The Buzz { Tax the Rich }

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's deficit-closing plan to temporarily raise sales taxes by 1.5 cents on the dollar has drawn predictable howls of protest from the right. Now the left has weighed in with equal disgust. Peace and Freedom Party state Chairman Kevin Akin calls the plan a "savage attack on working people." Instead, Akin says, raise income taxes on "the richest 1 percent" and eliminate the sales tax.

The rich are in an economic meltdown, too. That's part of the reason that State tax revenue has fallen as much as it has.

There is no doubt that the increase of sales tax is a regressive tax. Increased car registration is a regressive tax. They are also hard to avoid..since you must have food, clothing and a car (even in CA).
Raising taxes on the rich will just increase tax avoidance by the rich(who won’t have the same high incomes this year). More rich people will move out of CA for income tax free states.
There just is no good answer, except to cut govt spending.
If they do that..then it is only fair to stop the spending on the non-citizens first. Throw the illegals out of the state.

If he really wants to “soak the rich,” enact a possession tax.

Stop spending. What a novel idea. One that would work yet one that absolutely no one has the will to do. Arnold has been a huge dissapointment. He ran on cutting spending and after losing the first battle, gave up and is now part of the problem.

And California is just an advanced case of where the rest of the country is headed. A corrupt system with entrenched interests and a system biased toward ratcheting up spending that makes any real cuts almost impossible. It doesn’t bode well for the future.

The rich won’t pay the increase in taxes. They will simply raise the cost to the buyer. The idea of raising taxes like this will always go back to the consumer but they try to hide that fact. I agree, cut spending on everything, including schools. Cut the handouts to illegals, as you stated.

The definition of “rich” changes (quickly) among blood sucking politicians. Atlas needs to shrug and tea needs to be spilled.

Why doesn’t government ever get smaller? That seems like such an obvious solution for at least the next year or two.

This will ensure that more people will move from California to neighboring Nevada, which has no state income tax.

There's lots of vacant real estate waiting to receive the incoming refugees. My state income tax in Idaho is lower than it was in California, but certainly not zero. Wyoming, Nevada and Florida will likely see an influx of income tax refugees.

“There just is no good answer, except to cut govt spending.”

I think a better answer than raising the CA sales tax from 6.5% to 8% would be to drop it to 5% — but extend it to all goods and services, including groceries, medicine, rent, etc.

Doesn’t it seem odd to anybody that CA sales tax exempts all the things that RESIDENTS must spend money on ? If the “necessities” aren’t being taxed, then that seems like an attempt to make the rich (and tourists) pay for everything. It just doesn’t seem honest, and CA will find out what happens when you try — the rich leave and the tourists stay away.
