McCain Could Face 2010 Primary Challenge
AOL News - Political Machine ^ | 2009-01-03 | Matt Lewis

Posted on 01/03/2009 12:17:15 PM PST by rabscuttle385

Though not widely reported, rumors slowly began circulating last month that former GOP presidential nominee John McCain may face a primary challenge in 2010 from former Congressman J.D. Hayworth.

(Rep. Jeff Flake and Rep. John Shadegg were both likely candidates for the open seat if McCain were to win the presidency, but it appears unlikely either would challenge McCain.)

McCain, of course, would be hard to beat. He garnered close to 54 percent of the vote in Arizona's general election. More importantly, he easily won the state's primary, garnering more than 47 percent of the vote (though exit polls show Romney won the conservative vote in Arizona.)

But McCain has long been disliked by many conservatives, and it is highly likely that an effort to un-seat him would be greeted by many conservatives across the nation. A credible anti-McCain conservative candidate -- such as Hayworth -- would most likely have no difficulty in raising substantial funds.

Unfortunately for us, getting rid of RINOs in the Senate is a 6 year process.

Whatever.

The GOP will cry and say you must support him. If he loses then a Dem would pick up Arizona and that would help Obama.

McCain is long overdue for retirement..

Selecting McCain as the Republican presidential nominee was the absolute WORST choice the GOP could have possibly made in 2008.

He's an old-as-dirt Washington insider when voters wanted the opposite.

I still contend McCain so hated religious conservatives and Republicans that he subconsciously planned to lose, just to throw mud in the face of his arch enemy George W. Bush who would continue to be pummelled by the media and by historians.

If the GOP had won in 2008, the GWB/GOP legacy could have been salvaged.

McCain is petty.

He only won 47% of the vote in the GOP presidential primary in Arizona????? Sounds like he could be in danger based on that. I’d love to see him lose.

I realize they're talking about our Presidential Preference Poll. However, if the Senator runs with only one opponent in the Republican primary and only wins 47% of the vote, he loses.

I'd help make that happen...as JD is a much better representative of my values than the current office-holder.

“If the GOP had won in 2008, the GWB/GOP legacy could have been salvaged.”

The GOP brand name is below where it was when Nixon resigned, thanks in large part to people like GWB and McCain RINOs.

Let’s rebuild from the ground up and make the GOP a conservative party like it was in the 80s.

I just hope a SINGLE conservative candidate runs against him, and not a half dozen others. This is how most RINOs probably get back on the ballot election after election.

Oh, and CLOSE the primary to republicans ONLY, if it isn’t already.

Democrats don't find it an issue to beat McCain as shown of late.

If he wants any chance at all of winning he will have to run in the Democrat primary.

Considering the way he abandoned Sarah Palin to the vicious leftist media after the election he has even less credibility than when he started campaigning 2 years ago.

“(though exit polls show Romney won the conservative vote in Arizona.) “ That tells you that their are no conservatives in AZ.

That's an idea I think quite a few here at FR have that would viewed as incorrect by many Republicans. Though many don't like Romney, I believe most Republicans believed he would govern as a conservative if elected.

Romney also got a healthy conservative vote in Florida. I think there are conservatives in Arizona and many voted for Romney because they considered him to be a conservative candidate.

Not only is JD a great Arizonan, he's a fellow alum (and former football player) of North Carolina State University - Go Pack!

And I agree with you... JD got robbed in the '06 election. I bet if ACORN were investigated in Tempe, they'd find that half the ASU students who voted for Harry Mitchell actually lived in Southern California.

That really will depend upon who the next RNC Chair is. If Duncan does continue being the RNC Chair, then yes, Duncan will defend McCain as best as he can, but, as an example, if it’s Blackwell that becomes the next RNC Chair, then it will be interesting to see if Blackwell does all that he can do to defeat McCain.
