Suddenly Puritanical Shuster: Bristol & Levi 'Unwed Parents'
NewsBusters ^ | January 6, 2009 | Mark Finkelstein

Posted on 01/06/2009 6:50:42 PM PST by St. Louis Conservative

He stopped short of demanding they be branded with a scarlet 'U.' But the suddenly puritanical David Shuster insists that the proper term for Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston is "unwed parents."

Shuster rendered his verdict on this evening's 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, the MSNBC show he's been hosting since David Gregory parted for Meet The Press. Shuster teased the issue at the top of the program, then devoted a segment to it later on.

View view here.

Shuster also took aim at Levi for leaving his job as an apprentice electrician when a flap arose of his lack of a high school diploma. Note the tabloid-worthy chyron: "Levi Johnston Quits His Job Days After Bristol Palin Gives Birth!" Nice touch, that exclamation point.

Now, it is of course true that Bristol and Levi are parents and unwed. But when's the last time you heard an MSM type refer to an "unwed mother" or "unwed parents"? As we all know, the approved PC terms are "single mother" and simply "parents" or "partners."

So what's caused Shuster suddenly to become strait-laced? You don't suppose it could possibly stem from a desire to embarrass Bristol's mother, do you?

Does he mention “unmarried parents” Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie? Or “unmarried parents” (bigamy doesn’t count in the U.S.) Barack Obama and Ann Dunham? Of course not.

MSLSD has ZERO credibility. I can’t wait for that piece of crap network to go off the air and we can all see these so-called news people on street corners with signs saying “Will be unbiased for food”

Nope. As I recall, he said they couldn’t until it was legal for all their gay friends to get married. (Can’t blame him ... any excuse is a good excuse not to marry a psycho.)

The media’s double standard is outrageous, but conservatives should be more concerned about the fact that it is really is deplorable that Sarah Palin’s daughter and the father of her child have not married yet. I am a big Palin fan and I laud the fact that her daughter didn’t panic and have an abortion. People, especially teenagers, make mistakes. But they should have married as soon as Bristol realized she was pregnant and it is inexplicable that they didn’t marry before the baby was born. Marriage is important. The longer this couple waits to marry, and the more hoopla that accompanies the ceremony, the stronger the message is that whether to get married is an entirely subjective decision. (Again, I am a big Sarah Palin fan.)

She’s not a “single mom,” and he’s not a “single dad”?

Why doesn’t Shuster just call them “fornicators”?

There maybe practicle reasons that they are not married yet. Possibly insurance coverage for mother and baby.

I think that dealing with one crisis at a time is good idea. Marriage is a big step, and should be undertaken "soberly, advisedly," etc., as the Book of Common Prayer put it. And who says marriage isn't "optional" when the woman is pregnant? In many cases, marriage to the father is the worst thing a woman could do to her child and to herself.

Fornicating is a bad decision. Not getting an abortion is an honorable, right decision. Getting married is a completely separate decision.

That’s an excellent point. There’s a reason insurance companies love those exemptions for preexisting conditions.

That's preposterous. Sarah Palin, who had the drive to get to the Governor's Office, would not let a few thousand dollars stand in the way of anything important, least of all Bristol's prospective marriage to the father of her child.

Hey, psychotic girls can be fun. Just never take her to your place (which Brad has already violated), and never give her your phone number or your real email address. :)

“There’s a reason insurance companies love those exemptions for preexisting conditions.”

And a reason us patients hate them. I changed jobs a couple years ago and it was SIX MONTHS before my new insurance company would cover any treatment related to my wife’s blood pressure.

I disagree strongly. If a girl is pregnant and she or the guy refuses to get married, then the issue of marriage is obviously moot. But when a couple has a child AND announces plans to marry, they should do it quickly and without hoopla. Children need both parents and getting married is the way to give the child the best possible upbringing. (”Hard cases make bad law” and horror stories about unstable people pressured to marry are not relevant here, as this couple is still, well, a couple and have said they plan to marry.)

My own insurance company got me real good. I switched from their PPP to their HMO plan. In the last 3 days before the PPP plan expired and the HMO plan started, I had a dentist appointment. Big mistake. Dental X-rays revealed a very small tumor in my cheek. The HMO refused coverage, claiming it was -- yes indeed, by a mere 3 days -- a previously diagnosed preexisting condition.

Well, the good news was the tumor was benign. The bad news was I wound up paying for the surgery out of pocket. And the lesson learned is: If in a matter of days or weeks your insurance is switching over from one plan to another, hold off on any routine/well-care doctor and dentist appointments so you don't get screwed.

3/4 of Hollywood and music industry couples are “unwed parents.” Don’t hear/see anyone talking or writing about that little fact.

That Bristol Palin has not yet married the father of her child is fact; that that is a deplorable situation is, obviously, opinion. That is what Free Republic is for: voicing opinions informed by facts.

" I have to wonder about all these in-vitro kids, though."

Three of the kids are adopted from third world countries (Cambodia, Ethiopia, Vietnam) and the other three, I think, were naturally conceived.
