President-elect Barack Obama will have a Commander in Chief's Ball during his inauguration with military personnel, their spouses and those wounded fighting in the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as guests.
In announcing this Thursday, officials said that tickets for the Jan. 20 military-only ball will be free to guests. The formal event will be at the National Building Museum in Washington.
"It is a privilege to honor our men and women in uniform during our inaugural festivities by continuing the tradition of the Commander in Chief's Ball. Our troops represent the best America has to offer, and without their dedication and sacrifice we would not be able to enjoy the freedoms that we are coming together to celebrate on January 20," Obama said in a statement released while he vacationed here in his native Hawaii.

An inaugural tradition initiated by GWB, not Yo’ Mamma Obama.
Hmmmmm.........putting on a display that he’s actually cares about our troops. We will see what, if anything of SUBSTANCE he does, especially when the chips are down!
It’s not that he’ll be spending most of his time there. There must be dozens of balls for this or that group.
He’ll spend a bunch of time just going and coming.
I think that's what Obama meant when he said, "...continuing the tradition of the Commander in Chief's Ball" in his statement.
Michelle has listed “military families” as one of her signature First Lady issues. Continuing on with the Military Ball is in keeping with the care and respect the Obamas hold our troops! //sarc
Is this an invitation or order?
And this will be paid for by??????
Present-elect Obama could have stiffed our military but did not...give the brother some credit...
But, will anyone show as they did for GW?
Bush’s Third Term..... PING
Give him time.
Ah, thanks for that insight. 1/10 of a kudo to Obama for not deep sixing this. Another 1/10 if he actually attends it.
Yeah, but you can bet if the tradition was started by Clinton, it would say so boldly in the article.
I won't...he just knows that if he didn't he'd get criticized right off the bat. And we all know how thin-skinned he is.
Really? He voted against funding the troops each time a funding bill without surrender terms came to the Senate floor. He gave aide and comfort to the enemy by saying that we cannot win the war in Iraq. He voted against the surge which gave us victory in Iraq.
But now we should give him credit for a PR thing? Did you really expect him not attend a traditional inauguration ball for the military and now he surprised you by attending? Are we going to lower the standards so much now when dealing with Obama?
Suppose they throw the party and NOBODY came?
For which side?
