A Spurt of Quake Activity Raises Fears in Yellowstone
time ^ | By Pat Dawson / Billings Thursday, Jan. 01, 2009 | time

We who live along Montana's Yellowstone River are downstream from a simmering caldera, a geologic hot spot that has become especially active recently. Indeed, Yellowstone National Park contains the floor of a gigantic volcanic cauldron, one that rises and sinks with the forces that lie beneath — hence the picturesque geysers and steam holes. But a wave of recent earthquake activity is raising fears that have their origins 642,000 years ago, when a Yellowstone "supervolcano" exploded so violently that it created the caldera itself. Today, such an explosion — 1,000 times more powerful than the explosion of Mount St. Helens in 1980 — would not only cover most of the U.S. with ash but also throw so much dust into the atmosphere that the world's climate could change.

Then the “world” would just continue to blame the US for all their problems....only this time it would be for real.

Not a bad movie but Segal like Shatner is too much of a ham. Just my opinion.

"Why doesn’t Obama use his powers to stop the earthquakes?"

He's preoccupied helping Oprah lose all her wait (again) and keeping Rahm Emmanuel out of prison.

He doesn't want to. Just as Bush refuses to push the secret magic button that will fix the economy (because he wants everyone to suffer), Obama wants the entire U.S. covered in ash so that no one will be able to tell he has been smoking.

I know. As soon as I saw it posted I realized my error. Apparently, after three beers and the excitement of the Utah upset, my brain checked out. Embarrassing!

According to the pros in Vegas it was. The last line I saw was 'Bama by 10 on. Even with a very impressive performance, the Utes don't have much of a chance of getting even a piece of the National title.

Not to worry though, after the Messiah fixes the economy, the war in the middle-east and the caldera in Yellowstone, he's going to install a NCAA playoff system. I can hardly wait (spelled correctly this time).

I happen to be a died in the wool Bama fan. This years record was a surprise to Bama fans since we were expecting it to tale Sabin a coupel of years to build a winning team.

Utah was better prepared to play this game. The first quarter showed who wanted it more. Once Bama got so far behind, they were not going to catch up.

Utah scored the first 21 points. After that it was Bama chasing its own tail ... and they still didn't reach the initial 21 Utah got in the first quarter.

Watch the birds flying around and wildlife for any changes. Are the bears coming out of hibernation?

Here in south central PA I’m seeing twice the normal deer count on our property and generally an increase in wildlife over the last week.

... throw so much dust into the atmosphere that the world's climate could change.

So Time Magazine knows with certainty that a few tons of man-made CO2 definitely WILL change the climate, but gigatons of natural ejecta from the Yellowstone supervolcano might only just possibly change the climate? The geologic records show that the last eruption of the Yellowstone caldera nearly wiped out life on earth due to drastic climate change lasting apparently 1,000 years. But why let facts get in the way?

I live on the Yellowstone 75 miles from the caldera and I could not care less. Everyone south thru Texas and California will be fried if it goes off. Past eruptions have spared areas north of the Missouri river of giant ash fall.

I’ll head north. Maybe. Maybe I’ll just pour a tall scotch.

Yes, one must wonder why he does not just wave his hands. Perhaps he is waiting for the right moment, and he can cause the lava and ash to be sucked back into the earth.

Why would he want to do that? The states that would be destroyed are mostly red states. Their destruction would ensure his reelection in 2012.

And if the destruction happens before the 2010 census it will ensure Democratic gains in Congress..

Yellowstone National Park is a national treasure. I had the joy of working there during my college summers in 1961 and 1962. That was followed by a summer working in Grand Teton National Park in 1963. Talk about a blessed youth. Both are beautiful in their different ways. Here are a few of my shots from my visit this past August. It was so much the better, as I traveled with my son, to show him some of my favorite views and places, like the Cowboy Bar, in Jackson and the Jackson Lake Lodge, in the park.

This is my favorite picture of the trip, Hayden Valley, between Yellowstone Lake and Canyon, with the little black dots on the right being the American buffalo

This is one of the most breath taking view in the world, the 309 foot Lower Falls of the Yellowstone, in the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

A close up view of the same falls

This Western Tananger flew in an landed about 6 feet from me. I almost had a attach getting my camera ready for the shot. It was like it was looking for food. What a rare treat!

Sun setting on the Tetons and, specifically, Teewinot. What a joy.

Here's a shot of the falls on the "inside" Firehole River road. Great swimming, too.

I sure hope you have enjoyed my pictures. Visit and support the National Park system. Perhaps, next summer, Yellowstone Lake will be warmer than the usual 55 degrees, turning it into a classic hot spaw, with a view.

Loved Yellowstone in my one visit there (in the summer) We had everything from hot and sunny to snow up around the lake. I live in Colorado and understand mountain weather, so we did have winter coats with us in August. It was fun watching the tourists from warmer and lower elevations running around in their shorts cursing the weather

I would love to return to Yellowstone, but I would like to do so in the winter. I suspect the beauty is breathtaking when contrasted with the snow. If I had unlimited funds, I would retire in the valley just below Jackson, one of the most beautiful places on earth

Thanks for sharing your pictures

Mom and others,

Thanks for the nice comments. I'm with you on the move. I could do a lot of places out there, say Cody or the valley out by Wilson or even Billings, where my Grandmother was bron in 1888 and my Mother in 1917. I think that's why I love the area so much, it's in my blood.

I rember, when working at the little gas station in Moose, now gone, when the temperture fell about 40 degrees in about 30 minutes. It was amazing.

My Son and I stopped in Rapid City, right in the middle of Bike Week in near by Sturgus. We liked that area too. Here's my favorite shot from there.
