The recent "swarm" of small earthquake tremors happening in Yellowstone National Park are not likely to be a sign of a pending "supervolcano" eruption as some fear, according to a top scientist at the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory.
Dr. Jacob Lowenstern of the U.S. Geological Survey said Monday that the earthquake activity in Yellowstone most likely will continue for weeks, "and then will end without any other related activity."
Lowenstern's comments were reported by money and politics blogger James Pethokoukis of U.S. News & World Report, who chatted with the scientist via e-mail.
Yellowstone National Park was jostled by a host of small earthquakes this week, and scientists watched closely to see whether the more than 250 tremors were a sign of something bigger to come

Whew! I was buying up rice and beans, Y2K style.
Whew. We sure dodged that bullet in the nick of time. Now all we have to do is dodge the incoming Obama bullet.
God forbid anything bad happens during “The One’s” presidential term, obviously it will be Bush’s fault if we blow.
Try not to get worried

O s**t.
O s**t.
It’s fascinating to read about the seismic activity Yellowstone, because we know what this caldera is capable of. However, the chances that any given swarm of small earthquakes is a precursor to the ‘the big event’ is extremely small. Just to give perspective, there was a 7.4 earthquake in Yellowstone in 1959 and that didn’t lead to any notable volcanic activity.
Yeah but what has changed between yesterday and today? Yesterday it was “it’s happened in the past...we don’t know..we are watching.

A report from the MSM citing a government geologist. This is like the officers and crew of the Titanic telling the passengers that putting the women and children off in the lifeboats is just a "precautionary measure".
I do understand it, though. There is a very fine line between instilling concern combined with positive action and creating a panic. Especially now with so many who have seen all those "Yellowstone supervolcano pr0n" shows on Discovery and Nat Geo. Want to find the heart of the matter? If any of you know first responders in Idaho, (especially) Wyoming, Montana, Utah, Colorado, Nebraska and the Dakotas play "Go Fish" with them. See if they have received any out of the ordinary "instructions" or things of that nature.
Likely. Unlikely. Likely. Unlikely. Likely. Unlikely.
Volcanologists. Can’t live with ‘em. Can’t live without ‘em.
We need to keep this in mind just in case some sort of explosive event does occur soon at Yellowstone. Yellowstone farts a lot but only kills en masse on rare special occassions.
Are these the same people that said Global Warming is Man made? If so, then I am now really scared. They only seem to be right about 5% of the time. So if they say it won’t blow......?????
Are they using computer “models”? We all know what “scientists” can do with computer models.
Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
Whoops - better get that mortgage payment in the mail.
Don't s'pose the eggheads know that means.....
Oh crap, I guess I’m going to have to pay off those credit card bill after all.
I had a megga crush on Yvonne Elliman back then.
I'm with you wku....one look at my pantry and you would wrongly assume I was a Morman. One look at our backyard and you would rightly assume I am white trash; we have most of the cars we have ever owned in a sort of vehicle graveyard. We all save coffee cans, nuts and bolts, all sorts of oddities. We are ready for darn near anything. If we can find it....
That is neat!
thanks
Yeah, that’s exactly what all the experts and government types said in the movie, too!..............
Yellowstone >> IS << a supervolcano. Saying it is ‘unlikely’ is as nonsensical as saying the White House is unlikely.
Note the statement was made Monday, reported today. Since then the earthquake swarm has moved north and up (USGS is several hours behind in plotting), while harmonics indicative of magma movement are clear on the U. of Utah siesmographs. An eruption of some sort is likely within 72 hours, I say, but nothing will be heard from the USGS until after the fact.
Algore says he'll use his superpowers to prevent an eruption from preventing global warming.
Here is how a real interview with a scientist would go:
Reporter: OK, so you are saying that these small quakes do not indicate anything large is coming, right?
Scientist: Well, er, no. I am saying the odds of such a thing happening is fairly remote.
Reporter: If Yellowstone was going to blow, what would we see ahead of time?
Scientist: Well, I, uh, you would see some activity that would indicate something is about to happen.
Reporter: Like what type of activity?
Scientist: Well, uh, seismic activity of a very sophisticated type that would need interpretation from someone knowlegeable about this area and its history.
Reporter: Have you EVER been able to predict a large quake?
Scientist: No, but, uh, I once got the Pick 3 right.
Reporter: Has ANY scientist predicted a large quake ahead of time?
Scientist: Well, er, no, but that doesn’t mean we can’t. We just need more funding to continue our research into these things. You see, the Bush Administration cut funding for seismic research in favor of the war......
Reporter: Another lost opportunity to reveal the mysteries of earthquakes lost by this illegal war and illegitimate President. I, like so many, know that the Obama Administration will be able to predict every earthquake with 100% accuracy very soon.
Likely? Like 55% likely or 80% likely....?
I’m pretty sure this Johnson is from the Rock Ridge Johnsons.

I don’t know about an eruption within 72 hours, but it’s obvious that dismissing this is not a wise thing to do. I have a friend in Cody, Wyoming who says the local FD got a little heads-up from FEMA about this last week so it’s on the radar screen for the government.
~80% IMHO
LOL. It looks like it.

Brrrrrr.....
Sometimes I wonder why it took us so long to realize this National Treasure is really a super volcano.
The officials will be very concerned about creating panic as well as the impact on tourism.
In December 2000, scientists at the National Center for Prevention of Disasters in Mexico City predicted an eruption within two days at Popocatépetl, on the outskirts of Mexico City. Their prediction used research that had been done by Bernard Chouet, a Swiss volcanologist who was working at the United States Geological Survey and who first observed a relation between long-period events and an imminent eruption.[1][2][3] The government evacuated tens of thousands of people; 48 hours later, the volcano erupted as predicted. It was Popocatépetl’s largest eruption for a thousand years, yet no one was hurt.

Well, at least they’re paying attention to it.
Mark for later.
Long-period events is what we have right now ay Yellowstone....

They’re paying attention, but what the heck are they gonna be able to do, especially before an eruption? They’re not going to want to try to evacuate millions of people on a hunch, risk Heaven knows how many fatalities and injuries from a panicked stampede just on an educated guess. Not to mention the economic nightmare that would ensue. My bet is that even if they do suspect something horrific will happen, they won’t say a thing beforehand. And I couldn’t blame them. Folks should just be prepared for the worst and hope for the best. And plan on taking care of themselves instead of waiting for Uncle Sam to do it. That’s good advice no matter the disaster.
so your actually seeing harmonics?
