Walk for Life West Coast Launches Post-Abortion Billboard, Pro-Life March Coming

San Francisco, CA (LifeNews.com) -- The Walk for Life West Coast has grown since its inception and more than 25,000 people took part in the pro-life witness in one of the most pro-abortion cities in the nation. In preparation for the next walk on January 24, the group has sponsored a new billboard.

The sign, advertising the Walk for Life West Coast's signature slogan "Abortion Hurts Women" is now displayed near the approach to one of the most traveled bridges in the U.S.

The 20' x 60' billboard is easily visible to the more than 100,000 cars driving the freeway daily on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge approach.

It includes a phone number for a post-abortion helpline, which is staffed by women who have themselves experienced abortion.

Walk for Life co-chair Eva Muntean talked with LifeNews.com about the billboard, which went up on December 31, and the upcoming walk.

"San Francisco is a beautiful city but there is a lot of sadness beneath the surface--until recently we had more abortions than live births, and a high percentage of our population has experienced abortion," she said.

"We need to reach those women (and men) who are hurting, and this seemed like the most effective method," Muntean added.

The billboard is located at Fourth and Bryant Streets in San Francisco. The Bay Bridge carries approximately 270,000 cars a day, according to state Department of Transportation statistics.

Walk for Life West Coast was founded in 2005 and drew 8,000 people the first year. Each year the turnout has grown, and it draws walkers from along the Pacific coast and as far east as Florida and New York.

A record 25,000 pro-life people participated in the annual event last year, with more modern presentations of the pro-life message to the more liberal populations on the Left Coast.

Marchers carried signs saying “Abortion Hurts Women” and “Women Deserve Better.”

Walkers paraded down thee streets of San Francisco after hearing from Alveda King, the niece of Martin Luther King, Jr., and Gianna Jessen, a woman who survived an abortion, at a pre-walk rally.

Only about 250 pro-abortion protesters showed up to hurl insults and wave their banners in the faces of those attending the walk.

"I was aborted and did not die," Jessen told the crowd. Instead, "the abortionist signed my birth certificate."

King compared the pro-life movement with the struggle her family endured for civil rights for African Americans.

"My uncle said injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere," King said.

Some 5,000 people participated in 2005, there were 20,000 in 2007 and organizers hope for even more this year.

Hopefully this will open some eyes.

I have a problem with the slogan though. While abortion definitely hurts those who perpetrate it, we usually think of the victims of murder before we think of the murderers.

However, there are tens of millions of women in the country who have had abortions and they often become some of the most effective proponents of life.

Definitely. My concern is with making it appear the foremost wrong, when killing babies is the foremost wrong.

I agree, but these programs are working.

Abortion is a human rights violation.

The right to life, which all humans have.

Put it in those terms and the San Francisco garbage will be destroyed - the one thing they claim to be champions of is human rights.

Why can they not defend the most basic right?

You reach people however you can reach them. Some women DO feel "forced" into abortion - teens by their parents, women by abusive boyfriends. You know the other slogan: abortion=1 dead, 1 wounded. Many women who abort, thinking it will solve their problems, come to regret it deeply. If they truly repent, who are we to judge? As someone said, their voices are important to the cause.

West Coast Walk for Life is NOT just conservatives. It includes 'Democrats for Life' and other groups who oppose abortion on feminist grounds.

Still, you don’t want to distort the main reason why abortion is wrong. If they had two billboards, to have one focus on the women would be fine, provided that the other focuses on the primary victims.

Short of tar and feathering liberal judges, I can’t think of anything better than doing this. Congrats to all involved. Hopefully this will spread.

Legal abortion on demand must be stopped. Just as it grew in favor over the years after Roe v Wade, with things like this, it will grow in disfavor. We must win the hearts and minds of the people and the way to do this is to keep the victims front and center. One of the problems with making people understand the enormous evil of this practice, is that they never see the victims. I would love to attend one of these and God willing one day I will. In the mean time, I will continue to pray the rosary every Friday in front of one of the clinics here in Vegas, help with the crisis pregnancy centers and support the only home for unwed teen mothers here in Nevada.

We must do all we can. We are not asked to win the war, but to continue to fight the battle, trusting in Jesus and His mother to hear our cries for mercy for the women and children harmed in this holocaust.

Ah, but if you mention the psych damage done to the women, you can also reach those who are more concerned about people already born.

What is better, failing to end abortion because some would do it for the wrong reason - because it harms the mother's psyche - or ending it by any argument available?

Eliminating abortion will please God!

p.s. Running any billboard that implies abortion is bad is an act of courage in the Bay Area. I invite you to WCWFL to see the frothing, snarling faces of evil who counter-protest us every year.

Thank God for the SFPD, they do an outstanding job!

I don’t disagree with any of that, but how do you know that for every convert to pro-life who converts out of concern for women there isn’t ten potential converts who do not convert because the pro-life message was not clear about the principal victims?

It’s like calling for a crusade by pointing out that Arab women wear uncomfortable clothes.

The message that abortion is murder is not new and most have heard it, though they may disagree. The message that abortion hurts the women it is supposed to help IS relatively new.

I hope this innovation doesn’t cloud the real message.

I live in Sacramento and am likely to be in the SF one, if I can get my ducks in a row.
