built on a rubbish dump?

The road to the dump is paved with good intentions.
No?

Some residents dismiss their neighbours’ worries. Diennal Fields, 51, said people did not know how to look after their homes: “It’s simple stuff: if there is mildew, don’t get a lawyer, get a bottle of bleach.”

There were 5 H4H houses built about a half mile from me. Nice looking houses after they were done, but they now look like hell. It's obvious that they just haven't been maintained. I can understand not having maintenance money (and why doesn't H4H screen folks to make sure they can maintain their houses?), but what does it cost to pull the weeds in your front yard?

...the roofs caved in since nobody knew about “snowload”—

And there are no inspectors in SD? Were the plans approved first?

Houses built by “Feel Good” Amateurs with cheap materials on reclaimed and donated land for people who are professional renters who have no concept of owning anything more than a TV or New Caddy - What would you expect. (That is a statement not a question !)

I wonder what kind of loans were given to the people who got Carter's Habitat for Humanity Homes.. Sub-prime?

One man pulled up his floorboards to find rubbish 5ft deep under his kitchen.

Sounds like it's not all a matter of poor maintenance.

Nothing good comes from an abode built by the untalented to house the ungrateful.

Hollywood good intentions built up on a foundation of rubbish!

Who’d ‘a thunk it?

In all likelihood, it’s the occupants of the house who are at fault. Habitat conducts a thorough background check on proposed new owners with several meetings over a period of time. Perhaps there were problems in this area. I suspect we’ll see more of this with Zero coming on board, though.

I volunteer for Habitat—not on the construction sites, but in the ReStore, and in a modest way. Still, I’ve had contact with the administrators and have been out to the job sites, so I can make these comments:

1. Yes, the houses are built to local code and do have the appropriate inspections. Locally our building inspectors are extremely strict.
2. The work may be volunteer, but much of it is done by professionals. In other words, they don’t have amateur plumbers, electricians, and roofers doing the work; if they did, it would never pass.
3. The nonprofessional volunteers do things that don’t take a lot of skill, and most of them have had a lot of practice even if they aren’t pros.
4. Building materials are all new and good grade. I don’t see any signs of any worse construction than most of the single-family houses and townhouses in the area (which isn’t saying much). The houses really are okay when they’re done.
5. The people who receive the houses have to take a course in home maintenance, and they’re given help and information about keeping the house up. Still, most of them were raised in bad conditions, never owned a house before, and don’t know how it’s supposed to work. They’re used to calling a landlord when something breaks, when the average American homeowner would get out his or her hammer and fix what’s wrong. Now they don’t have a landlord, they don’t have the know-how or sense to fix their own garbage disposal, and they don’t have enough money to call an expert.
Funny, though, you can get foreign nationals here who have also never owned a house, and they seem to manage to keep their homes sparkling clean and in good repair.

Call all the celebutards back and have them fix it. They don’t want a ‘Katrina’ on their hands do they? (At least not one they can’t blame on Bush.)

These were junky houses built on top a landfill ~ it’s a wonder they lasted 8 years.

"I've heard no complaints of his time in the service."

You've got access to his service records and fitreps???

I only ask because something tells me that if you haven't heard Jimmy screwed it up, it's only because you haven't heard the story...

Nothing Liberals build on, especially morally has a sure foundation, it’s all just rubble, wood hay and stubble. Relativism.

This is a perfect picture of their very souls and lives.

Sad.

And to think they felt ‘righteous’ when building these.
