Despite deep chill, global warming is still a peril: scientists

PARIS (AFP) – A cold front is sweeping across Europe after gripping swathes of North America last month, but the deep freeze does not mean the threat of global warming has abated, caution scientists.

"The major trend is unmistakably one of warming," Michel Jarraud, secretary general of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), told AFP.

"If we look at the trajectory over the last 160 years, it overlays a large natural variability, and that's what causes confusion."

The cooler weather that was a hallmark of 2008 can be explained partly by La Nina, a reversal of the phenomenon by which warm waters build up on the surface of the Pacific, said Jarraud.

"The problem is that people are confusing weather with climate," Susan Solomon, a top scientist on the UN's Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC), said in a recent interview.

"Weather is important locally, and from year to year. But what you really have to look at when you are interested in climate is the larger scale -- the whole world -- and the longer term," she said.

Even if 2008 was on balance chillier than 2007, it still ranks as the 10th warmest year on record, she pointed out.

And over the long haul, average global surface temperatures have climbed significantly -- between 0.75 and 1.0 degrees Celsius (1.35 and 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit) -- since 1850, when accurate weather statistics were first recorded.

If it's too hot, it's because of global warming.

If it's too cold, it's because of global warming.

If it rains too much, it's because of global warming.

If there's a drought, it's because of global warming.

What a racket. The global warming 'gurus' are trying to get people all stirred up so they can get laws passed requiring payment of carbon credits. Then take the money to do 'research'.

“Cold snaps are routinely seized upon by a dwindling rearguard of climate skeptics as “proof” that climate change is exaggerated or an outright fabrication, Jouzel said.”

From the linked article: "... the overall warming trend could be slowed over the next decade by ..."

The global-warming alarmists are attempting to buy themselves another decade.

"The problem is that people are confusing weather with climate," Susan Solomon, a top scientist on the UN's Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC),

Susan, what people are you talking about? Are you talking about me, Johnny Suntrade?

I certainly don't confuse weather with climate, after all I did pass the seventh grade.

In fact Susan I don't deny that over some period of time, which can be chosen by various select bodies, that the climate is not warming.

But I do seriously question, for a number of technical reasons which might be over your head, including the Boltzman effect on the atmosphere, and the pK of CO2 in the planet's waters, and the relative infrared signature of water vapor versus CO2, that man's combustion (oxidation) of reduced sequestered carbon has much of anything to do with the climatic warming over the period which you so judiciously have selected.

You are free to relay this to your superiors.

> "the rate of climate change" that should worry us.

And she's right... where I live, there was an abrupt and rather precipitous drop in temperatures over the last few months. What's more, the local meteorologists are predicting an equally quick and dramatic rise in temperatures over the next few months.

Gee… I wonder why the global warmers decided to start their comparisons in about 1850? Maybe, it’s as they state: “since 1850, when accurate weather statistics were first recorded.”

But… Perhaps it’s because the “little ice age” ran until about 1850!

Comparing current temperatures to those from the “little ice age” that ran from 1100 to 1850 would no doubt make the current temperatures appear that much warmer.

When the fact disprove global warming religion, they have to resort to misleading or lying to us.

Interesting discussion on Victoria Taft show (Portland) last night. It was pointed out that after the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990’s, many weather sites in Russia no longer reported. The remainder may be located in warmer areas thus skewing the overall temperature record if not corrected. Don’t know if that’s the case, but makes one wonder.

Three comments in response to this educated idiot.

No one disputes warming; only the anthropogenic contribution is subject to debate (which is not allowed).

The only static climate (as well as weather) might be found on dead planets.

Define "record!" It is asinine to point out that climate is not synonimous to weather, and then throw out a minuscule tiny, infinitesimal period of time as the "record," and base sky-is-falling scenarious on that.

Allow the opinion of long established true scientists to be considered, and the ridicule factor grows exponentially against these wannabe self-important doofuses.

A major problem: There is NO La Nina at this time, and there hasn’t been since last winter. The ENSO is neutral. NO La Nina, and NO El Nino.
