Last night I posted an item on David Shuster's hypocrisy in branding Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston "unwed parents," pointing out that the MSM would never normally use such an un-PC term, preferring to speak reverentially of "single mothers." This morning, Ann Coulter appeared on Today to discuss her new book, Guilty, and by coincidence, an important focus of Ann's remarks was . . . the liberal media's "exaltation of single-motherhood."
I'll leave it to my fellow NewsBusters to recount the entire story of Ann's Today appearance, including the way NBC apparently scurried to have her on this morning's show after Drudge ran a story asserting that the network had imposed a lifetime ban on the conservative firebrand. For present purposes, let's focus here on the similar themes struck here and by Ann on the subject of single-motherhood.

During Today appearance, Coulter castigates MSM glorification of single-motherhood. Ping to Today show list.
Did they really identify Ann Coulter as “Conservative Queen” onscreen? Incredible!
Yup. See image posted above.
Well, she IS the queen of the conservatives. And that’s a GOOD thing!
NBC probably thinks it’s a bad thing, or they’d have come up with a different caption.
NBC - Nincompoops, Buttheads & Clowns
I think she gave him a pretty good whipping in the video. She has learned how to combat their tactic of interrupting by saying, “now this is going to take more than two or three sentences”. Brilliant and very effective.
Single mothers are just SO brave.
I wish they’d be a little more brave in telling the men who inpregnate them for kicks to BACK OFF.
Baby-mama indeed.
Did anyone scream off with her head?
Ok, we have to be careful here...
I fully recognize that the breakdown of the nuclear family has taken a great toll on our society. And I think too many young people (and some not so young) unlike Bristol Palin are too cavalier about pregnancy and unwed parenthood.
AND we must not attack a woman simply for being a single mom. I didn’t marry my oldest daughter’s father right away (married him when she was 1, but split up just months later when I realized what a mistake it was).
I don’t ususally toot my own horn, but it wasn’t easy to leave an unhealthy relationship. Yes, I never should have been in that relationship to begin with and I definitely should not have had sex with him — but there was an alternative that I NEVER considered but too many young women (more than 1,000,000 in the US alone each year) feel they have no choice to do, often bec they don’t feel the support necessary to have their baby. (financial and emotional)
So while promoting the family, let’s not condemn single parenthood outright and create an environment that perhaps steers young women toward a tragic choice.
Excellent documentation!
ANN - FYI - hubby called NBC twice. The first person was a pseudo male receptionist who said your cancellation was due to their expanded war coverage. On the second call, a few hours later, there was a young lady answering the phone and he asked her why you weren't on the Today show. She said,"They were responding to the fact that their viewers didn't want Ann Coulter on the show" and that the "viewers thought she was too controversial." He asked her if you would be on in the future...say tomorrow (Wednesday). She said initially that she "didn't know," so hubby asked her to check. She took time away from the call to "go find out" and then came back and told him you were "not on the schedule." Hubby left messages on their "Viewer Comment Line" each time, expressing his anger over this decision and the second time even telling Matt to "man up!"
Ann, if you need us to verify this in any way, please FReepmail me. We are here for you! Hubby put the second call with the girl on speaker phone, so I heard it too.
She's not attacking a person, just the medias love of the idea of single motherhood.
If NBC's viewers were so influential, she wouldn't have been on today!
EVIDENTLY their Viewers are more Conservative than they care to admit!
WERE THEY LYING THEN, OR THEY ARE LYING NOW ? ;-)
don’t forget those who get pregnant on purpose in order to get the government check.
The word attack makes your plea right, a no-brainer. However, liberal America was dead wrong to render even mild disapproval as a hate crime. A strong culture "discriminates."
Liberal elites hate it when Coulter puts a mirror up to them and showcases their bias...
“I’m sorry, but children deserve a father and we DO need to make sex before marriage and having a child out of wedlock a shameful thing.”
Every child deserves a father who cares about them — that’s why I went out and found a good man to be a good father to my daughter — but again, let’s be careful.
There should be more than a modicum of shame, but I don’t think that should be the prevailing sentiment. I think what we should stress is that it is not at all the ideal situation for all those involved — esp’ly the child — and we should do what we can to prevent unwed parenthood while also working for the best outcomes when it does occur.
Yes it is a fine distinction — that the media seems to love that somehow women don’t *need* men to raise children. Yes, this should not be thought of as “just another lifestyle choice.” (Is that the quote from Quayle?)
It seems selfish and unfair to the child when women purposely get pregnant when single, intending to raise the child on their own, but the desire for motherhood can be strong. And there have been many “success” stories, so sometimes it’s hard to point out that it still isn’t the best way to go.
But, like Murphy Brown, some women don’t *intend* single parenthood, and we don’t want to turn them toward abortion, so I’m saying I think we need to be careful how we get our point across.
One word.
Adoption. We need to push THAT option and no other for single mothers,
It’s not about single mothers. It’s about fatherless children.
Fatherless children suffer for a lifetime.
Western civilization cannot endure without the building blocks of intact families.
>>But, like Murphy Brown, some women dont *intend* single parenthood, and we dont want to turn them toward abortion, so Im saying I think we need to be careful how we get our point across.<<
THE most unselfish act of a woman is to give her child to a couple who will raise her in an intact family. Not taking the abortion route is correct.
Adoption is noble and unselfish. As soon as Conservatives get off the kick of “single motherhood is right” because “abortion is wrong” and start pushing the correct option of giving the child to an intact, loving family, things will be different.

I agree that adoption is more often than not the best option. I think it is heartbreaking that there is such a bias against it.
I don’t understand this bias — I mean, doesn’t *everyone* know someone who was adopted or who is aching to adopt a child?
But I guess for every 1,000,000 of these positive stories we hear, there’s that one bad one where the adoptive parents weren’t the best — or even for some reason, I think those stories about birth parents being a bit off — these rare stories for some reason have a resonance that perpetuates a negative attitude toward adoption.
We must rid society of the notion that you are giving your child “away” and instead that you are giving your child “more.” (And with “open” adoptions you still have a chance to remain in your child’s life — altho this can be hard when years pass, and the birth mother is in a better position, and feels that if they had just stuck it out and got thru that tough time...)
That being said — I don’t think it should be presented as the only option. It still smacks of implying that single motherhood is inherently bad.
There are many women who give the nuclear family a try, but realize it is untenable with their child’s father, (myself), or find themselves a single parent for other reasons. Sometimes it’s the best we can do.
>>It still smacks of implying that single motherhood is inherently bad. <<
It is inherently lacking. It’s lacking 50% and should be discouraged, strongly. If one cannot attain a viable marriage with a man, then the best thing for any child is to be with a loving, intact family. I was there.
We have boys and girls growing up without fathers. Boys become feminized or join gangs to belong. Girls instinctually look to a male for approval. Without a father, they look to other men at younger and younger ages.
We need to take the approach that if we can’t see a man as a husband, DO NOT have sex with him. Mistakes happen and the only way to guarantee that one will not have a child with a man that is not capable of marriage is to refrain.
Adoption is not talked about because the MSM glorifies single motherhood. It’s not the answer.

Interesting interview with Ann Coulter. I've never seen Matt Lauer before since I don't have a TV. What a (deleted adjective) (deleted noun) he is! Coulter is entirely right about single motherhood. Of course, some women have to leave abusive husbands or become widows. But saving sex until marriage will change society (and personal lives) for the better.
