Jesus Christ through faith. He loved everyone enough to die for them, but for those who reject the sacrifice there is no peace.
Underachievers generally are too apathetic to make the effort to shoot somebody. Not that lack of discipline isn’t a big issue, but I think there’s more to this. Mental illness and demonic possession being part of the equation.
If this was not an extreme example of anti-Christian bigotry I would be tempted to agree with you. However, the verbal hatred I have encountered on Leftist and Libertarian websites make me question whether the acceptability of anti-Christian bigotry cannot, under the proper circumstances lead to the targeting and murder of Christians.
As an example, we can refer you back to the 1930s when anti-Semitism was perfectly acceptable not just in Germany but also in the rest of the world. The acceptance by a large number of people that it is OK to look at people of a certain race or creed as lesser is the first step. That can then lead to those who are emotionally ready to commit mayhem to do so, as long as the victim is of the despised class.
For some reason, the killer found affirmation that Christians were acceptable targets of his rage. Where could he have learned that?
“And don’t doubt that evil can don a nice smile and obtain power with smooth phrases.”
Powerful observation. Very fitting, especially right now.
“Underachievers generally are too apathetic to make the effort to shoot somebody.”
Many are violent people. Underachievers come in all flavors. Not all are couch potatoes. They are usually the frustrated types.
RIP Brian Mahon. Prayers for his family.
You make an interesting observation.
I wonder if the editor thought "killed' was too strong a word and would create fear among Christians or worse did not want to have the religious elements use this story as fodder for propaganda purposes.
More likely, the editor wanted a "dramatic" headline and, being anti-gun, thought that "shot" would sound more evil than a mere "killed."
I don’t think I could find a priest out there who would not support lying about your faith to a madman, if it would save your life, or the life of someone else.
The Catholic church has long held the view that the insane are not responsible for their actions. But the flip side of this should be the recognition that the insane should only be given the respect that one gives to a dangerous thing.
There is no demand that Catholics stand underneath a tottering boulder, just because a sign beneath it says, “Only Faithful Catholics May Stand Here.”
And the madman is equally mindless as the boulder. It is not his fault if he kills for a reason, or no reason.
A Catholic may choose to be a martyr, or not, when faced against a bloody minded killer, who would kill him for his faith. But this is a different thing entirely.
