President-elect Barack Obama has approached CNN's chief medical correspondent, Sanjay Gupta, to be the country's next surgeon general, the cable news network said Tuesday.
CNN said it has kept Gupta from reporting on health care policy and other matters involving the incoming Obama administration since learning he was under consideration for the post.
Two Democrats with knowledge of the discussions over the surgeon general spot said Gupta was under consideration but cautioned there was not yet a final decision on who would fill the post. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media on the matter.
Obama's transition office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Gupta hosts "House Call" on CNN, contributes reports to CBS News, and writes a column for Time magazine. He is a neurosurgeon and is on the faculty at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. During the Clinton administration, he was a White House fellow and special adviser to then-first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton.

absolutely.
Then CNN can hire Dr Manny off of Fox News. I think Dr Manny should be required to show his full authenticated credentials before each segment he commentates.
Hopefully Dr Gupta won’t be contacting Joycelyn Elders for any advice on the “position” or any other matters.
Oprah has quite an influence on young Barack Hussein. Maybe the Gupta appointment is just a diversion.
****Will Ronald McDonald head up the FDA?***
Has anyone else noticed this pattern? Where are Obama’s colleagues and associates? Is he too afraid to name them? Are there only more Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrns in his Rolodex?
From the list of appointees he has presented so far - they are all Clinton retreads or celebrity pundits. This idiot has no depth of experience, quality mentors or friends of long-standing and accomplishment.
He is a totally empty vessel.
LOL... Oprah was my backup, backup choice if Dr Phil was not in the room...
I’m far more concerned about the CIA appointment than this one.
Gupta is a shill for Big Pharma. It makes me wonder if the Codex Alimentarius conspiracy theory is for real.
No but Werner Klemperer is being vetted for GITMO warden.
Ryan Seacrest will be the new solicitor general
Judge Judy, Judge Mathis and Jodge Joe Brown are waiting for someone to retire from SCOTUS
T.J.Hooker will be the new FBI chief—he has more law enforcement experience than Leon Panacea does!
Lou Grant can be the press secretary, Emeril Lagasse will be the USDA honcho, and I can easily see Adrian Monk as the mental health czar!
Dr. Phil, Dr. Laura, Dr. Ruth, Dr. Kevorkian, Dr. Scholl, Dr. Demento and Dr. Seuss all turned the job down. Hawkeye Pierce and “Trapper” John Macintyre were not availalbe.
can’t deny the man credit for all that even if he is a liberal with an American Idol name
It has become politics by celebrity. Gupta is not real, this is embarrassing. Stay away from TV personalities, our national intellect is thin enough as it is.
Look at Caroline Kennedy, Gov Patterson, Hillary Clinton, Andrew Cuomo — when are the “real” people going to arrive? These lucky people are all benefiting from their family names rather than their accomplishments.
And I thought the Dems were against he power elite maintaining their power. It’s OK so long as it is a Dem getting the power.
You've nailed it. As I mentioned on an earlier thread, he has no friends, nobody remembers him from school, and he is a loner. The only resources at his fingertips are either clinton's or the MSM's. Axelrod is behind the curtain pulling the strings.
Obama is going to bring the American Presidency to a new level of unseriousness. It started off badly with the “Office of the President-Elect”, and it’s only become worse since. Obama is like a child. He belongs nowhere near the White House.
Gupta is not pro-life. Research it for yourself. And btw, I’d be careful with the insults, idiot. Lol.
